ASSURANCE OF LEARNING: The College of Informatics has established learning outcomes for all its majors. This course, BIS-3xx, Introduction to Groupware, is designed to support the objectives that all Business Informatics majors graduate with a demonstrated ability to: Use strong analytical skills and technological expertise in developing business information systems Apply theoretical information systems concepts in real world settings Evaluate and adopt new technology CATALOG DESCRIPTION (including course pre-requisites): Groups and teams are used in today s business environment to implement and accomplish most if not all business activities. The business environment uses groupware tools and techniques to organize and accomplish these activities. This course is designed to introduce students to those tools and techniques and how they can be automated. PREREQ: sophomore standing or permission of instructor. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Most businesses use teams and groups to accomplish their business activities. Regardless of your business industry or intended career path, team work (committees, project teams, quality assurance, requirement definition, task forces, performance evaluation, etc.) have become a basic work unit. The category of information system software developed to help team members of work together in a collaborative environment is called groupware. The use of teams has both advantages (termed process gains) and disadvantages (termed process losses). The purpose of groupware is to maximize the benefits of people working together while minimizing the problems. This class introduces the student to some of the basic underpinnings of team process losses and process gains and demonstrates how to use a groupware product to best support groups. PREREQUISITES: Students should be of sophomore standing (30 credits) prior to taking this class. Students are expected to have a basic familiarity with computer productivity software such as MS Office or Google Docs and with NKU s student and Blackboard platforms. 2 COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course, BIS-3xx, Introduction to Groupware, is designed to meet the following student learning objectives: Students will be introduced to and show a basic competence in the underlying concepts of groupware and its successful use; Students will gain hands-on experience and usage of, at least one, groupware product; Have students demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence in applying the groupware technology through development and usage. COURSE MATERIALS: Required Texts: Microsoft SharePoint: Step by Step Londer and Coventry Microsoft Press, 2014 ISBN COMMITMENT: By registering for this course, it is expected that you allocate a sufficient block of study time necessary to complete all readings, and any assignments or semester project. It is each student's responsibility to complete assignments on time. Every effort is made to have resources available and provide assistance, should you need it. ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes, and to be prepared to discuss any homework or assigned reading material. Students are responsible for catching up on material missed due to absence and/or lateness. This includes any schedule or assignment changes. While the basic lectures are drawn from the book, there is a significant amount of information generated during the class presentations and corresponding discussions. Missing several classes and/or being chronically late will significantly affect your understanding of the material, and historically, has caused lower grades. Please note that any bonus assignments, homework help, and test and exam hints are generally given out in class. If you are not here for that class, you cannot obtain those points. NKU requires that attendance will be monitored by the Instructor. Students may be administratively dropped during the first week for non-attendance. Students who miss class and wish to remain registered in class should notify their instructor. Attendance on exam days is mandatory. Clear your schedule now. If you cannot attend the tests and dedicate the time necessary for this class, then it is best to drop the course and enroll when you have time available. Make-up exams, without prior arrangement, are unfair to other students. COMMUNICATION The Blackboard Learning System will be used as the primary communication vehicle for disseminating all announcements, schedules, assignment handouts, lecture notes, etc. It is the student s responsibility to check the class Blackboard web page on the campus Web site on a daily basis to keep abreast of any changes or critical information. s sent to the student s NKU official address are considered official notification. 3 GRADING INFORMATION: Your instructor is responsible for the grading of all quizzes, exams, paper, and projects and the assessment and assignment of final grades. The course grade is determined by a mix of homework, exams, and projects to demonstrate competency in the subject matter. Your semester final grade will be made up of the following measurements and corresponding point allocations: 2 Exams (may have take-home portions) = xxx pts Problem Sets, Quizzes, and Homework = xxx pts Class Participation = xxx pts Groupware Project = xxx pts Total Points Possible = xxxx pts Bonus Assignments - Optional bonus assignments may be made available. Exams are designed to test the student s comprehension of material covered for each test. This material includes, but is not limited to, concepts and topics from homework assignments, previous tests, readings, class discussions, and lectures. There may be both in-class and take home portions of a test. The in-class tests may include multiple-choice, true-false, fill-in-the blank, and short answer. Tests are designed to take approximately 1 hour. Students will be given the entire class period to complete the test. The Groupware Project requires the student to design and build a working groupware site. Students will produce/present a final project report integrating the project with the groupware concepts; Students will create a separate Appendix providing a detailed synthesis of the project with the groupware concepts. The project may come from a predesigned or pre-existing idea. Often students may wish to substitute their own project idea and build their own groupware site. Each semester is different; Students must seek permission to substitute their own project prior to assuming this can be done. In order for a student to make up an exam the instructor must be informed either on or before the day of the exam if the student is unable to attend the regularly scheduled exam. The following grading scale will be used to determine the final grade in this course. Because bonus points and extra credit are available throughout the semester, it is unlikely that a grading curve will be used. A represents exceptionally high achievement as a result of aptitude, effort, and intellectual initiative B represents high achievement as a result of ability and effort C represents average achievement, the minimum expected of a college student D represents minimum passing grade except for courses taken on a pass/fail basis F indicates failure in a course. Credit can be obtained only by repeating the course successfully. Dates and assignments documented in this syllabus and the accompanying schedule of classes are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. 4 BIS /6 STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Submission of work (individual tests, homework, etc.) under your name certifies that the work submitted is your own work. When group work is submitted, all individuals listed certify that the work is a product of their group effort. Cheating on the tests/quizzes, labs, a paper, or assignments is a direct violation of NKU s honor code and must be reported to the Department Chair and to the Dean of Students. A violation will result in a failure of that assignment (test/quiz/lab) and possible additional action depending on the severity. The College of Business has in addition its own Code of Student Conduct, created by student organizations which may be found at CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: Out of courtesy to your fellow students and to the instructor, please observe the following rules of etiquette: Show up on time. If you arrive late, please enter quietly and minimize distractions. Turn off all electronic communications devices (cell phones, pagers, etc.). If you are expecting an important call, please advise the instructor before class and sit close to the door. If your phone rings, leave the room before answering. Please feel free to ask questions in class. Side conversations, even about the class, are disruptive and you will be asked to share your comments with the class. INSTRUCTOR-STUDENT CONSULTATIONS: Office hours are posted on my office door and in Blackboard. These are times I am scheduled to be available. Outside of those times, if I happen to be in my office, I am happy to help you. Additional consultation times between the student and the instructor may be scheduled, if needed, at a mutually agreed time and place on campus. RESEARCH: From time to time you may be asked to participate in research studies conducted by other students or faculty. Generally, this data is gathered through a questionnaire and individuals will not be specifically identified. All of these studies will have an appropriate learning context for the class; None will be psychological or dangerous in nature. Everyone will be debriefed on the purpose of the study and anyone that wishes may have copies of the results. WITHDRAWAL AND INCOMPLETES: Up to and including the fifth week of the semester, students may withdraw from the class online at Norse Express, through their advisor, or through the Assistant Dean s office. Incompletes must be requested by the student in writing and must include a written plan to complete the necessary work prior to the mid-point of the next full semester.
