3 What is EQAO? A standardized test given to Grade 3 and 6 students in Ontario based on the Reading, Writing, and Mathematics Curriculum.

4 Why Do We Have Provincial Tests? EQAO Education Quality and Accountability Office The provincial test tells us: how our students are doing areas that need more attention or resources in schools how schools can improve

5 When Do Students Write the Test? Between May 26th and June 8th, 2016 Grade 3 June 1, 2 & 3 Grade 6 May 26, 27 & 30

6 What Do Assessment Days Look Like? Assessment Sessions Each day will be broken into two assessment blocks: 9:30 am 10:50 am 11:30 am 12:50pm

7 What does the test look like? 3 booklets Each has two sections Each section takes about one hour to write Assessment takes place in student s classrooms Administered by classroom teachers Students work independently Previous text booklets available at

30 Grade 3 Preparing Students for EQAO Continue to discuss with your child his/her thinking process and problem solving approach to reading and math Use the resources found on-line at past test questions, rubrics and scoring guides are provided. Try to avoid any negative comments regarding the test and continue to infuse your son/daughter with confidence and positive self talk. Try to avoid making appointments during the testing period as your child s attendance is very important. Lastly, we suggest taking it easy the days leading up to the test as students will be working hard and will need plenty of rest and relaxation (some suggestions include a movie night, early to bed and some fresh air). Your son/daughter will be more than prepared by the work they have done in school and the support they receive from home.

31 Grade 6 Throughout the year, students have been learning test taking skills (i.e., re-reading questions, highlighting what is being asked, including ALL steps needed to come up with a solution, moving on to another question if/when faced with difficulty, checking over the test before handing it in) We are completing previous EQAO tests in class We have introduced students to previous math EQAO questions in our unit tests

32 Absences Try to make sure that your child will not be away If your child is absent on the day(s) the test is administered, your child may write it up until June 7

33 EQAO Results Available in the fall EQAO test results provide a snapshot of your child s achievement in relation to the provincial standard Important to look at other information to see how your child is doing Talk with the teacher about how you can support your child at home

34 How Can Parents Help? Establish a daily homework routine, including reading every day Show an interest in what your child is doing, learning, and reading Share your thinking when problem solving or making a decision Encourage your child to share his/her ideas Involve your child in planning family activities Try out some ideas in the Parent Guides in your handout Supporting your son or daughter during EQAO: Make sure they get a good night s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and lunch Get your child to school on time Celebrate their efforts and achievements everyday!
