1 Entering course requests online in X2 Aspen for grade 8 students at Diamond Middle School who will attend Lexington High School in Lexington High School is using an online process for you to request elective courses to complete your 9th grade schedule. You will have the opportunity to go online during school, but you will need to plan ahead by discussing with your family which elective courses you want to take. Here s an outline of the steps you must take: 1. Before Monday, March 3: In consultation with your family, using the LHS Course Catalogue, decide which elective and Physical Education courses you want to take. Record them in the worksheet on page Between Tuesday, March 4 th and Wednesday, March 12th, enter your elective choices in X2 Aspen. The deadline for changes is the end of March Optionally, write an online note to your counselor to specify alternate course choices and/or to explain your course choices, as needed. Below are instructions for each step, and there are further instructions online in X2 Aspen. If you have any questions about course selection that are not answered by the instructions, contact your guidance counselor. If you have trouble accessing or using your X2 Aspen student account, studentportal@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us for help. Step 1: Deciding your elective course choices The Lexington High School Course Catalogue, available as a PDF document linked from on the About Our School menu, lists the courses you can choose to complete your schedule. Consulting with your family, choose courses that will fulfill LHS graduation requirements and your personal goals, while maintaining a reasonably balanced life. Record the choices you make in the course selection worksheet on page 2. There are two kinds of choices you need to make: Elective courses: Choose enough elective courses so that you have a complete course load. For most grade 9 students, a complete course load is between 28 and 31 credits, with 28 credits recommended. You can use the worksheet on page 2 to add up your course credits including the electives you ve chosen. Physical Education courses: You must choose a Physical Education activity for each of the four quarters of the year. The choices for each quarter are listed on page 6. Make sure you choose one course from Quarter 1 (course numbers 71##), one from Quarter 2 (72##), one from Quarter 3 (73##), and one from Quarter 4 (74##).

3 Entering course requests online page 3 Step 2: Entering your elective choices in X2 Aspen Using a web browser (current version of Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer recommended), go to and log into your student account. Use the same login as for viewing your own report card. Make sure you are using a student account (Login ID beginning with stu) not a parent/family account (Login ID beginning with fam). If you do not know your login ID and password, or have trouble logging into your account, studentportal@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us for help. Once logged in, click on the My Info top tab, then on the Requests side tab. On this page you ll see a display of your recommended courses similar to the example shown below. (If you have any questions about a recommended course or level, consult your current teacher who made the recommendation. If you want to take a course at a higher level than recommended, you will need to complete a Placement Review Form and submit it to the appropriate LHS department office by March 14. If you want to take a course at a lower level than recommended, or not take a recommended course at all, say so in a note to your counselor see Step 3 of the instructions.)

4 Entering course requests online page 4 Now, for each subject area where you need to enter one or more elective courses, click the Select button. You will see a list of courses that you may select in that subject area. If there are more than ten such courses, you will need to use the and buttons to page through the available choices. Select the checkbox next to any course(s) you wish to choose, then click the OK button. See below for an example of selecting the course 6710 Mixed Chorus. After you click the OK button, you will be returned to the main course selection screen and should see the course(s) you just selected added to your list. Now proceed similarly through the other subject areas. Certain elective courses are listed under the subject area Other Courses instead of under their academic department area. Be sure to click on the Select button for Other Courses to find any courses not shown under their department. If you are still unable to find a course you wish to select, see Step 3 of the instructions. For Physical Education, click the Select button and choose 4 quarter-courses. You ll see further instructions on-screen after clicking the Select button. When you are done choosing courses, click the button to submit your requests. If you have anything to explain about your requests or wish to specify alternate course choices, proceed to Step 3. If you get an error message when you post, try to resolve the error yourself and post again. If you cannot, proceed to Step 3 and write an explanation.

5 Entering course requests online page 5 Step 3: Writing a counselor note (explanations, alternates) At the bottom of the course request screen, there is a box where you can write a note that your guidance counselor will review while processing your course requests. When done, be sure to click to submit your note. Please fill in this box for any of the purposes listed below. You may wish to specify alternate course choices (choices that will be used only if one of your elective courses cannot be scheduled). To do so, in the Notes box, write the word Alternate followed by the course numbers and titles. You may specify one or two courses as alternates. You may need to request a course that you couldn t find listed under any of the subject areas. This might happen if you want a course that is unusual for students in your grade. In the Notes box, list the course number and title, and tell why you are requesting the course. You may wish to change level or drop a recommended course. Explain the change you want to make in the Notes box. If you want to move to a higher level in the course, filling in the Notes box is not sufficient. You must also complete a Placement Review Form and submit it to the appropriate department office at LHS by March 14. You may need to explain why you could not resolve an error when posting your requests. For example, you might need to explain why you are requesting a total number of credits that is outside the normal range of 28 to 31 credits. There may be something else you need to explain about your course requests. If your explanation is complicated or personal in nature, you should also follow-up by having an in-person conversation with your guidance counselor. Step 4: Making changes You can log into X2 Aspen again if you wish to change your elective course requests. The deadline for changing your requests is the end of March 12. Need help?
