1 Principles of Cellular Biology BIOLOGY 4A TICKET #: Syllabus for SPRING 2018 IMPORTANT CONTACT INFORMATION Steve Teh Phone: (949) Webpage: o click on Bio 4A link Office: SCI 219 Office Hours: o MW PM o TTh 12 1 PM Course Description: Biology 4A is the first of a two course sequence intended for biology majors completing the Biology AS-T or A.S degrees and all biology type majors, allied health majors (pre-med, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical & occupational therapy, veterinary medicine, etc.). Biology 4A covers the principles and applications of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure and function, biological molecules, homeostasis, cell reproduction and its controls, molecular genetics, classical/mendelian genetics, cell metabolism including photosynthesis and respiration, cellular communication and evolution. The philosophy of science, methods of scientific inquiry and experimental design are foundational to the course. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Students completing Biology 4A will understand cellular communication. Students completing Biology 4A will comprehend cellular genetics. Students completing Biology 4A will understand cellular metabolism. 3 THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS! If there is a problem with the exam or quiz dates, see me well in advance so other arrangements can be made. Exams and quizzes will be given at the beginning of class. If you show up late, you will not be allowed to take the exam or quiz and it will be recorded as a zero. Students who fail to take two exams should consider dropping from the course. The final must be taken by all students. ATTENDANCE: Since many of the questions on the tests will come from the lecture material, it is critical that students attend all class meetings. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the notes from a fellow student. If your number of absences exceeds the number of hours the class meets in two weeks, you may be dropped from the course by the instructor. After 11 APRIL 2018 you cannot officially be dropped from the course. This is the last day you can receive a "W" (Withdrawal). After this date you must be given a grade in the course. If you are late to class, it is your responsibility to report it to the instructor at the end of class. If you don't, it will be counted as an absence. Each time you are late, you will need to provide lunch for you fellow classmates. Your grade will be lowered for excessive absences and lateness. It is ultimately the student s responsibility to drop themselves from the course if they decide not to attend the class. Poor attendance after the drop date will result in the loss of one grade level (i.e. a student will fall from an A to a B ) in the final analysis of your grade. POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Cheating and Plagiarism are violations of the college's policy and are considered serious offenses. The Department of Biological Sciences takes all incidences of academic dishonesty seriously and acts accordingly. I reserve the right to give an "F" for the assignment, test and/or class and the matter will be brought up to the Vice President of Student Service as stated in the school's current College Catalog. In other words, "DON'T CHEAT OR PLAGIARIZE"!!!!!! You will be working with laboratory partners in Bio 4A. You are responsible to understanding and knowing what constitutes plagiarism. If you have any concerns, please come see me. You are expected to collaborate and contribute to your group s work: lab procedures, data collection, discussions, written report and even clean up. Some assignments involve collaborative efforts, others are individual assignments. Individual assignments are to be YOUR original work and written individually. Non-original ideas in your work needs to be scientifically cited. Figures and figure captions should also be in your own words. Please read, download the Academic Integrity agreement and turn it in by the end of the second week. Assignment due dates and times: Unless otherwise stated, lab worksheets are due one week after the laboratory data is collected. For example, if you finish a lab Monday, the lab worksheet will be due the following Monday. All lab worksheets will be handed in during the first 10 minutes of lab, and at no other times. Do not attempt to slide your work under that of others. Be proud of your work; do work that makes you proud. If you need to hide your work from the instructor, then don t turn it in! Attempts to slide your work under that of others will result in the discard (un-graded) of that work. PLEASE DO NOT ME YOU ASSIGNMENTS UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. 4 GRADING: TENTATIVE GRADE SCALE: % = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D <60% = F Your TENTATIVE course grade will be comprised of the following: 4 Lecture Exams (100 pts each) pts Final Exam pts Quizzes (approximate) pts 2-4 Genetics quizzes. 60 pts 14 Lab Worksheets (10 pts each).140 pts Other Assignments (various pts each) pts Approximate Total points possible for lecture and lab: 900 pts Points and assignments are subject to change at the instructor s discretion to facilitate a more productive learning environment. Keep track of your grades with the spreadsheet that s downloadable from the course webpage. Quizzes: There WILL be announced and unannounced lecture or lab quizzes throughout the semester. Be prepared. Under normal circumstances, there will be no opportunity for making up quizzes! You will be given a zero for that quiz (exception of college excused emergencies). Because most of the quizzes will be taken at the beginning (some may be at the end) of the class time, it is critical that you be on time. Latecomers will be given quiz materials only if there is sufficient and reasonable time remaining to warrant an attempt. Late Assignments: Late assignments have been an issue. Remember this is your job to get your assignments submitted on time. ON TIME: turned in at the beginning of class or when the assignment is asked to be turned in (100% - any missed questions). LATE: turned in at the end of class (80% - any missed questions) o Turned in the next class (70% - any missed questions) o Turned in after 1 week (30% - any missed questions) If you re ill, please me before the assignment is due. 5 LABORATORY CLEAN-UP: It is your responsibility to clean up after yourselves in lab! It does not matter who makes the mess, please clean it up. For every minute that I spend clean up after you guys, I will deduct 10 points from everyone for each of those precious minutes (I clean very slowly)! I am not your mother! This includes not properly putting things away or in the correct/specified location(s). Please help keep the lab room neat and tiddy. ACCOMMODATION: All reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate students with disabilities. It is your responsibility to provide the documentation of your disability and resolve the appropriate accommodation(s) at the very beginning of the semester. NO students may use dictionaries or electronic translation devices during lecture exams or quizzes, including international students. Phones must be set on vibrate or another silent alert mode during class. Students that disrupt the class with these auditory devices will be removed from the class for that day and lose 10 points for each offense and have to dance in front of everyone to an one minute routine. The second offense will entail a song and a dance in addition the 25 pt deduction. We may use the Socrative App to answer questions and take quizzes during class. If you do not have a smart phone, you may use the computer in the class to complete the quiz. Please be courteous of others with your phone and laptop use during class. If you are late to class, you will be responsible for feeding your fellow classmates. we ll start out with donuts or bagels and then progress up to breakfast burritos, pizza or some other lunch items. Your fellow classmates are hungry! Be on time to class!
