1 2 nd Year Study Skills Evening

2 (1)New Maths Course New course was introduced nationally for incoming first year and fifth year students in September Maths syllabus is introduced by strand: 1. Statistics and Probability 2. Geometry and Trigonometry 3. Number 4. Algebra 5. Functions

3 New paper layout Up to 15 questions on paper one. Up to 17 questions on paper two. All questions to be completed. Time guide for each question. Both papers are now much less predictable. Not as easy to know how questions will be asked/phrased/worded.

4 (2) Second Year Maths Groups streamed into four HL groups and one small OL group. Common worksheets, class tests, assessment exams and summer exam. HL Textbook-Active Maths 2. OL Textbook-Active Maths 1.

5 (3) Student s General Goals Right attitude & Maximize potential. - No such thing as a bad Maths student. - Self-fulfilling prophecy. - Praise and making Maths fun is important. Understanding is essential. - Key skills and principles important, particularly when it comes to the Leaving Cert. - What to do with unfamiliar questions. - Justify and explain answers.

6 (3) Student s General Goals Talk Mathematics in school, on the bus, at home etc. - Discussions with peers. - Healthy competition can be a good thing. Correct preparation and time management. - Correct materials for class. - Sufficient time spent on homework.

7 (4) Classroom objectives Concentration is crucial. - Otherwise, potential issues with homework. If students don t understand, ask questions. -Ask at the start, during, the end or outside of the class. Label the notes, focus on keeping them neat and file them (This includes past exams). - Important to be able to keep track of notes, especially for the summer exam and Junior Cert.

12 (5) Homework routine Practise, practise, practise! - Understanding is important but key ingredients to success are hard work and perseverance. Minimum of minutes every evening. Homework process (Check answers). Any support at home is helpful.

13 (6) Revision Schedule Revision timetable is important leading up to assessments and the other big exams (For all subjects) minutes per session (No more). Select the topic, focus on the key areas and practice key questions from a selection of sources (Textbooks, worksheets and online resources). Final part: revise in an exam environment and ask teacher to look over covered material.

14 (7) Revision/Exam tips Read and re-read the question. - Understand the operative verbs in the questions e.g. Construct, Graph, Solve, Prove, Verify, Justify, Explain. Positive approach to problematic areas/questions. Find complex questions. Make a note of questions not solved during the week (Try them again on Saturday/Sunday and then see the teacher). Always make an attempt and show full workings (Attempt marks are important!!).

Very useful for Co-ordinate Geometry of the Line topic. Mathematics Applications from the Apple Store.

17 (8)What s in it for the students? 1. Applying their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve familiar and unfamiliar problems in the exam situation question(quite familiar to students) Question 7 (b) Factorise fully ac ad bd+ bc. NB: Unpredictable questions.

19 (8)What s in it for the students? 2. Students see how mathematics relates to their current daily life and to develop key skills for the future. For example, learning about the income tax system. 3. Linked to their other subjects. For example, topics are linked to Business Studies, Geography, Science and Technical Graphics. 4. Enjoyment of the subject, which could lead to Mathematics being studied in third level. 5. Bonus pointsfor the Leaving Certificate (Hard work is essential).
