13 KS3 Framework September 2017 Assessment without levels

14 We have created a new framework that: Is based on developing the key knowledge and skills required for success in KS4 Is based on our high expected standards of students Is based heavily on formative feedback and allows all students to succeed and so develops a growth mindset Incorporates periodic summative assessment to support this ongoing formative feedback Is simple and easy to understand for staff, parents and students Has consistent principles, to be used across subjects, but the flexibility to be suitable for all subjects

15 How is it different from Levels? Students are not given feedback such as you re a 4a but focused on formative feedback that makes students think about how to develop their understanding. How does it work? We used the KS2 levels on entry or current KS3 level to project a flight path (target grade range) to the new GCSE grades. The flight paths are a target for the students but also planning tool for teachers. Subjects have created a new framework to assess the students academic ability. This will be used to direct feedback for improvement.

16 The Framework Mastery - Demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of all concepts and core skill areas. Deepening - Has a secure understanding of the main concepts and skills when applied to familiar contexts. Progressing - Grasped most of the main concepts and skills in a unit of work. Emerging - Grasped some of the main ideas and skills in a unit of work, others require development. Beginning - Beginning to grasp some of the main ideas and skills in a unit of work.

19 Reporting Each strand is broken into sub bands Students can be towards to top, middle or lower end of each skill statement criteria. Based on the progress towards the skills statements you have created, each student will receive a progress statement. E.g. Jack is a Deepening student in your subject.

25 Developing Student Independence As we move toward GCSEs, it is crucial that we develop student independence. When they take their end of topics tests, end of Year 9 exams, GCSEs and A Levels, we want them to already have reviewed their learning and not be cramming. Cramming results in reduced long term knowledge retention whilst regularly reviewing your work means you retain it for longer. The result is better examination performance and less of a jump to the next year as learning from the previous year can be remembered and built upon. title name

26 Home Learning To begin on the first day of term Tuesday 5th September A key part of home learning is to develop independence and knowledge retention so that students are able to be academically successful. To do this, students need to produce a fortnightly review of what they have learned in each subject. This can be notes, a poster in their book, key words with definitions, diagrams, vocabulary lists etc. Whatever helps them to review the last 2 weeks work and interrupts forgetting before they move on. If home learning is not consistently set, please let us know. Two to four subjects per night therefore expect an hour and a half to two hours every day. This will include student s fortnightly reviews. title name

27 Literacy 60% of mistakes made in GCSE exams are the result of under developed literacy skills. Any reading; newspapers, journals, novels, film reviews, travel pieces. Contribute significantly to GCSE and A Level attainment through increased vocabulary and comprehension skills. Recommend reading 3 times a week for 30 mins title name

28 Attendance Research shows very close links between academic progress and attendance at school Where attendance falls below 96%, this can begin to have serious negative effects on progress Students will be rewarded an R4 100% attendance and are also rewarded as a form group for the highest attendance over a set time period Please remember that the school cannot authorise holidays or time off school except in exceptional circumstances
