This handson workshop takes you beyond the basics and shows you the advanced capabilities of Illustrator using techniques for creating stunning images. Adobe Illustrator Essentials Adobe Photoshop Advanced Illustrator Essentials is for those with little or no experience in Illustrator, or those who have a basic knowledge of the program. We start with the absolute essentials! Photoshop Advanced is for those who have experience using Adobe Photoshop. You will learn to apply dynamic effects to your images. Advanced EndNote For current EndNote users. Learn how to organize your library with Smart Groups, search and import references from within EndNote, edit bibliographic citation styles, and use advanced Cite While You Write features. ArcGIS Introduction Learn the basic tools of creating a map with ArcGIS. Visualizing and managing geographic data is possible with just a few clicks of the mouse. Avoiding Plagiarism: Tips and Strategies for Graduate Students This workshop will define and discuss plagiarism. The session will include strategies and research best practices for avoiding plagiarism in your scholarly writing. A Survival Skills for Graduate Students workshop. Branching Out: Starting a Family Tree with Ancestry.com Conference Poster Design: Adobe InDesign Conference Poster Design: Using Microsoft Publisher Learn the basics of using Ancestry.com, including starting your own tree, taking advantage of the library s subscription to Ancestry s worldwide databases, and employing search strategies to get the best results. This online class will get you through start to finish with the skills you need to create a professional conference poster using Adobe InDesign. Crafting the Winning Curriculum Vitae Online Workshop The curriculum vitae (CV) is the document most often used during the academic job search and throughout an academic career. Demystifying the Dissertation Process Developing a Literature Review: An Overview for Graduate Students ETD Formatting Questions and Answers Session From proposal to defense, this workshop provides strategies for starting and completing your thesis or dissertation. A Survival Skills for Graduate Students workshop. In this workshop, we ll cover the basics of how to structure and write a literature review, with a focus on the thesis or dissertation review. A Survival Skills for Graduate Students workshop. This informal workshop is designed to assist students who are in the process of formatting their papers using the templates. An instructor will be on hand as you work on your paper to provide answers to questions and help when needed with the formatting. Bring your document on a flash drive and stay as little or as long as you need to. Excel Charts Excel Essentials Finding Data using ICPSR Finding Safe Harbor: Strategies for Graduate Student Success Getting Started with 3D Printing Google Maps This workshop will show you how to turn your excel data into professional charts. This workshop is an introduction to the basic applications of Excel. In this workshop, we will expose you to spreadsheets, workbooks, cells, columns, rows, formatting cells and simple calculations. If you are a beginner to Excel this workshop is perfect for you! ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research) stores, curates, maintains and provides access to a data archive of more than 250,000 files of research in the social and behavioral sciences. This workshop will provide a brief introduction to what kind of data sets ICPSR has and how they can be accessed and used. Three workshops offered to graduate students, all in one morning. Launching Your Academic Publishing Career (Deborah Lee;) Navigating the ETD Submission Process (Jenifer Hoffman); Avoiding Contract Sharks (Claudia Holland). Visit website for full description. Come learn how to find, design, and print 3D objects. This workshop will cover the software available, some guides on how to get started, and how the MakerBot Replicator 2 makes your designs reality. This workshop is an introduction to the basic functions of Google Maps. You will learn how to create your own maps with photos and links, use tabular data to plot points, and share your maps with others. Google SketchUp: An Introduction Google SketchUp is a powerful yet user-friendly 3D modeling program. Come see what makes this program ideal for novice 3D designers and how you can even create a 3D model for printing!

4 InDesign Essentials Learn to use the basics of Adobe InDesign to create documents that require precise layout and creative control, such as handouts, newsletters, posters, brochures, manuscripts or books. You will learn basics such as inserting text, adding pictures; also how to add new pages, new color swatches and formatting. Introduction to EndNote For new and potential users. Learn the basics of EndNote, including how to create your own personal research library, import references and full text PDFs from databases, and add in-text citations and bibliographies to your Word documents with Cite While You Write. Introduction to Genealogy in Special Collections Learn the basics of using archival materials for genealogical research, and the sources available to researchers in Special Collections, including microfilm, manuscript collections, books, maps, and periodicals. Location: Special Collections, 3rd Floor, Mitchell Memorial Library Introduction to Mendeley Introduction to Zotero Keeping It Honest: Avoiding Plagiarism in Your Papers Mendeley is a citation manager created to integrate seamlessly with Scopus and ScienceDirect, though it works with other databases as well. MSU students, faculty, and staff now have access to Mendeley Institutional Edition. Learn how to build a searchable database for your references, and then how to use the plug-in to cite as you write. Zotero is a free cloud-based citation management system that captures journal articles, books, webpages, and newspaper articles, to seamlessly save them for citations and bibliographies. It comes with a MS Word plug-in to easily manage citations while writing. Plagiarism is a major problem in academic circles and goes far beyond simple copy and paste. This workshop offers practical steps, from beginning your research to finalizing your citations and reference page, to keep your papers plagiarism-free! **NOTE: This workshop does not count towards the Academic Integrity Intervention Program.** Microsoft Excel Formulas Microsoft Mail Merge Mania Microsoft OneNote Essentials This workshop will show you the most commonly used Microsoft Excel formulas and their function. This workshop will help you simplify the mania of mail merge. You will learn how to use Microsoft Word and Excel in conjunction, to create the perfect merge document. You will learn to set up data correctly in Excel, enabling you to seamlessly merge letters, labels, envelops or any other merge correspondence into a Word document. Merge items to cover will be envelops, labels, letters, and merge. Learn how to use Microsoft OneNote, a computer program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users notes (handwritten or typed), drawings, screen clippings and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network.

