1 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FORUM Cornerstone Church Bythel Hagee Life Center Stone Oak Pkwy San Antonio, Texas SESSION DESCRIPTIONS Dr. Glen Schultz, Special Guest Speaker BIOGRAPHY Dr. Schultz has given his life to educating future generations according to God s plan for the past 46 years. He began his involvement in education as a chemistry teacher and coach at Gowanda Central School in New York. After 5 years of teaching in public school, Glen entered the field of Christian school education, where he has served the Lord ever since. He has been a teacher, coach, high school principal and superintendent during his tenure in Christian schools. Dr. Schultz just completed 9 years as an associate pastor at Sherwood Baptist Church and Headmaster of Sherwood Christian Academy. Prior to this, Glen directed the Christian school work at LifeWay Christian Resources for 9 years. He also served as the Association of Christian Schools International Southeast Regional Director for 7 years. Glen is the author of Kingdom Education: God s Plan for Educating Future Generations and several parenting booklets including A Parent s Greatest Joy, Home Invasion, Shepherding and 20/20 Vision. He has conducted seminars throughout the United States and several foreign countries. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Schultz is the founder and director of Kingdom Education Ministries. He received his BA degree from Roberts Wesleyan College and his MEd and EdD at the University of Virginia. He has been married to his wife, Sharon, for 45 years and has three children and six grandchildren. KEYNOTE ADDRESSES Understanding God s Purpose for Education, First Day, Morning Session The Importance of Worldview in Education, First Day, Afternoon Session Excellence and the Christian School, Second Day, Afternoon Session BREAKOUT SESSION Biblical Worldview Integration, Second Day, Breakout Session 3 Biblical worldview shopping is what makes education Christian. Christian educators must understand what biblical worldview integration is and how to plan and implement integration into our lessons. This workshop will address this topic through discussion, small group interaction and video clips so that we can shape the next generation's worldview from a biblical foundation. All addresses and sessions for Dr. Glen Schultz will be held in the main auditorium.

2 , Special Guest Presenter BIOGRAPHY Dr. Sheryl A. Vasso is a professor in the Master of Science in Education program at Cairn University where she has been teaching and administrating since She is a graduate of St. Joseph s University (B.S.), The College of New Jersey (M.A.), and Immaculata University (Ed.D.). In addition to teaching, Sheryl is Founder and President of Words of Worth, Inc., a non-profit incorporation which provides Biblical teaching for retreats and conference settings as well as professional development for educators both nationally and abroad. Sheryl has co-authored five Bible studies and more about her ministry can be found at Italian by family heritage, Sheryl is in God s family, and enjoys chocolate. She believes, In addition to God s Word, chocolate solves most any problem in life! BREAKOUT SESSIONS CAN BE FOUND IN THE PAGES WHICH FOLLOW All sessions for will be held in LC1.

3 BREAKOUT SESSION TITLES AND SPEAKERS BREAKOUT SESSION ONE UNDERSTANDING UNDERSTANDING This session will guide participants through an understanding of enduring understandings those understandings that remain long after the ink on a test paper has dried. Then in keeping with McTighe's three stages of Backward Design, I will walk the participants through the broad brushstrokes of those stages and what is required of each. MASTERING THE SKILLS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, PART 1 OF 2 Jill White Every teacher knows the frustration of losing valuable instructional time in order to discipline student behavior. Likewise, every student has encountered frustration while waiting for the teacher to finish dealing with a disciplinary matter with another student before returning to instruction. Much of this lost time is a direct result of minor behavior infractions that stop instruction, and frequently teachers are not trained to deal effectively with and eliminate these behaviors. Mastering the Skills of Classroom Management is based on the highly effective teaching of Dr. Madeline Hunter, professor of education at UCLA, and Coach John Wooden, the famed basketball coach and American icon, also from UCLA. The training in this workshop is proven to restore lost instructional time to teachers and students in a way that is simple, fair, and mutually respectful. The leading edge strategies are designed for any grade level and student profile and are sensible, respectful, and powerful. This training will forever improve your classroom and give you more time to teach and your students more time to learn. UNDERSTANDING ASSESSMENT DATA TO SET ACADEMIC GOALS Karen Hodge Assessment, whether norm-reference, formative, or other, plays a key role in monitoring student learning. What do the scores tell us? We are evaluating ourselves, not only our students. As teachers, assessment scores help us reflect on the prior school year- evaluating instructional strategies and materials. Looking forward, the scores help us glean information to set realistic goals and improve student achievement. MAINTAINING DEVELOPMENTAL BALANCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSROOMS, PART 1 OF 3 Biblical integration in a classroom is more than praying before snack time and casually mentioning the greatness of GOD within a science lesson. Biblical integration is planned and intentional methodology. See how to integrate prayer, creation, godly character expectations, scripture and more into your early childhood classroom. MAKE THE MOVE FROM CLASSROOM TO ADMINISTRATION Alan Horn Many of the best administrators in Christian education are promoted from classroom teaching into administration. Do all great classroom teachers make great administrators? Are there skills to be learned and worked-on when making the transition? Let's explore the pieces of the puzzle necessary needed to have a successful transition and career. If you have been chosen to lead you probably have many of these puzzle pieces in place already. Come hear Alan Horn, Anna Richardson, Ty Puente, and Sammi Volker. Topics include animals in the classroom, Christian school advisory programs, spiritual applications for physics, and more. Each topic will have something for everyone and much of the information you receive can be used immediately! AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT This workshop will focus on the purpose of performance tasks, how to create them, and how to score/evaluate them. Performance tasks are alternative assessments to the traditional paper/pencil type assessments we give to our students and are necessary if student understandings are to endure. Dr. Vasso will add her own comments and insights and help bring home through discussion and questions the important key elements of the address. Here is your opportunity to engage with fellow colleagues. WHY DO I NEED CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Robin Davenport No matter how long one has taught, here comes a time when you need help in the area of classroom management. This session will give you tips, guidelines and strategies which will help keep your students on task and develop an atmosphere to learn. You as the teacher should always be in control and know how to keep order in your class. Students learn when there are clear guidelines and consequences given consistently in your classroom.
