3. Chapter Activities 3.1 Workshop on Entrepreneurship and Business innovation. SPIE chapter students participated in the workshop on Entrepreneurship and Business innovation organized between Tecnológico de Monterrey (campus León) and Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica. The workshop was focused on the issues involved in integrating ideas of entrepreneurship and business innovation into PhDs and Msc programs in optics. At this event attended businessmen from various local industrial sectors linking and interacting research from CIO with industrial sector. In this event students talk about their own research projects and people from Tecnológico de Monterrey gave talks about opening industries and business. 6 Research projects by CIO students CIO and Tecnológico de Monterrey assistants 3.2 Spring 2010 Workshop DRAFT assistance in Tucson Arizona. On March 1-3 officers from the SPIE-CIO student chapter attended to the Spring 2010 Workshop DRAFT, event in which different industry sectors attend workshops and talks organized by the Optical College of the University of Arizona with the aim of linking directly with research, even investing on issues who develop graduate students. At this event attend businessmen from various sectors, from lens manufacturers to the US Army. The purpose of attending the workshop was to interact directly in such high profile events linking research with the industrial sector and have the necessary tools to organize events like this in Mexico that link Academy with industry. Also was held a meeting between directives of SPIE CIO Chapter and University of Arizona Chapter, in which share ideas and experiences, also agreements was

reached as to extend the bi-national participation between both Chapters with talks, conferences and other activities. Event photos: Affiliates Group photo spring. Arizona University and CIO chapter officers meeting.

Arizona University and CIO students and professors 3.3 Astronomy Fans Club We began with the astronomy Club, whose main purpose is divulge the astronomy between CIO members, share knowledge and experiences about astronomy, do observations with telescopes and binoculars, rediscover night sky and have fun. On Thursday, March 18 the club was honored to open the activities with a talk given by Dr. Daniel Malacara, who talks about telescopes and mainly of his first amateur observations. In the first month of the club, moon observations were done, looking over its surface craters and plains. Vesta asteroid, Venus and Mercury from the top of Cerro Gordo hill were observed too. Night-out observations to the sky away from the city lights were organized during the summer. Another activities related with the club are talks and conferences about astronomy by guests, researchers and CIO staff, and club members. We also are planning visits to observatories, and a workshop focused to build telescopes. Event photos:

3.4 Visiting schools is small towns Student chapter officers and Dra. Solano group visited high schools in small towns around the city of Leon. The main idea was to talk about the laser and its 50 th anniversary to young people and prepare some science experiments for them. Many high schools in small towns have no access to lasers and most of them ignore the real potential and applications of lasers. For this reason we think that it is important to continue with those activities in our community. Students talking about lasers and SPIE student activities Some experiments and exhibitions in elementary and high schools

3.5 Student s lectures and talks On april 9 in the festivities of the 30 aniversary of the CIO, the Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas A.C. (CIMAT) organized a series of talks and workshops for children. Both events have the objective of promote and rise in math and science. This year, the CIMAT invited institutions to give lectures an science demonstrations. CIO was also invited and the SPIE Chapter developed the anaglyph worwshop. Those anaglyphs are images in two dimensions and a 3D effect occurs when they are viewed with special glasses (different color for each eye). They are based on the phenomenon of synthesis of binocular vision patented by Louis Ducos du Hauron in In the workshop the children made their own lens with which they could observe the 3D images. In addition students supported origami workshops and group guide. Event photos: SPIE-CIO Students organizing and giving the anaglyph workshop at CIMAT. 12 3.6 Workshops for medium and high school students As the last three years, CIO Student chapter organize the High School and Optic Workshop. The 4th annual Optic Workshop was organized from April 27 th to April 29 th and a total of 84 students from different local high schools assisted to the workshop. The same experiments and exhibitions from 2009 were done. Small talks about some optical phenomenal like diffraction light and image formation using simple lenses were given. Laboratory explanations were prepared in order to generate a scientific way to think on youth people besides understanding the nature of light. Students interact in experiments and demonstrations like interferometers and waveguides and learn about wave nature of light and reflection. Practical explanations for a simple microscopy and telescopes help us to demonstrate real and virtual images on an easy and funny way. Holograms and polarization experiments also were discussed.
