1 MATH 0310 College Algebra Prep, Fall 2017 Summer Creek High School Instructor: Anthony Rwehumbiza Room 2108 Phone: Tutoring times: Tuesday and Thursday Website: Textbook: Intermediate Algebra 7th Edition Elayn Martin- Gay ISBN Catalog Description: Topics for all formats include basic algebraic operations, solving linear equations and inequalities, laws of integer exponents, factoring, rational expressions, the Cartesian coordinate system, graphing lines, finding equations of lines and solving linear systems. This course carries institutional credit but will not transfer and will not be used to meet degree requirements. Calculator Usage: Graphing Calculators are not allowed in this course Math 0310 Major Course Outcomes: Define, represent, and perform operations on real and complex numbers. Recognize, understand, and analyze features of a function. Recognize and use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures (including factoring), and algorithms to combine, transform, and evaluate absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational expressions. Identify and solve absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational equations. Identify and solve absolute value and linear inequalities. Model, interpret and justify mathematical ideas and concepts using multiple representations. Connect and use multiple strands of mathematics in situations and problems, as well as in the study of other disciplines. Solve quadratic equations and applications using methods including the quadratic formula, factoring, completing the square, and extracting roots.
2 Attendance and participation: Attendance in this class is required. Be present and on time!! I do not distinguish between excused or unexcused absences. If you are not here, you are missing instructions, which will impede your success. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact another student for assignments before the next class. Work assigned during your absence and due the next class meeting is due for you as well. All students are expected to participate fully in the class Electronics: Absolutely no electronics may be used in the classroom. This includes cell phones, ipad, smart devices, and music players, laptops which are disruptive and distractive to the learning environment of the classroom. There are no exceptions. Use of your cell phone is prohibited at all times when class is in session. Cell phones should be silenced and put away. Semester Grade Distribution: Course grades will be calculated as follows: Percent of Details Category Course Grade Homework, classwork, quizzes, etc. 20% Average of 5 tests 60% Final Exam 20% Tests will not be multiple choice. Partial credit may be given for correct work toward solving the problem. All students are required to take all 5 tests. No tests grades will be dropped. Test grades will not be changed for test corrections, etc. and test retakes are not allowed. The final exam will be comprehensive. Every student must take the final exam. There are no exemptions in this course. You MUST make a grade of 50 or better on the final to be able to progress to the corresponding college level course. In order to proceed to a corresponding college level course at a participating institution, you MUST earn a 75 or better in the course. There is NO provision for extra credit in this class. Grading: A = ; B = 89 80; C = 79 70; D = 69 60; F = 59 0 Upon completion of the course with a final grade of 75% or above, students will be able to register for the next sequence class Math 1314(College Algebra) offered in spring 2018 NOTE: There is NO provision for earning extra credit in this course. You MUST receive a grade of 75% or above in order to proceed to the next class. 2

Class Policy: Our classroom will have an environment conducive to learning. Examples of disruptive behavior include, but are not limited to the following: talking while the teacher is teaching discussing non-mathematical issues during class coming to class late sleeping using cellphone in class eating or chewing gum in class leaving the class without the instructor s permission Use of cell phones (and other electronic devices) is prohibited at all times when class is in session with no exceptions Class disruptions will result in a phone call to your parents. If the phone call to your parents does not produce the desired improvement in your behavior, an office referral will follow immediately. Non-Negotiable Misbehaviors: (any violations of the following nature will result in an immediate office referral) Profanity Violence Insubordination Severe disruption of the educational process (Please refer to the Humble ISD Parent/Student Handbook for the Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct is an addendum to the handbook.) Bullying/Harassment Academic Honesty Policy: Students found to have engaged in academic dishonesty shall be subject to grade penalties on assignments or tests and disciplinary penalties in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct Academic dishonesty includes cheating or copying the work of another student, plagiarism, and unauthorized communication between students during an examination 3
