1 Short Story Unit Intro Notes Day
2 Warm-Up - 10/16/17 The striatum, the key part of the brain for decision making, is divided into three parts. These parts control 1. Motivation, 2. Adaptive Decisions, and 3. Routine Actions. These three parts and three considerations work together to help you make decisions. How are you with decision making? Are you a quick judge? Or do you take your time? When deciding what you want to eat or what movie to watch, are you the first person or the last person to voice an opinion?
3 Reading Day (Day 1 of 2)
4 Warm-Up 10/17/17 Are humans naturally good or naturally bad? What do you think? What causes people to be bad? Or leads them to making harmful choices? What inspires people to be good?
5 Note-Taking Why it s important: Keep track of images, characteristics, and questions while you read. Goal to recognize how stories combo different elements. Use these to put together the summative packet, showing what you learned. How to take notes: Notebooks or Sticky Notes You ll read from class sets or library books, so you can t write directly on the stories.
6 Plan for the day: Start with the Poe story Take notes while you read (sticky notes or notebook) Look up unfamiliar words Focus on: Romantic, Gothic, & symbols Remember you must be ready to discuss on the assigned day (notes will receive a grade)

8 Warm-Up - 10/18/17 Pick any word from the story you ve read so far. Write down the definition Fit the context of how it s used in the story. Include on your Warm-Up sheet & in your story notes
9 When Finalizing your Essays: Top priority: Are your ideas clear? Check that you ve fulfilled the requirements Focus on clearly explaining the connections between ideas If possible, have someone else look over your paper Try reading your paper out loud to yourself. This can help you catch weird phrasing, repeated words, and other issues. Then the finishing touches Spell-check, typos, and formatting Use the back of the Tips sheet to help you
10 One Method for Editing Underline or highlight: Color 1 thesis in the intro and restated thesis in the conclusion Color 2 every Self-Reliance quote Color 3 every Divergent or Ender s Game quote Color 4 explanation (not summary) following the quote Color 5 background information in the intro or before a quote Color 6 circle any time you see you, I, or me If any piece is missing, go back and add it.

Then look for correct punctuation AND verb tense.
