1 Math Intermediate Algebra INSTRUCTOR CLASS REQUIREMENTS Text(s): Instructor: Dr. Manizheh Nafari Office: MRC-ESEE1112 Telephone: Individual Office hours: M, 12:10 pm- 12:40 pm in MRC-ESEE1112 Class Meetings: MW, 12:50 p.m. 3:40 p.m. in ESEE1105 District Course Requirements Text(s): Not Required/Optional: Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, 4th edition, by Elayn Martin-Gay Required: MyMathLab(MML) is required to successfully complete the online homework. The textbook content is online in MyMathLab. The MML Student Access Registration Code may be purchased at the Southeast Campus bookstore or online at The course ID code is NOT the same as the registration code. Special Materials: Campus Cruiser address is required for this course; it is also expected that you will check and Campus Cruiser daily. A basic scientific calculator is recommended. Students must show work to get credit for correct graphing problems. Graphs obtained by using a graphing calculator only will receive no credit. Cell phones may not be used as calculators. Cell phones must be silent and remain out of site in the classroom. Bring paper, graph paper, and pencil to class each day. Focus: This is a noncredit course and is designed to prepare the student for success in College Algebra. This course cannot be used to fulfill degree requirements and will NOT count toward graduation or your grade point average. This class will provide an overview of the concepts of intermediate algebra. The material includes but is not limited to the following concepts: solving systems of equations, writing and graphing functional linear equations, solving inequalities, evaluating radical and rational expressions, graphing and solving quadratic, exponential and logarithmic equations. The course will consist of homework and/or quizzes, and exams. Four unit exams and a comprehensive final exam will be given during the course of the semester. The unit exams will be based on homework problems. A schedule of exam dates is included in this

2 document. There will be no make-up of unit exams without prior approval from the instructor. Contact me by phone or before the last day to take the exam if you will not be able to test by that date. The instructor must be notified before the last day to test ends and later provided with written proof of inability to comply. Such proof includes but is not limited to a doctor's note, a police report, police accident report, a court order, an employer's note, an obituary notice, military orders, or a TCC dean's notice. Student's who are restricted from attending school due to religious holidays must notify the instructor in advance to make alternative testing arrangements. Homework will be completed online using MyLab. Homework or quizzes will not be accepted late for any reason. There is no makeup for homework or quizzes. Technical problems with the computer or software will not be accepted as an excuse for late homework and an extension of time will not be given. I will drop your three lowest homework grades to compensate for the no-makeup policy. Student access to computers, computer tutorials, textbook video-recordings, and math tutoring are available in the Math Resource Center located in ESEE Additional resources can be found on the website for the SE Math Resource Center: Requirements: Attendance: Attendance is crucial for success in this class. Please be prompt and do not leave early. Should you arrive 20 minutes after class has begun, you will be counted absent. Also should situations arise that you must leave early, please let me know in advance. Should you leave early without advance notice, you will be counted absent for that day. The instructor may ask the student to leave the classroom if their behavior is disruptive to class. Such behavior may include, but is not limited to the use of electronic devices, eating, talking, or outbursts. You will be asked to sign an attendance policy!!! TCC has implemented a new attendance policy: Students who miss 15% of the class meetings and do not keep up with course assignments may be dropped at the discretion of their instructors. Math Resource Center Lab Assignments: Students will earn 5% of the final course grade by working on completion of assignments in the Southeast Campus Math Resource Center (ESEE 1112). A 1-hour per week assignment will be completed in the Math Resource Center (MRC). The MRC will keep track of students who earn the weekly grade. Test/Final Exam: There will be four tests and a comprehensive final. The four tests will be taken in the Math Testing Center (ESEE 1120). Calculators for testing will be provided by the MTC. Request for a makeup test beyond the instructor's deadline must be made in advance of the test deadline and must student must provide documentation. The final exam will be taken in class at the time assigned by the college. Please plan now for the final exam, early final exam requests will not be approved because of poor

3 planning. Official documentation must accompany any request for an early final exam and documentation does not necessary result in approval. Assistance with Math Assignments: Any help that you may need outside of class or office hours will be provided by the Math Resource Center (ESEE 1112). Grading Criteria: Math Resource Center (MRC) Hours of Operation Monday Thursday 7:30am-10:00pm Friday 7:30am - 5pm Saturday 9:00am - 3pm Final Course Grade is based on the following: MyLab homework: 10% Math Resource Center Lab Assignment: 5% Class work and quizzes: 5% Tests 60% Final Exam 20% Grading scale: = A = B = C = D = F Suggestions for successful completion of the course: o Be in class and be on time. o Make homework a priority. Math is a skill that you MUST practice. o Do your homework daily. Do not play catch up. You cannot afford to miss an assignment or test! A grade of zero will be recorded should you miss a test! o Pay attention in class and take notes. Phones or any other electronic device may NOT be out during class. o Do not be afraid to ask questions. o Attend each test review. o Be respectful to your instructor and to your fellow classmates. Cellular phones/laptops should be SWITCHED OFF during all classes & all tests. Cellular-phone/Laptops use is not permitted in class. If your behavior during the class becomes a problem, I will impose a point penalty on your next test or your MyLab homework.

Quizzes may or may not be announced. TEST DEADLINES (subject to change at instructor s discretion) Test 1: Chapters 4 and 8, by February 2 Test 2: Chapter 9 and 10.1 through 10.4, by February 10 Test 3: Chapter 10, part 2 and Chapter 11, by February 24 Test 4: Chapter 12 and 13.1, by March 5 Final Exam: Wednesday, March 7 in classroom. The final exam will be taken in class. The final exam date will be announced. This outline is a suggested pace for the course. It is subject to change and students will be notified a week in advance of the change. It is the student's responsibility to check their account and make contact with the instructor for updated information when absent from class. The pace of this course is well suited to comprehension of the material. Tests are due in the testing center by the date and time stated by your instructor. A grade of zero will be recorded if you should miss a test. All requests for late or make-up tests require instructor approval. A grade of zero on a test may not be replaced!
