1 Student Culture Super Lever Big Idea # 1 Define your student culture, or your student culture will define you. Session Objectives: Identify and apply the 4 keys to effective student culture. Design an explicit plan for strengthening student culture in our schools. Build the habits to lead a strong student culture. School Culture See it in ACTION! 3 Big Idea # 3 Eight Key Times That Define Great Student Culture: 1. Arrival & Breakfast 2. Morning Meeting/Circle 3. Whole-School Transitions (hallways between classes) 4. In-Class Routines (transitions, passing out materials, habits of discussion, etc.) 5. Lunch 6. Dismissal 7. Celebrating Learning 8. Discipline Referrals 3
4 STUDENT CULTURE HANDOUT PROCEDURE TEMPLATE WHOLE SCHOOL EXAMPLE AREA OF FOCUS: ARRIVAL Write a plan for your own system & be as detailed as possible (in the plan make sure you are including leader actions, student actions, and teacher actions) Prior to doors opening: 6:45am DOO puts out breakfast crates & computers for breakfast sign in SL does a walkthrough of the building making sure to stop by the teacher work room, copy room, and commons room (with flexi in hand to record anything that requires follow-up) Materials: Crates with breakfast already in them (pick up form walk in refrigerator), flexi and the breakfast computer stations 6:55am DOO reports to side door for morning arrival All lead teachers report to their breakfast tables Greet scholars as they arrive & make sure scholars pick up their breakfast All co-teachers report to their morning homework check in station o Prepare to greet students as they arrive o Prepare to collect homework Special teachers report to hallway to prepare to scan scholars for morning check in Materials: DOO clipboard to record any messages and collect any monies, bright work bins with bright work folders, empty homework crates and check in sheets for collection of homework and flexi (each teacher) Doors open: 7:00am DOO opens the door and DOO and SL begin go greet students and parents Ms. Graham puts on music (calming) and gets out materials for circle Materials: CD with calming music 4
5 Students Enter: 7:00am-scholars begin to arrive Scholars greet a SL by shaking their hand and saying good morning Scholars enter the building and walk down the steps (holding on to the railing) with lips zipped When scholars reach the bottom landing they are greeted by a special s teacher Scholars stop by the computer station to scan their hand for breakfast or keep going if they are not eating breakfast Scholars enter the commons room and go to their cubby Scholars greet co-teacher Scholars put their belongings in their cubby, submit homework binder, and put snack in yellow bin and lunch in red bin (if they brought their snack or lunch) Scholars then walk (in HALL position) to their table and greets the lead teacher Scholars sits down and begins to eat their breakfast (If they already ate they begin their morning bring work) Lead teachers are circulating, monitoring and interacting with students (low tone of voice) After eating breakfast the scholar gives the non-verbal signal (hand on top of head) to signal he/she is finished eating and ready for clean up Teacher will respond to the scholar by doing on of the following: o Go to the scholar and pick up the finished breakfast and throw it in the trash o Give the scholar a non-verbal signal (head nod) to throw the breakfast away o Assign student helpers (2) who circulate during breakfast and respond when they see the non-verbal cue signaling a scholar has finished their breakfast Materials: Yellow snack bins, red lunch bins, and pencils for morning bright work 7:25am- SL enters the building SL goes to the commons room in preparation for morning meeting 7:31 am- DOO puts out the late sign, closes the door, and reports to the commons room for morning Materials: Late sign stand 7:35 am- Ms. Graham gives the signal (clean up song) for teachers and scholars to begin final clean up and prepare for morning meeting or dismissal 5
6 7:40am- SL greets student body SL does the all school clap and scholars respond (if SL does not get 100% they do it again ) SL verbally greets the student body SL gives signal for scholars & teachers to begin transition for morning circle SL leads a mini morning meeting (on days when there is not a scheduled circle) Late Arrivals: Any scholar who arrives after 7:31 must report to the main office with an adult to be signed in Office Manager gives the scholar a pass and the scholar reports to the commons room (if it is prior to 8:00am) and to the classroom (if it is after 8:00am) All adults should use the most least invasive form of redirects Non-verbal redirects Use of proximity-stand beside or behind a student Modeling what to do (ex. STAR and HALL) Scholars who do not comply during arrival/breakfast: Step 1: Teacher goes through the normal set of non-compliance strategies (ex: give the direction again using a strong but low voice, provide students with a countdown to do what is asked, give a consequence-pull to the side for a discussion, send to another teacher, give a check or colored change) Step 2: Scholar is sent to the Dean of Students and the dean will do the follow up If the Dean of Students is out of the building the scholar goes to the Instructional Leader for that grade level 6
7 STUDENT CULTURE HANDOUT PROCEDURE TEMPLATE CLASSROOM EXAMPLE AREA OF FOCUS: ARRIVAL-GREETING/CLASSROOM Write a plan for your own system & be as detailed as possible (in the plan make sure you are including teacher actions and student actions) GREETING: SW line up in outside of the classroom along the wall and waited to be greeted by the teacher (teacher will position themselves so they can see the hall and be able to see inside the classroom) TW greet each student with a handshake, smile, and personal message (when necessary) while making eye contact. After handshake, SW will walk into the classroom and go directly to their seat o Take out textbook, notebook, and writing utensil o Put away all other materials (in desk or on back of chair)-no additional items may be placed on the desk Teacher will enter classroom, say good morning or good afternoon to the class, start the timer for the do-now and begin to circulate (teacher will use economy of language and positive tone) Materials needed: friendly smile, firm handshake, timer, and do-now s (already pre counted) placed at the front of the row If a student does not comply during the greeting the teacher can use one of the following options: Teacher will instruct student (in a calm and controlled tone) to go to the end of the line and try it again Teacher will say, try the greeting again and this time give me a firm handshake and speak so I can hear you. If a student does not comply during the do now the teacher can use one of the following options: Use proximity to get the student to do the work Give the student a non-verbal cue to begin to work Narrate the positive (a student who is on task and who is in close proximity to the student who is not fully on task) Give a class consequence (ex. lose a dollar-pay check system) 7
