1 1 Course Syllabus Class Days: Class Periods: Instructor: Claudia Simpkins Conference: 5 th and 8 th Period clking@dallasisd.org Course Description: provides students an opportunity to synthesize the skills and knowledge they have acquired up to this point in their educations. They will become actively involved in planning and performing service learning projects; researching and preparing, investigating and drafting proposals to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world. Students will become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform. Students will learn firsthand about the work of various career fields, and develop critical thinking and public speaking skills by acting as attorneys and witnesses in a Mock Trial. Students will make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, and negotiate with allies and adversaries, and work to resolve conflicts. The goal of Senior Seminar is to immerse students in real-life learning experiences. CCRS Course Standards: 1. Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career/college decisions. 2. Students will employ strategies to achieve future career/college goals with success and satisfaction. 3. Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training, personal financial literacy and the world of work. 4. Students will create and manage a life plan.

2 2 Student Expectations: Attend and Participate in All Sessions Complete All Session Assignments and Homework Conduct Research, Project and Volunteer Hours (4) Prepare for Entry-level Career or College/University Explore Career Development and Collaboration Develop Higher Order Thinking Skills Build Leadership Skills Demonstrate Character Education and Ethics Use Technology Use ConnectEdu and create an e-portfolio Complete ICP (Individual Career Plan) Course Policies: Attendance: Be in class on time and in dress code Conduct: Follow class and school policies Participation: Participate daily in class Team Player: Contribute to group work and be cooperative Leadership: Demonstrate leadership traits Citizenship: Know rights and responsibilities of yourself and others Assignments: Complete all assignments according to instruction and due dates Missed assignments: Refer to syllabus, classmates, assignment calendar, and teacher Late work: One letter grade deduction per day Extra credit: As assigned Texts/Resources/Readings Online and Hard Copy Resources, Library and Others Supplies: 1. Blue or black pens 2. Composition book 3. Jump drive/ Flash drive (optional)

3 3 Study Tips/Learning Resources: A student will be successful by attending class regularly, completing all classwork/homework/projects assignments as instructed, seeking additional help when needed and utilizing the vast self-improvement Internet resources provided by the teacher. Grading, Evaluation Policies and Procedures: Grading Daily grades such as class work, homework, and quizzes make up 50% of your total grade; major grades such as unit tests, compositions, oral presentations and other projects also account for 50% of your total grade. Assignments All homework assignments will be turned in at the beginning of the period. Late assignments will be deducted 10 points for each day it is late. After two meeting days the work will not be accepted. as stated in Student Handbook Makeup Work Daily work-when you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the make-up work the day you return. Students have one day for makeup for each day absence. (Example: one day absent = one day for makeup, three days absent = 3 days for makeup) Tests-If you are in class the day a test is announced, but absent when it is given, you will take the test on the day you return. Attendance/Tardy Policy School attendance is essential for the student to make the most of his/her education- to benefit from teacher led activities, to build each day s learning on that of the previous day, and to grow as an individual. A student is tardy if not in class at the designated time class is scheduled to begin. when the tardy bell rings. Students will serve lunch detention for every three tardies. If a student is 15 minutes late for class, he or she is considered absent for that day.
