4 Guidelines: Ethnography of Valentine s Day, portfolio due wk 9, March 3 rd General Overview: In this exercise you are an anthropologist trying to understand why, how and who celebrates Valentine s Day. 1) Research the history of Valentine s Day (5pts) CITATIONS REQUIRED; NOT WIKEPEDIA 2) Observe Valentine s Day displays at a local store and note how people interact with them (5pts) 3) Talk with several people and ask them about Valentine s Day and if/how they celebrate (this can be done with friends and family but should also include people you don t know) (5pts) 4) Conduct ONE semi-structured interview with a person from a culture outside of the U.S.(5pts) 5) Write a word paper on your findings (20pts) 6) In groups prepare a 5-6 minute classroom presentation on your findings using PowerPoint- please practice as we will maintain strict adherence to the timeframe(40pts) 1. RESEARCH THE HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CELEBRATION OF VALENTINE S DAY (5PTS) (Please use something other than Wikipedia- this is a general guideline, but be creative) 1. When, how, and where did Valentine s Day originate? 2. How is celebrated in contemporary American culture? 3. Who celebrates and how? 4. Who is excluded and why? 5. Are there any alternatives or subcultures? (If so, you can focus your research on the subculture) 2. STORE OBSERVATION: general guidelines but you can add more questions if you like (Please be respectful and do not approach people in the stores) 5PTS 1. Location: 2. Displays: How are the items displayed? Where are they in relation to the entrance? How much space do they consume in the store? Are they limited to a couple of isles or spread out? What types of signs or advertisements are present? What do they look like? What words are used? What colors? What symbols? 3. Gender: Who is shopping? Who are they with? What are they looking at specifically? What are their respective ages? What are they purchasing? What emotions are they displaying while they shop? 4 of 6

5 3. GENERAL QUESTIONNAIRE: (try to speak with somewhere between 5-7 people, use a separate notepad, you will be turning in your handwritten notes with this cover sheet) 5PTS 1. What are the origins of Valentine s Day? 2. What is the cultural meaning and/or significance of Valentine s Day in the modern era? 3. How is Valentine s Day celebrated in the U.S.? 4. Do you celebrate Valentine s Day? If so, how? If not, why not? 5. What are the cultural incentives and constraints to participating in Valentine s Day? Are there alternatives? 4. SEMI-STRUCTURED CULTURAL INTERVIEW (5PTS) Conduct an interview with ONE person from a culture of origin outside of the U.S. This can be a friend or you can contact the LBCC Albany Campus Diversity Center, or the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center to meet with someone. Set up an appointment in advance and be sure to arrive a few minutes early and thank your informant for agreeing to meet with you. 1. First Name (only) of Interviewee: 2. Cultural Origin: 3. Do you participate in Valentine s Day celebrations in the U.S.? If so, how? If not, why not? 7. Do you have a similar holiday in your culture of origin? (If they do not know about Valentine s Day you may need to explain the meaning based on the questionnaires you previously conducted) 7a. If so, what is the name of the holiday? 7b. When is it celebrated? 7c. Who participates and who doesn t and why? 5) WRITE A WORD PAPER ON YOUR FINDINGS (20PTS) Your paper must include all aspects of your research woven together in an interesting format. Be sure to include a comparison of your research findings in the Willamette Valley with the semi-structured cultural interview. Spelling, grammar and organization of your material all count towards your grade. Format: Times New Roman, 11pt font, 1 ½ line-spacing (approximately 2pgs) 5 of 6

6 6) IN GROUPS, PREPARE A 5-7 MINUTE CLASSROOM PRESENTATION ON YOUR FINDINGS USING POWERPOINT- please practice as we will maintain strict adherence to the timeframe (40pts) Students will be assigned to groups of 3-4 students. Presentations should include components of each student s individual research as well as a synthesis and analysis of the combined data. Slides should include: 1 slide- Title Page w student Names, 2-3 slides - Research Data, 2 slides - Analysis, 1 slide -Bibliography of Research Citations properly citied. For cultural interviews please use the following format (e.g. Mathma, Personal Communication, LBCC Multicultural Literacy Center, 10 Feb 2015). Do not exceed 7 slides or you will not have time to finish your presentation within the time allotted. You will be graded on the organization, content, cohesion, clarity and creativity of your presentation. Be sure to engage with the audience: reading strictly from notecards or the screen will result in a deduction of points. This means practice, practice, practice (at least twice). 6 of 6
