3 INTRODUCTION The University of South Australia is pleased to announce the ongoing development of the Leadership Program in Ongoing evaluation and research into best practice models across the sector has driven the following adaptions to the 2015 version of the program: The ASPIRE Program will be absorbed by a new student recognition award program which will be launched in The UNITE Program will continue with very similar content, but with sessions being moved from mostly weeknights to full week-days and some week-ends. The UNITE Live-In Camp will change focus from being workshop and training focused to an enterprise focused planning and team-building event. UNITE participants will have the option to bring their own Enterprise activity ideas and form groups to work on their proposal. Depending on the proposal, groups may choose to align with Venture Catalyst, Community Connect, ENACTUS or TEDx UniSA programs. The LEAD Program will continue with a sharper focus on participants taking an active leadership role within the programs listed above. LEAD participants will receive additional training and support in mentoring, coaching, project management and facilitation. UNITE Program Guide 2016 P a g e 3 (08)

4 UNITE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the UNITE Program students should be able to display and articulate the following graduate competencies and behaviours: SELF AWARENESS Develop an understanding of their personal values, beliefs, strengths and weaknesses; COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK Use their strengths to aid communication and collaboration in a team and personal situations; LEADERSHIP CONCEPTS Demonstrate an understanding of leadership concepts vs traditional management; EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Manage their emotions and behaviours in challenging situations; RESILIENCE & DURABILITY Display resilience and the ability to deal with ambiguity, staying in control during challenging times; LIFELONG LEARNING Understand and participate in reflective practice for lifelong learning; AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP Understand the importance of being authentic, trustworthy and self aware. 5 UNITE PROGRAM UNITE will be celebrating its 5 th year in 2016 and to mark this milestone we will be increasing the maximum number of participants to 50 students. Participants must be enrolled UniSA students for the full duration of the program, which will end by December Objectives At the conclusion of UNITE, students will have developed the following skills and experience: SELF AWARENESS: Develop an understanding of their personal values, beliefs, strengths and weaknesses; COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK: Use their strengths to aid communication and collaboration in a team and personal situations; LEADERSHIP CONCEPTS: Demonstrate an understanding of leadership concepts vs traditional management; EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: Manage their emotions and behaviours in challenging situations; RESILIENCE & DURABILITY: Display resilience and the ability to deal with ambiguity, staying in control during challenging times; LIFELONG LEARNING: Understand and participate in reflective practice for lifelong learning; AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP: Understand the importance of being authentic, trustworthy and self-aware. Applications Applications close at 9:00am on Monday 2 nd November Participants Up to 50 students will be offered a position in the 2016 program. All participants will be required to attend the Introductory Session in early December Requirements To complete the program and receive the UNITE Award, participants must: Attend all core sessions listed Bring an idea for an Enterprise activity to the Live-In Camp Actively participate in an Enterprise activity Participate in the production of an Annual Report and poster presentation for the Enterprise activity Participate in online reflection activities Value This program is offered to UniSA students at no cost, but it is important for participants to note that the accepted value of this program in the open market would be well in excess of $5000 per student. It is expected that student recognise the opportunity that is being offered and fully commit to participation in all activities and overall completion of the program. Withdrawal from the program at any point after the Live-In Camp (except in extremely extenuating circumstances) will be viewed as an extremely disappointing outcome and students may be held financially responsible for their participation to the point of withdrawal. 6 CORE COMPONENTS The following sessions are considered Core to the program and participants must attend all sessions to be eligible for completion. Learn to make conscious decisions to challenge long held beliefs or habits and develop an assertive approach to your personal and working relationships. (DISC and VIA Strengths Profiling Tools used) Growth Mindset and Goals Discover your personal values and goals while reflecting on your existing leadership journey. Discover how previous experiences have shaped your personality and behaviours and develop strategies on utilising to Growth Mindset. (Realise2 Profiling Tool used). Creativity, Business Skills & Etiquette Learn about the expectations, protocols and etiquette of an office environment. Learn how to write a formal , plan, organise, conduct and record meetings and how to use Microsoft Office Applications to aid time management and organisation. In the afternoon we will look at strategies to enhance your creative side. Learn from some great creative minds about the process and start to develop plans for your Enterprise activity. Emotional and Cultural Intelligence Understand how your emotions and actions can influence yourself and others and develop strategies to manage relationships and your own behaviours. Learn about cultural norms and customs; develop strategies to effectively understand and acknowledge cultural differences. Teamwork and Communication Explore the stages of team development and discover your preferred team roles and strategies for effective team organisation and communication. Develop strategies to allocate tasks amongst team members and work to individual strengths. (Belbin Team Roles Profiling Tool used). Pitch your Idea Develop skills to confidently network with others, negotiate and share your ideas. Learn how to plan and deliver convincing presentations. Form a team and deliver a pitch for seed funding. This is a Live-In Camp where participants will form enterprise groups will have the opportunity to plan and network during the evening. Build your Team Explore positive and negative team behaviours and strategies for maintaining focus, motivation and communication. Map out your concept with your team, start developing your plan and set goals and behavioural norms for the team. Mentors and coaches will be invited to provide support and advice throughout the session. Enterprise teams may work through the evening. Dinner will be held from 7pm 9pm. The Next Step Mentors will be invited to work with the team and start planning their projects. Enterprise teams will map out their project implementation and agree on upcoming meeting times and actions.

