N5209C Meeting Location & Time: MSMHA Conference Room, Building th Floor (prosection activities will be in the lab) Class meets irregularly Tuesdays 10am-Noon, plus occasional Monday and Friday afternoon sessions (see schedule at the end of the syllabus) Course Description: This course offers an advanced teaching experience in the Anesthesiology Assistant section of a graduate level human gross anatomy course. As a student in this course, you have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience as a gross anatomy educator. You will develop and deliver content for a Master s level gross anatomy course. Credits: Variable (1-3). 1 credit is equivalent to approximately 45hrs of coursework (including both mandatory classroom work and independent work on your own time). 1 credit = prosection activities only 2 credits = lecture activities only 3 credits = both prosection + lecture activities Course Prerequisites Enrollment is by permission of the MSMHA program director and course director only. Student must have successfully completed year 1 of the MS in Modern Human Anatomy program, including passing the Human Body Block, as well as successfully completed 1 credit of teaching practicum. 1 P age
2 Educational Goals & Learning Objectives This course provides graduate students in Modern Human Anatomy with a hands-on, supervised experience as a gross anatomy lecturer and/or lab instructor in a graduate-level setting. By the end of the course, students engaged in the lecture experience should be able to: Describe the purpose of learning objectives Critique learning objectives for a regional anatomy lecture and lab Explain the strengths and weaknesses of multiple choice questions Critique multiple choice questions Prepare a multiple choice assessment for a regional anatomy topic Plan a 1hr regional anatomy lecture By the end of the course, students engaged in the prosection experience should be able to: Describe the purpose of learning objectives Critique learning objectives for a regional anatomy lecture and lab Produce a prosection for a specific anatomical region Plan a 2hr regional anatomy lab demonstration Course Schedule: A detailed schedule is provided at the end of this syllabus. The class meets irregularly throughout the semester to accommodate the schedule of the AA Human Gross Anatomy class. Students are strongly encouraged to play close attention to the schedule. Note that coursework may be due on a day when there is no scheduled class meeting; please assignments to Dr. Royer by 5pm on the due date. All students are required to attend the Course Orientation session 10am-Noon Tuesday, January 21 st. Students enrolled in the 1-credit Prosection Experience option must attend all propsection-related activities on the schedule (shown in purple). Students enrolled in the 2- credit Lecture Experience option must attend all lecture-related activities on the schedule (shown in blue). Students enrolled in the 3-credit combined Prosection + Lecture Experience option must attend all scheduled activities (purple + blue). In addition to the scheduled class time, this course requires significant work during your own time. Estimates for this workload have been included in the total coursework for the class (see schedule). 2 P age
3 Class Pedagogies Students will take turns presenting work related to their assigned educational activity in advance of the presentation to the AA class. A discussion will follow each presentation, with students and faculty providing constructive feedback and critiques to the presenter. Active participation by each student is essential. Following the presentation of their educational activity, each student will prepare a selfevaluation, reflecting on the experience and addressing comments provided by the AA student evaluations. There are no formal lectures and no exams in this course. Required & Recommended Course Materials Required: Clinically Oriented Anatomy (Moore, Dalley & Agur), 6 th or 7 th editions Cadaver Dissection Guide, Visible Human Dissector (if engaged in prosection activities) Scrubs and proper lab attire (if engaged in prosection activities) Dissection tools (if engaged in prosection activities) Recommended: A comprehensive regional atlas of human anatomy (e.g., Grant s, Netter s, Rohen s) PowerPoint or other software for developing slides Assessment & Grading Policy A letter grade will be assigned, following the MSMHA program scale: A = %, B = %, C = %, D = %, F < 60% As this is a variable credit course, the assessment follows a different scheme depending on the number of credits for which each student is enrolled. Please refer to the appropriate subheading below. Lecture Experience (2 credits) This experience focuses on the development of one (1) 50-minute regional anatomy lecture. The student will select one (1) regional anatomy topic from the list below, and complete the following activities: 3 P age