5 Photoshop Essentials This workshop is for beginners who have never used Photoshop. In the workshop you will learn basic adjustments, how to make edits and retouches (such as editing facial blemishes, and removing unwanted objects from the background). Students will also learn how to make selections from their photos, work with layers, and make duplicate layers. Power Up Your Research Productivity with Scopus - Online Workshop This workshop provides an introduction to the powerful research database Scopus. Strategies for customizing search results and evaluating research will be included in the session. A Practical Professor workshop. PowerPoint Essentials Presentation Development & Delivery This workshop introduces how to create a presentation using PowerPoint. You will learn how to insert slides, apply transitions, and animations. You will also learn how to insert images, charts, music, video files and YouTube videos. In this workshop, you will learn how to develop and deliver a professional presentation no matter what presentation software you choose. You will learn the do s and don ts of design and how to present yourself as a professional. Professional Office Documents This workshop teaches you how to create professional documents with ease, using Microsoft Office. You will learn how to set up documents correctly to produce memorandums, business letters, business reports, programs for conferences, and financial documents. Publisher for Professionals Publishing 101: Navigating the Academic Publishing Process Searching PubMed Efficiently Teaching with Primary Sources: African American History Teaching with Primary Sources: Art, Architecture, and Design Teaching with Primary Sources: Science, Technology, Medicine, and Agriculture Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing program users can use this copy and layout program to design programs, posters, banners, brochures, flyers or business cards. This workshop provides an introduction to the academic publishing process. Topics covered include journal selection, submission strategies, managing the relationship with editors and reviewers, and publishing best practices. A Survival Skills for Graduate Students/Practical Professor workshop. PubMed, a database produced by the National Library of Medicine, is a comprehensive resource for searching the scientific literature, particularly related to life sciences. In this one-hour workshop, you will learn the essentials about PubMed and the techniques of conducting more effective searches using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Materials used in the workshop will be drawn from the University Archives, Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Mississippiana Divisions of Special Collections. The Power of PowerPoint Thesis and Dissertation Formatting Tools for Creating and Design Infographics for Proposals Tools and Strategies for Critically Evaluating Fake News In this workshop you will learn how powerful Microsoft PowerPoint can be in catapulting your professional career. Incorporating good design elements, audio, and video, using professional images and animation will make your presentation be a standout. This workshop covers the submission process for format review and demonstrates how to use the automated templates to format MSU theses and dissertations to the requirements set forth in the standards for preparing theses and dissertations: 6th edition. In this session you will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator, a vector graphics program, to create impressive and easy to follow info-graphics. Advantages to using info-graphics in a proposal are the icons, charts, images, illustrations and data visualizations are seen as separate objects and make telling your story simple and easy to follow visually. You will be able to create & display enormous amounts of content and easily condense it visually. This workshop aims to equip participants with tools to recognize, avoid, and combat misinformation, including fake news, false news, media bias, and confirmation bias. Using American Psychological Association (APA) Citation Style Learn the ins and outs of citing sources and building reference lists using the 6th edition of the APA Style Guide. Using Research Metrics to Tell Your Story Video Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro You re Publishing Where?: How to Identify Questionable Digital Journals How do you use research and bibliometric measures to convey the impact of your research? This online session will discuss some of the common measures available and provide an overview of locally available tools. In this workshop you will learn the essentials of how to edit video clips using Adobe Premiere Pro. This timeline-based video editing software makes it easy to edit clips, add transitions, and overlay text to create a professional-level video. Learn how to distinguish reputable, quality journal titles from those whose publishers are simply in it to make money. Vetting titles is an important step toward ensuring you get the most exposure for your scholarship and that it is being preserved for the long term. Examples of titles or journal solicitations from the audience are encouraged.
