It examines the variety of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments built into the program, learn how to use assessment data to inform instruction, and discover how the assessments help prepare students for high-stakes Common Core tests. 2 Diagnostic Assessments Assessment support starts at the beginning of the year with diagnostic assessments. The Placement Test, available in print or online, checks your students' mastery of standards from the previous year. Items on the Placement Test correlate to the previous grade's standards. Have your students take the online Placement Test through Pearson Realize to automatically score their results. Then view reports online and use the data to identify standards that need review. Begin each topic with Review What You Know, a short assessment included in the student edition. These questions will activate and assess the prior knowledge that students will need in the upcoming topic. 3 Math Diagnosis and Intervention System 2.0 Use the Math Diagnosis and Intervention System or MDIS 2.0 to identify and diagnose students' misconceptions and assign appropriate intervention on or below grade level. Throughout the year, use the Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention alongside formal assessments to help you identify the standards students haven't mastered yet and choose appropriate interventions. Use the provided lessons to supplement your own teaching or as stand-alone intervention. The MDIS 2.0 is available in print and online as a PDF through Pearson Realize. 4 Formative Assessments Closely monitor your students' progress throughout every lesson with a variety of formative assessments. Find suggested questions that you can ask during Problem-Based Learning and with the Visual Learning Bridge in your Teacher's Edition. Question your students to check for understanding and to guide your instructional decisions. Also use the provided examples of students' work so you know what to watch for and when to intervene. Check for understanding right after the instruction in the Show Me (for Grades K 2) or Convince Me (for Grades 3 6) section. Have your students complete the Do You Understand questions in Guided Practice. Question them to verify comprehension directly after the instruction. 5 Ongoing Assessment Ongoing assessment continues throughout the lesson, allowing you to prescribe appropriate instruction. Observe your students as they complete the Guided Practice section in their student editions or ACTIVe-books. Find error intervention tips in the Teacher's Edition to provide focused remediation. Assign Reteaching Sets when necessary. Use your students' work from the Independent Practice and Math Practices and Problem Solving sections to prescribe differentiated instruction. These exercises also provide opportunities for your students to engage in specific math practices as they solve a variety of problems in performance-based assessments. The three Quick Check exercises, indicated by check marks in the Teacher's Edition, allow you to quickly assess your students' progress. Provide targeted instruction based on their performance on the Quick Check exercises by using these resources: Intervention Activities Reteaching pages On-Level and Advanced Activity Centers, and Leveled homework assignments When students complete the Quick Check exercises online, the program automatically assigns Homework and Practice. 6 Practice Buddy, powered by MathXL for School, provides on-level content practice for Grades 3 6. These online exercises have built-in learning aides via a drop-down menu to help provide support. Students can select the type of support they need, including the following: Help Me Solve This View an Example Another Look videos Visual Learning animations Adaptive Homework and Practice Powered by Knewton provides support for students in Grades 3 5 for the Homework and Practice part of each lesson. Knewton gathers student performance information from the online assessments, Quick Checks, and Practice Tasks and uses that information to intelligently prescribe tasks and content to meet the individual learning needs of each student. 7 Common Core Assessment Practice Every lesson includes Common Core assessment practice items in specialized formats to help students prepare for high-stakes Common Core tests. A variety of print and digital resources are provided to ensure your students' success on Common Core fluency standards, including practice and assessment masters and online practice activities. 10 Cumulative/Benchmark Assessments Give the Cumulative/Benchmark Assessment at the end of every four topics. Use this information to determine whether students have mastered the content taught in the last four topics or require additional instruction. Analyze students' responses with the Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention to identify appropriate intervention lessons. Find an online version of this test-with automatic scoring-on Pearson Realize. You can use the results from the online Topic Assessment and Cumulative/Benchmark Assessment to provide differentiation after a topic or group of topics.
