1 ENGLISH AND ENGLISH LITERATURE GCSE Information Evening 2016

2 ENGLISH LANGUAGE 0 100% Examination (+ Non Examined S&L component NOT counted towards the grade). During the course of the year, students will sit 2 practise exams on EVERY section of the papers and 2 Mock exams in January (in the hall, in full examination conditions) 2 Papers: Reading and Writing questions are on BOTH papers. BOTH exams are 1 hour 45 minutes in length and sat on 2 different days: 8700/1 Explorations in creative reading and writing 06 June 2017 am 8700/2 Writers viewpoints and perspectives 12 June 2017 am 50% each NO TIERING AVAILABLE

3 ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 1 Paper 1: In section A, this unit will test the readingof a literary source using a range of comprehension and language\structure\evaluation based questions. The questions will ask students to look at specific parts of the resource in some sections and the whole of the resource in others. In section B, students will need to respond to an image they are presented with. They will have a choice of 2 questions and these could be descriptive and\or narrative tasks. There is NO tiering available for this paper.

4 Sample breakdown of the exam: Section A ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 1 BREAKDOWN. Students answer Q1-4 as follows: (1 hour total: 15 minutes reading time, 1 minute per mark writing time, 5 minutes checking time) 1) List four things.. (4marks section of the text) 2) How does the writer use language to. (8marks section of the text) 3) How does the writer use structure to.. (8marks whole text) 4) To what extent do you agree. (20 marks section of the text)

5 Sample breakdown of the exam: Section B Students answer 1 question as follows: (45 minutes) ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 1 BREAKDOWN. 5) Write a description suggested by this picture. OR 6) Write the opening part of a story about a long train journey C\O mark = 24 T\A mark = 16

6 ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 2 Paper 2: In section A, this unit will test the readingof 2 non-fiction sources using a range of comprehension and language\structure\evaluation based questions. One of the sources will be from the 19 th century and one from the 20 th \21 st century. There will also be one literary non-fiction piece and one non-literary non fiction piece. The questions will ask students to look at specific parts of specific sources in some sections and the whole of a resource or both resources together in others. In section B, students will need to write in a non-fiction form for a specific purpose\audience. There is NO tiering available for this paper.

7 Sample breakdown of the exam: Section A ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 2 BREAKDOWN. Students answer Q1-4 as follows: (1 hour total: 15 minutes reading time, 1 minute per mark writing time, 5 minutes checking time) 1) Choose 4 statements which are TRUE.(4 marks section of text A) 2) Write a summary of. (8marks both full sources) 3) How does the writer s use of language.. (12 marks whole of source B) 4) How do the writers present. (16 marks Both full sources)

8 Sample breakdown of the exam: Section B Students answer 1 question as follows: (45 minutes) ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 2 BREAKDOWN. 5) Homework is of no value. Some students get it done for them; some don t do it at all. Students should be relaxing in their spare time. Write an article for a broadsheet newspaper in which you explain your point of view on this statement. C\O mark = 24 T\A mark = 16

9 ENGLISH LITERATURE 100% Examination During the course of the year, students will sit 2 practise exams on EVERY section of the papers and 2 Mock exams in February\March time in exam conditions. 2 Papers: Paper 1: Shakespeare and The 19 th Century Novel (40%) 1hr 45mins. 8702/1 22 nd May 2017 am Paper 2: Modern Prose or Drama and Poetry (60%) 2hrs 15mins. 8702/2 26 th May 2017 am All exams are CLOSED TEXT and there will be NO tiering.

10 ENGLISH LITERATURE PAPER 1 Section A requires students to answer a question on the Shakespeare play they studied in year 10 and will have revised thoroughly in year 11). This will either be: Romeo and Juliet, Macbethor Much Ado About Nothing.Students will be given an extract from the play and asked to comment on this before widening their answer to the text as a whole. It could ask them how a character\theme\idea\setting is used in the extract\play. In this section there is also a mark out of 4 for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Section B requires students to answer a question on the 19 th century novel they have studied in year 11. This will be either Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hydeor A Christmas Carol. As before, students will be given an extract from the novel and asked to comment on this before widening their answer to the text as a whole. It could ask them how a character\theme\idea\setting is used in the extract\novel. Candidates are not permitted to take copies of the set texts into the examination (but we do recommend that they buy their own copy for revision purposes)