7 ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS These components will be offered as add-ons to the core components. It is highly recommended that all participants attend all of these sessions. Spend time with your project group developing your project management plan. This will be the last chance for participants to change groups. Managing Discomfort Learn to manage uncomfortable situations and provide honest feedback. Understand the importance of experiencing ambiguity and discomfort in order to develop resilience. Completion Ceremony Present an annual report outlining the aims, strategies and outcomes of your Enterprise activity over the year. This can be presented as a poster presentation with a brief (5 min) explanation and Q&A. Alumni Networking Event Meet program alumni and network with invited guest speakers as an ongoing opportunity to develop your leadership and enterprise skills and career opportunities. ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES These opportunities will be offered throughout the program and participants will be expected to maintain regular participation in these activities. Guest hosts will be invited to share ideas, strategies and provide expert advice. INSPIRE Seminars Enterprise teams come together to work on their project with support from mentors and coaches. Guest speaker will be invited to share ideas and strategies and provide expert advice. Group coaching with facilitators will take place following the seminar to further debrief the key topics and themes raised in the seminar. Online Reflection and Discussion Following each workshop, participants will be required to engage in online discussion and reflection exercises to aid their understanding and learning. P a g e 7

8 ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY Develop an Enterprise idea Present your Enterprise idea Network your Enterprise idea Form an Enterprise team Advance your idea Work with someone else's idea Shape your Enterprise activity During the Live-In Camp session, participants will have the opportunity to present an idea for an Enterprise activity to the rest of the group. Students will need to provide a brief of their idea before the camp and will be allocated 5 minutes to present their pitch. When all participants have presented their idea for an Enterprise activity, trainers will facilitate a networking session where students have the opportunity to speak with others and negotiate to form Enterprise teams. Some participants will get to work on their Enterprise idea; others may merge their idea with someone else s, while the rest may need to abandon their idea completely. There will be ongoing opportunities throughout the remainder of the Live-In Camp for Enterprise teams to shape and plan their Enterprise activity. Participants may choose to change teams but must finalise their team by the Project Management session. Depending on the nature of the Enterprise ideas, there are several programs that students can align their activity with: Venture Catalyst ENACTUS Community Connect TEDx UniSA Idea for a startup, which Venture Catalyst defines as a product, service, or process that is both innovative and scalable. The business proposed must benefit South Australia s economic development. Enactus is a community of student, academic and business leaders commited to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better and more sustainable world. Project that is external to UniSA with a community wich can be local or global partner Identify the issues that you feel passionate about and help to turn your ideas into professional, engaging and impactful projects and events. Project which is held at UniSA in cooperation with community partners TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." It supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community. Plan and deliver a TEDx UniSA event

9 Enterprise ideas may not necessarily fit in with the listed programs and other activities may still be considered. But final approval for Enterprise activities will need to be sought from the UniSA Leadership and Volunteering team. Enterprise teams may also see the need to recruit additional students to their activity and while these volunteers will not be an official part of the UNITE program, they will receive recognition for their participation through other UniSA programs. SELECTION GUIDELINES (ALL PROGRAMS) To qualify to apply for the Leadership Program, you will either: have demonstrated strong leadership potential and the willingness to take responsibility believe that you have this potential to be a leader and show a willingness to take responsibility Consistently Positive You will also have demonstrated a consistently positive approach to the University and your learning, this means: Reliability Good attendance and punctuality Good conduct Consistently positive and co-operative Respect Positively acknowledging students, staff members and external clients Organisation Arrive on time for each workshop well prepared and expectations met during the time frame Ambition/Aspiration Able to demonstrate a desire to be involved in extra-curricular activities and University events Commitment In addition to the above, you will be committed to: Standards Attend all of the full day workshops as stated in the UNITE Program Guide Exhibit dedication and enthusiasm to project teams Connect with online activities and discussions During the Leadership Program you will always: Uphold the University s Code of Conduct and broader expectations Carry out the duties required of you Actively support and promote Leadership goals Convey a professional attitude Maintain good attendance and be on time for workshops Act as a positive ambassador for UniSA and the Leadership Program To apply, please download the Application Form from P a g e 9

10 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PERFECT PITCH WORKSHOPS Perfect Pitch is a series of workshops offered throughout the year on a range of topics that will assist students to develop their professional skills. Any student can apply for as many or few workshops as they desire, however please note that places are usually limited. Students can keep up to date with upcoming workshops by joining the Perfect Pitch group on the USASA Clubs page ( Workshops will be posted through this page and students can register and pay for those where a small fee is charged. COMPLETION CEREMONY The final part of the program will involve participants, staff, mentors and family/friends being invited to a Presentation Night, where participants will be publically acknowledged for their achievements. It is anticipated that this event forms a part of a larger event celebrating achievements of a wide range of students across the University for various student experience and extra-curricular achievements. 11 HOW TO APPLY Students wishing to apply for the UNITE or LEAD programs will need to complete the application form available at this address. Applications for UNITE and LEAD will close on Monday 2 nd November 2015 and applicants will be contacted shortly afterwards with the outcome of their application. Interviews will be conducted during November and December The application forms will remain accessible throughout 2016 and students may apply for the 2017 intake at any time after the 2016 closing date. LEAD PROGRAM Students who complete the requirements of the UNITE program will be invited to apply for the LEAD program.