4 Activity Grade (%) Develop learning objectives for a regional anatomy lecture 5 Present learning objectives to faculty and peers for discussion 5 Develop lecture outline for a regional anatomy lecture 5 Present lecture outline to faculty and peers for discussion 5 Deliver 1 st practice presentation of your lecture to faculty and peers for discussion 10 Deliver 2 nd practice presentation of your lecture to faculty and peers for discussion 10 Develop assessment module for your regional anatomy lecture 5 Deliver lecture to AA class 20 Write a self-evaluation paper reflecting on your teaching experience, progress, and address student, peer and faculty evaluations 30 Attend all lecture-related presentations by your peers, and offer constructive feedback on peer evaluation forms 5 Lecture Experience Final Grade 100 Choice of Regional Anatomy Topics (date of educational activity) A) Sole of Foot (1-2pm, Monday February 24 th ) B) Posterior Abdominal Wall (2-3pm, Tuesday March 18 th ) C) Oral Cavity (1-2pm, Monday April 28 th ) Prosection Experience (1 credit) This experience focuses on the completion of the independent dissection of a focal region, and the development of a guided 1-hour demonstration of that region for the AA class. The student will select one (1) focal region from the list below, and complete the following activities: Activity Grade (%) Develop and present learning objectives and structures list for focal region 10 Perform independent cadaveric dissection of focal region 20 Deliver a practice presentation of the demonstration to faculty and peers 10 Deliver the guided demonstration to the AA class 25 Write a self-evaluation paper reflecting on your teaching experience, progress, and addressing student, peer and faculty evaluations 30 Attend all prosection-related presentations by your peers, and offer constructive feedback on peer evaluation form 5 Prosection Experience Final Grade P age
5 Choice of Prosection Focal Regions (date of educational activity) D) Sole of Foot & Limb Joints (2-4pm, Friday February 28 th ) E) Pelvis & Perineum (2-4pm, Friday April 4 th ) F) Orbit, Nasal Cavity & Palate, Pharynx & Larynx(2-4pm, Friday May 2 nd ) Prosection + Lecture Experience (3 credits) This experience includes all activities outlined above for both the Prosection and Lecture Experience. Students enrolled in this option must select a prosection region and lecture topic that occur in different Units of the AA class, to ensure sufficient time to prepare for both aspects. Please refer to schedule for more details. Grading for this option will be as above, with the final grade weighted relative to the credits assigned to both sets of activities: Activities Grade (%) Prosection Experience Final Grade 33 Lecture Experience Final Grade 67 Final Grade 100 Exams There are no exams for this course. Code of Conduct Policy Students are expected to abide by the Graduate School s Student Academic Honor & Conduct Code, as well as the MSMHA Honor Policy. As a student educator, you are expected to act in a professional manner befitting a faculty member. As part of this course, you may be working closely with human cadavers provided by the Anatomical Board of the State of Colorado. It is a privilege to work and learn with donated human cadavers. To honor this privilege, you must treat all cadavers and donated remains with respect, dignity and decorum. To this end, you are expected to adhere to the lab rules and guidelines outlined in ANAT 5107 Human Gross Anatomy. You are expected to behave as a role model for the AA students. If a relative or friend made an anatomical gift donation to the Anatomical Board of the State of Colorado within the last 2 years, please notify the Course Director as soon as possible so that we may pre-screen the class specimens. Professionalism & Other Expectations As a student in this course, you have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience as a gross anatomy educator. You are charged with developing and delivering content for a Master s level 5 P age
6 gross anatomy course. As such, you are expected to behave in a professional manner. This includes appropriate dress during student encounters, punctuality and adhering to deadlines. In addition, you are expected to contribute constructive feedback to you peers in the class. You must also be ready to accept constructive feedback from your peers, faculty as well as the students in the AA class, and work to revise and improve your presentations as you progress throughout the course. For peer evaluation to be successful, mandatory attendance is required. Religious Holiday Accommodations It is your responsibility to notify the course director by the end of the 2 nd week of the semester if you anticipate a conflict between your observance of religious holiday(s) and your duties for this course. Disability Services Students with documented disabilities should inform the Course Director as soon as possible to discuss and arrange for reasonable accommodations. Incomplete Policy Incomplete grades are not granted for low academic performance. To be eligible for an Incomplete grade, students must: 1) Successfully complete a minimum of 75% of the course 2) Have special circumstances beyond their control that preclude them from attending class and/or completing graded assignments and coursework. Note that verification of special circumstances is required. 3) Make arrangements to complete missing assignments with the original instructor. Resolution of Conflicts Good faith efforts will be made by students, faculty, and MSMHA program and Graduate School administration to settle all appeals, complaints and grievances on an informal basis. Such efforts include conferences between the persons directly involved and others who may help solve the problems. Formal conflict resolution policies are detailed in the policies and procedures of the Graduate School, University of Colorado Denver. 6 P age