11 Sample breakdown of the exam: Section A Students answer 1 question: (55 minutes) ENGLISH LITERATURE PAPER 1 BREAKDOWN. Part a) How does Shakespeare present Lady Macbeth in this speech? Part b) How is Lady Macbeth presented in the play as a whole? (30 marks + 4 SPaG) Sample breakdown of the exam: Section B Students answer 1 question: (50 minutes) Part a) How does Dickens present Scrooge in this extract? Part b) How is Scrooge presented as an outsider to society in the novel? (30 marks)

12 ENGLISH LITERATURE PAPER 2 In section A, students will answer a question about the modern text or drama they have studies in year 11. This will be either Never Let Me Go, Blood Brothersor Lord of the Flies.Students will not be given an extract this time and will have to make reference to the text as a whole to answer the question. They will be given bullet points to help them to structure their work. It could ask them how a character\theme\idea\setting is used in the extract\play. In this section there is also a mark out of 4 for spelling, punctuation and grammar. In section B, students will answer a question based on the poetry cluster (Conflict) they have studied in year 10 (and will revise thoroughly in year 11). Students will be given 1 poem from the cluster and asked to choose another to comparethis to. They will have a list of the poems they have studied but not the poems themselves. It could ask them how a theme or feelings are presented in the poems.

13 ENGLISH LITERATURE PAPER 2 CONTINUED In section C, students will answer a question on 2 poems they have not seen before. This question is split into two parts; part A requires students to discuss only the 1 st poem (24 marks). Part B asks the students to compare these poems (8 marks). Once again, the questions could focus on themes, ideas or feelings present in the poetry. The comparison in part B will focus on the same concept as that given in part A. Candidates are not permitted to take copies of the set texts into the examination (but we do recommend that they buy their own copy of the text for section A for revision purposes)

A) How does Ishiguro present fear about the future in Never Let Me Go? * Write about how Ishiguro uses different characters to present fear about the future * Write about how Ishiguro presents these ideas by the way he writes. (30 marks + 4 SPaG) Sample breakdown of the exam: Section B Students answer 1 question: (45 minutes) B) Compare the ways ideas about power are presented in Ozymandiasand in one other poem from the Conflict cluster. (30 marks)

A) In To A Daughter Leaving Home,how does the poet present the speaker s feelings about her daughter? (24 marks) B) In both Poem for My Sisterand To A Daughter Leaving Home the speakers describe feelings about watching someone they love grow up. Compare the way the poets present those feelings (8 marks)

16 THE YEAR 11 STUDENT BOOKS All students will receive a student handbook\workbook this year for Language and Literature which will have in it: Revision materials Mark schemes Exemplar papers Exemplar answers with examiner comments Tracking sheets (question by question)

17 SUPPORT AVAILABLE; ENHANCEMENTS Enhancement sessions are the very bestsupport available to your child. A list of enhancement classes is published at the beginning of each half term and displayed in the corridor and on the VLE. This can also be found in the Raw Release. Students are told about these and advised to go to the ones most befitting their needs. From this point forward right up to the exams in May/June, there will always be examination skills enhancements running for either or both Literature and Language. We also employ use a period 6 enhancement which is compulsory. Students must attend this as they do any other lesson on their timetable.

19 SUPPORT AVAILABLE; REVISION GUIDES There are a whole host of revision guides and students can find out about these from the LRC. Students will also have access to a wide range of revision booklets from the sleeves in the English corridor. The Mr. Bruffwebsite (address on next slide) comes very highly recommended and has a shop from which very good, purpose written guides are available. There is also a school Twitter feed updated with links and materials for revision.

20 SUPPORT AVAILABLE HELPFUL WEBSITES The caveat to these sites is that students need to be selective; most of these cover the content of GCSE exams for ALL boards, they should look ONLY at the material the need for their AQA GCSE studies of English. Students must also use the VLE to access revision materials.

21 PARENTAL SUPPORT Ensure students are aware when their examinations are, and that they are prepared for each assessment. Encourage your child to access online revision sites and attend relevant enhancements regularly. Encourage your child to read widely(both fiction and non-fiction). They should have read their set Literature text at least 3 timesbefore the exam. Encourage your child to complete the homework tasks under exam conditions Encourage your child to self assess their work before handing it in to the teacher thus emphasising the importance of planning and checking work Encourage your child to collect a range of non fictions texts from the 19 th, 20 th and 21 st centuries and analyse these on a weekly basis.
