5 Summer s Over Using the Poem See pages 8 9 for ideas to introduce the poem. Complete some or all of the following activities throughout the week. The activities that follow may be completed before, during, or after reading the poem. The scheduling of activities is up to the teacher s discretion and the students needs. Select the activities that best suit your purposes. Phonemic Awareness Ask students what sound they hear at the beginning of the word summer s. Have students identify the other words in the poem that have the /s/ sound at the beginning of the word (school). Then, ask students what sound they hear at the end of the word summer s. Have students identify the other words in the poem that have the /s/ sound at the end of the word. Provide students with Beginning or Ending Sound? (page 15). Have students identify the position of the /s/ sound in each word by filling in the first or second bubble. Phonics Write the words pool, cool, and rule on the board or on a sheet of chart paper. Have students identify the letters that make the /oo/ sound. Discuss the two different spelling patterns. Have students practice spelling the following words with the oo spelling pattern: tool, fool, and school. Fluency Divide the class into groups of four. Assign each child in the groups a different pair of lines from the poem. Provide sufficient time for each individual to practice his or her line and for the group to practice reciting the poem together. Then, allow groups of students to perform the poem for the rest of the class. Comprehension Have each student fold a sheet of construction paper in half. One half should be labeled Summer. Label the other half School. Discuss activities in which students would participate in each category. Have students draw pictures to depict what is happening in the poem. Word Study Extension Use page 16 to extend word concepts from the poem. Vocabulary Ask students to define the word rule. Are there other definitions with which they are familiar? Look up the word rule in the dictionary if necessary. Discuss the term teachers rule. What do teachers do in order to rule?
