1 Trafford Alternative Education Provision Job Description Post title Salary grade Hours Location Accountability Teaching Assistant Band 1 Point (points 6-10) based on a hour week, Term time only Plus 5 additional days (39 working weeks). Full time Trafford High School / Trafford Medical Education Service Trafford Alternative Education Executive Head teacher and Management Committee The post holder reports to the Executive Head teacher of Trafford Alternative Education Provision. The main contacts of the post are PRU staff, pupils and parents / carers Head teachers, Principals and other mainstream schools/academies, the PRU Management Committee, senior officers within Trafford Council, representatives of other services and agencies and other partners. Main Purpose of the Post The post holder will be responsible for: To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake work/ care/support programmes, to enable access to learning for pupils and to assist the teacher in the management of pupil behaviour and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area. May be required to supervise groups of pupils undertaking activities in non-teaching situations. To provide support for pupils, the teacher and the school in order to raise standards of achievement for all pupils, to encourage pupils to become independent learners, to ensure their safety and welfare and support the inclusion of pupils in all aspects of school life.

2 Main duties and Responsibilities To work with the Executive Head teacher in developing a strategic direction for the school and providing professional leadership, ensuring The Trafford Medical Education and The Trafford High School Service continued success and further improvement. Support for Students To work with individual pupils and group, under the direction of the class teacher introducing tasks, monitoring children s work and using a range of strategies to support their learning. To help pupils to access the full curriculum, at the same time promoting independent learning. To observe pupils' performance, and using the systems in place in the school/class, provide the teacher with feedback on pupil progress and help to maintain individual and group records. To contribute to the planning and evaluation of learning activities for individuals and groups, liaising with and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues. To help prepare and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment for learning. To provide care with regard to the health and medical needs of pupils. To draw on specialist skills and knowledge to respond effectively to pupils with special educational needs. Support for Teachers To support the quality assurance and development of teaching and learning within the Trafford Alternative Education Provision. Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the display of pupils work.

3 Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals. Assist with the planning of learning activities. Monitor pupils responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed. Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupil s achievement, progress, problems etc. Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers. Administer routine tests and assessment, and undertake routine marking of pupils work. Provide clerical/admin support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, administer coursework, etc. Support for the curriculum Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses. Undertake programmes linked to local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, KS3/KS4, and recording achievement and progress and feeding back to the teacher. Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils competence and independence in its use. Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use. Admissions and Reintegration To support the admission and integration of pupils into Trafford Alternative Education Provision including dually registered or permanently excluded pupils and to lead on their return or reintegration into mainstream school. To provide on-site intervention support within agreed systems of supervision and take responsibility for assessing pupil needs and developing and implementing agreed work programs to support their reintegration/ return into mainstream schools and monitoring of progress.

4 Maintaining Professional Competencies: 1. To operate within agreed legal, ethical and professional boundaries when working with children and those involved with them. 2. Ensure own professional competence remains sufficient to provide effective support by seeking support for your practice and development. 3. To attend training and professional development sessions. Support for the Centre: 1. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person. 2. Be aware of, and support differences, ensuring all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop. 3. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the Centre. 4. Appreciate and support the role of other professionals. 5. Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required. 6. Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required. Training and Development: To identify training and development needs with your manager, taking an active part in your Personal Development and Review Plan. To access development opportunities as they arise and share learning with others and where appropriate, actively encourage a learning environment and development within others. Multi-agency Working: Trafford for Children and Young People. This requires multi-agency working with partner organisations in order to deliver a more integrated service. As a result of this the nature of individual jobs may change. Existing duties may be lost and other duties gained without changing the level of responsibility entailed. Post-holders will be consulted at the appropriate time should changes to an individuals post be necessary. Health and Safety: To operate safely within the workplace with regard to the Council s health and safety policies, procedures and safe working practices. To be responsible for your own Health and Safety and that of other employees. Policy: To work at all times within the established policies and practices of the Council, within the framework established by the Council Constitution and associated guidance. Trafford Alternate Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This job description is current at the date shown, but in consultation with you, maybe changes to reflect or anticipate changes in the job commensurate with the grade and job title, it may also be subject to amendment by government legislation. Where the post holder is disabled, every effort will be made to supply all necessary aids, adaptations or equipment to allow them to carry out all duties of the job. If however, a certain task proves to be unachievable, job redesign will be given full consideration.

6 Trafford Alternative Education Provision Person Specification Teaching Assistant Key: A = Application Form; L = Letter of Application; I = Interview Essential Desirable Identified Qualifications The Teaching Assistant should have: good basic education to GCSE level in literacy and numeracy, or the equivalent OR Two years minimum satisfactory experience as a TA, with evidence of INSET undertaken Experience The Teaching Assistant should have experience of: Working with young children, perhaps as a parent or voluntary worker (e.g. as a Brownie or Cub leader). In addition, the Teaching Assistant might have experience of: Level 3 Diploma in Childcare in Education (formerly known as NNEB Diploma in Nursery Nursing)OR NVQ level 4, Childcare in Education, City and Guilds Advanced Certificate in Learning Support In addition, the Teaching Assistant might have experience of being a paid worker in play schemes, crèches, midday supervision, A A; L; I

Knowledge and Understanding Skills The Teaching Assistant should have knowledge and understanding of: the needs of young children; child development and the ways in which children learn; the roles played by various adults in a child s education; behaviour management strategies; equal opportunities safeguarding The TA will be able to: work with an individual or a group; reinforce teaching points during teacher input; clear up misunderstandings and sort out misconceptions; teach new concepts as agreed with the class teacher; A; L; I model acceptable behaviour; provide strategies for spelling, reading,

8 number skills; extend children s thinking skills; assess children s understanding of text and reading skills; assess children s understanding of maths concepts; discuss with children their understanding of learning objectives; suggest ways of developing learning; encourage good social skills; update assessments and Individual Education Programmes; liaise with the SENCO and outside agencies; take an active involvement in medium-term planning.
