Pearson / Prentice Hall Publishers, 3 rd edition, Office Hours: By Appointment Only Also Required: Extra large spiral notebook Pencil or pen Scientific Calculator (Graphing Calculators such as TI-83 or TI-84 may be used only during lecture sessions) Prerequisites: MTH 093 with a grade of C or above, qualifying score on the ASSET test. Elementary concepts of algebra will be covered, including solving linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, and linear systems; operations on polynomials; factoring; graphing linear equations; slope; introduction to functions; appropriate word problems. Use of a calculator is recommended. Course Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. identify and use rules of algebra and exponents. 2. perform fundamental operations on polynomials, including factoring. 3. solve linear equations and inequalities. 4. solve 2x2 and 3x3 linear systems of equations. 5. solve quadratic equations by factoring. 6. identify intercepts, and draw graphs of lines. 7. compute the slope, and write equations of lines. 8. solve applications using linear, quadratic, and systems of equations. 9. define and evaluate functions. 10. recognize the relationship between arithmetic and algebra.

2 Attendance: Attendance at every class meeting is absolutely essential. If an emergency arises and you must miss a class, you are responsible for learning the material that you missed. Assume that we have continued with the next section(s) in the book. Class work including projects, quizzes, and tests may NOT be made up. The student must give the instructor advance notice if an exam is to be taken early only for a documented schedule conflict. If you miss more than one class meeting, this may result in the assignment of a Teacher F. This is not a W. Do not miss class casually at the beginning of the semester! Tests and Grading: Your grade is determined from points earned from projects, chapter exams, and the mandatory, cumulative final exam. There will be six chapter exams, one per chapter. The two lowest chapter exam scores will be dropped in calculation of the final grade. A student may elect to take a chapter exam before the scheduled test date in the testing center in case of a schedule conflict. This accommodation will be granted only once during the semester. A student who is late for an exam may not take the exam once a classmate has finished his or her exam. Make-up exams will not be given. No test may be taken after the results have been discussed in class. Failure to report to class on test days, if prior arrangements have not been made, will result in a grade of 0 for that test. Other class work may not be made up under any circumstances. Final grades will be computed based on a cumulative total points earned on the highest 4 exam scores, projects, and the final using the following grading scale. This practice will allow you to understand concepts, which will be emphasized in class and on tests. Homework will be discussed but not collected. You will be informed if a specific assignment is to be turned in for a grade. It is suggested that you keep all homework organized in a spiral notebook, as this work will be a valuable study tool for exams. You are responsible for knowing about all announcements, changes in the syllabus, exams, etc. made in class

3 Classroom Policies 1. Respect for one another and classroom decorum will be maintained at all times. Students are expected to adhere to SSC's code of conduct with respect to academics and behavior. 2. Class will begin on time. Coming late to class is considered to be the same as absent in this course. No exceptions will be considered to this policy. 3. Cell phones must be turned off during class. They are not permitted on your desk during tests, and may not be used as a calculator. If you leave the room to answer your phone, you may not return until the following class period, and half of an absence will be recorded. 4. All quizzes and tests have a time limit. Students must turn in assignments within the allotted time. Keep graded work for review for final. Grade reports will made available to you periodically throughout the semester. If a question arises, it is your responsibility to produce the original document for verification. 5. Attendance is taken at the beginning of every class. Cheating / plagiarizing will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment and, at the discretion of the instructor, a failing grade for the course. 8. South Suburban College is smoke-free. 9.
