1 COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2017 BUSTEC 333 Exploring Word Processing and Presentation Software Class Number /19 10/11 ONLINE Instructor: Felicia Heiler Online Office Hours: Wednesdays, 7:00 8:00 p.m. Catalog Description: Prerequisite: Advisory: Credit: Hours: Student Learning Objectives: Textbooks: Supplies: Communication: This course introduces the student to word processing and presentation software. The basic features and skills of creating, editing, formatting, inserting tables and graphics, and enhancing word-processed documents and graphic presentations are covered. Students should have access to a computer, the Internet, and some computer media such as a USB drive to store data files. Students must have an active Los Rios account. This course is not open to students who have completed CISA 308. None. BUSTEC (Intro Keyboarding/Application) and CISC 300 (Computer Familiarization) 1 unit 18 hours lecture, 18 hours laboratory, 36 hours out-of-class work Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following: utilize efficient techniques in creating and formatting typical business documents. analyze document requirements and use appropriate features when creating business documents that require the integration of text, charts, and/or graphics for distribution or presentation. manipulate data by using various features such as cut, copy, paste, and sort. format documents using basic editing features such as setting margins, inserting headers and footers and choosing page orientation in addition to applying attributes that adjust the style, size, and appearance of characters. convert text, table, and chart data between applications. evaluate and analyze appropriate layout and design of documents for specific audiences. All computers on campus have USB ports for flash drives. is the primary form of communication for this class. It is the student s responsibility to monitor their Los Rios Gmail account or to keep their Gmail forwarding address current.

2 Organization: Grading: The topics for this online course are presented in PowerPoint slides which can be found in the Chapter Notes folder in the Files section of Canvas. These slides highlight the important concepts from the textbooks. The step-by-step hands-on exercises demonstrate the concepts and you will learn many Word and PowerPoint skills. Every week, you will turn in assignments in Canvas. You can work as far ahead as you like, but I might not get your assignments graded until the due date. There are 500 points possible. The points break down as follows: MS Word / 10 pts each MS PowerPoint / 10 pts each Final Exam Final grade will be based on a scale of 90+% = A, 80% = B, 70% = C, 60% = D, 59-% = F. Dropping a Class: Data Files: Each student who is unable to complete this class must process the appropriate paperwork with the Admissions Office to drop the class. Failure to do so will result in a final grade of F. There are two ways to access the data files: (1) download the data files from my web page (2) download the data files from the Files section in Canvas. Completing the Exercises: You should complete all required assignments according to the specifications within the text. No coversheets are required as no printing is to be done. Unit Assignments: Exercise Evaluation: The completed exercises should be uploaded to Canvas. Please note, there is a due date for each unit. Pay attention to the End Dates for the each assignment. When the End Date has been reached, you will not be able to submit assignments through Canvas. Within 5 days of submitting your assignments, I will enter your scores in Canvas. If you turn in assignments early, you will have the opportunity to resubmit corrected exercises without penalty. (This opportunity does not apply to students who wait until the last couple of days of class to turn in work.) Cruise through each unit. Do not attempt to simply do the required exercises without first reading the units and doing all of the hands-on lessons. Turn in only the required exercises, one unit at a time. I do not need extra files. Peruse the Unit Objectives at the beginning of every unit. Study/work through the concepts. Note the Learning Outcomes box that states the learning goals for the lesson. Complete the hands-on lessons as you read through the unit. Self test on the Concepts Review (screen identification, matching, and multiple-choice exercises). Do the Skills Review and Independent Challenge exercises at the end of the unit. Send to me the completed exercises as shown in the table below. If you are using Word 2016 and PowePoint 2016 to do your assignments, there will be some clipart, theme colors or fonts that are not available but referenced in the book. I am not overly concerned about exact clipart, fonts, or themed colors so there is some leeway in formatting. Just make mention of which software version you used when you submit the files in Canvas. Exercises are evaluated using one or more of the following criteria: Are text entered and formatted as required? Are text selected, replaced, rearranged, or deleted as instructed? Are borders in the correct place? Are the placeholder texts replaced as required? Are paragraphs formatted as instructed? BUSTEC 333, Fall /11/2017

3 Are the document size, margins, headers, footers, page numbers, and other properties set as instructed? Are section breaks and page breaks used appropriately? Does the title slide contain presentation title and subtitle lines as instructed? Final Exam: Student Rights and Responsibilities: Do the slides contain the title and context text with indents as required? Is a theme applied to slides as instructed? Are content of additional slides of appropriate to scenario added at student discretion? Is SmartArt used as instructed? The Final Exam will be posted in Canvas for this course. It is a 100 question, three-hour time limit exam that covers eight units: four from Word and four from PowerPoint. Please refer to pages in the College Catalog (on the college website and Insider) for the policies that will govern this class. Support Services: There are support services such as tutoring available to students. Click on the Student Services link on the college website ( for more information. SLO Measurement: FLC would like to measure our student success rates against the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) standard. The Initial Contact Form that you must submit before the start of class contains a short survey on your prior knowledge at the beginning of the semester.
