2 Fourth Grade Summer Writing Project During the summer, many families share special experiences together. For example, you may choose to go on vacation, to the beach, to a museum, to a landmark, or even a park. Write a personal narrative describing your adventure there. Draw a picture or take a photograph to share with your new class! Be sure to include: An interesting lead Who was there Setting description Events written in paragraphs Sequence words (next, after, finally...) Your thoughts and actions Dialogue A conclusion

5 Dear Students, Welcome to the summer math performance task! This activity is meant to support instruction for students completing 3rd grade going into 4th grade. Parents: One of the most important things your child can do over the summer to help with his/her math skills is to practice multiplication and division facts. Just a few minutes a day, a couple of days a week will make a big difference. Problem solving with real-world math Math has evolved from the computation we most likely experienced in math class to an emphasis on problem solving. Computation is still important, but it is used to solve real- life problems. The emphasis is generally on math processes that enable your child to learn multiple strategies to become a proficient problem solver. Model the importance of math in the real world and encourage your child to help when you: Balance your checkbook Pay bills Estimate the cost of the groceries in your cart Determine how much food to buy or make for a party Double a recipe or cut a recipe in half Figure the cost of lunch at a restaurant Calculate the cost of school lunch for the week or month Determine how long your child will need to save his allowance to buy a particular item Determine the number of miles driven in X hours Determine how long it will take to drive home going X mph Figure the cost of X number of minutes of cell phone use if you pay X cents/minutes Determine how many gallons of gas you can buy with X dollars Determine how many chocolate chips are needed if X number of cookies each has 3 chocolate chips Games that build number sense Play games with your child to reinforce number sense. Try Racko by Hasbro. This game involves putting numbered cards in order from greatest to least. Yahtzee is perfect for working on multiplication facts and reinforcing addition skills. There are many fun card and dice games that utilize math skills. Practice multiplication facts Your child is expected to know multiplication facts. Have your child bounce a basketball as he says the multiples of different numbers. For example, he can practice the multiples of 9 for each bounce

6 9, 18, 27, 36. Then he can say them backward: 81, 72, 63, 54. Research shows that kinesthetic movement helps the brain learn facts Following are some math websites for summer practice: TOP 10 MATH WEBSITES 1. Includes a magic chalkboard and an art gallery This South African Community website for teachers, parents and students is complete with lessons, tests, exams, worksheets, study skills and much more This lively, interactive Web site, based on the popular BBC Schools Television series Megamaths, is for practicing and testing times tables The Math League, designed for students in fourth grade through high school, specializes in math contests, books and computer software. The Help Facility is handy reference guide for math topics complete with examples, definitions and explanations FleetKids games teach elementary children several different aspect of money management. Games include Windfall, where a child can run an imaginary business and BuyLo/SellHi, where children can play the stock market. Students can sign up as an individual or as part of an elementary school team This site includes 17 original games based on soccer, car racing and much more Other games include Math Baseball, where a child can score runs with correct answers and Operation Order, where students can build pyramids with their knowledge of algebra.

11 Summer Reading Project Choose a fiction book on your reading level. Read the entire text and choose one of the following projects: *Create a poster summarizing your text. Be sure to include a section for each of the following: character description, setting, problem, events, solution, and theme. *Create a poster advertising your book. Remember, you want to convince people to buy this book. Include strong descriptive words as well as a review of at least 3 reasons why we should read the book. *Create a timeline of events in your text on a poster. Be sure to include at least 8 important events in the text, ending with the solution!
