Webpage Course Description Welcome to Chaffey College and my English 550 class. I look forward to working with you as you become a better writer this semester. First, let s get the official description out of the way. What is English 550? According to the catalog, this course will prepare you for college-level academic writing by focusing on critical thinking, reading, writing, and study skills necessary to succeed at the academic level. Four hours of supplemental learning in a Success Center that supports this course is required, plus tutoring or other activities as recommended by instructor (source: English Department guidelines). This means you will learn many writing skills helpful in English and other college courses. You will also discover that writing is a process involving preparation, writing, and revising. In particular, you will learn to write coherent paragraphs and essays based on your personal experiences and your responses to readings in the book This I Believe. You might agree or disagree with the authors opinions; either way, you will be thinking critically. Through your reading and class discussion, we will explore the connections between identity, memory, and writing; topics for your writing will include education, creativity, family, helping others, and personal beliefs. My course even has its own slogan: Your college success begins in this class! Prerequisite: Passing English 500 or placement by assessment Grading = Pass/No pass Required Textbooks & Materials 1. A Troubleshooting Guide for Writers, 6 th ed., Barbara Fine Clouse (McGraw-Hill / ISBN )* 2. This I Believe, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Geidman (Holt / ISBN )* 3. a college-level dictionary 4. a spiral notebook for in-class writing sprints and for class notes 5. a folder for keeping handouts, drafts, paragraphs, essays, etc. 6. a stapler for stapling final drafts 7. a USB flash drive (recommended but not required) 8. an active account (recommended but not required) * Both textbooks are also on one-hour reserve at the library.

2 Watkins / English 550 / Fall Attendance Policy Attending all class meetings is required because your consistent, active participation will lead to your success in this course. Note that there are reading or writing assignments due at every class meeting, so make this class one of your top priorities in your busy schedule. Attendance = a higher chance of success! Arriving late, leaving early, or other inappropriate behavior disrupts your learning and that of your classmates. Please arrive on time to class, be ready to work, be attentive, respect your classmates, and behave politely. Please do not use your cell phone or text message during class. An absence means not attending or leaving class for any reason; there are no excused absences. A tardy means arriving after I have taken roll at the beginning of the class, and two tardies equal one absence. After you are absent once or twice, I may you or schedule a conference with you to help you get back on track in the class. I will also use the Early Alert program this semester. After two absences in the semester, you will lose one participation point for each absence thereafter. [3 absences = - 1 participation point; 4 absences = - 2 participation points; etc.] You will receive a NO PASS in the course if you stop attending and do not drop, so complete all paperwork or visit ChaffeyView as necessary. Please note the college s new policy on W grades and course repeats. Early Alert Program In order to assist students when they need support, Chaffey College uses an Early Alert System that allows your instructor to notify you if your success in this course appears to be in jeopardy. This system is designed to provide you with individualized attention while there is still time for you to successfully complete this course. The Early Alert Office may send you a letter or followed up with a telephone call to discuss your classroom performance and the on-campus resources available to you, so please use My ChaffeyView to keep your contact information up-to-date (source: Counseling Department guidelines). If you receive one of these Early Alert notices from me, please come to my office hours to discuss it so I can help you improve in the class. Late-Paper Policy Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day noted on this syllabus. Please plan ahead. If you know you are going to be absent or if you are ill, have a friend or classmate bring your work to me. I will not accept any assignments submitted by for any reason. I generally discourage you from turning in late papers. However, I will allow one late paragraph or essay (final draft) per student per semester. You must turn in the late paper at the next class meeting. I do not allow make-up work or late papers for any other assignments, such as the Writing Center requirements, the campus-event review, writing sprints, rough drafts, peer review sessions, or the final exam. If you are absent when such assignments are due, you will not receive any points for them. Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism, an unlawful act which is defined as the misrepresentation of the published ideas or words of another as one s own, will not be tolerated in Chaffey College English courses. At the discretion of the professor,

3 Watkins / English 550 / Fall plagiarism may result in zero points for the assignment and/or failing the course (source: English Department Guidelines). Plagiarism can be as limited as a sentence or as extensive as a whole paper. Because this course involves learning how to improve your writing, all of your work must be your own. In simple terms, do not steal, copy, or buy other people s work or writing. You will receive zero points for any plagiarized work and may subsequently fail the course. Top Ten Benefits of Taking English 550 (adapted from English Department learning objectives & outcomes) What can you expect to learn in this class? In a general sense, you will become a better, more confident writer. More specifically, this course will help you to improve your college-level study, reading, and writing skills understand and respond to a specific writing assignment develop the habit of using the writing process match your writing to different audiences and purposes state topic sentences and thesis statements in your writing support a main point with distinct examples express your ideas and thoughts clearly to connect with your readers identify and avoid plagiarism combine phrases, clauses, and sentences to improve sentence variety recognize and correct spelling, mechanical, or grammatical errors in your writing Assignments & Requirements Participation (9%) You will earn these points by completing various activities: group and class discussions, informal reading quizzes, in-class activities, homework assignments, paper topics. Complete all of the reading assignments before coming to class, and be ready to answer questions and discuss the material. Occasionally, you will prepare discussion questions for your classmates. Your active, thoughtful, and respectful participation in class is required. Please be on time to class, attentive, and courteous (i.e., no cell phones or text messaging). [See attendance policy.] Writing Sprints (10%) Because improving your writing requires much practice, you will complete writing sprints (similar to journal entries) (5-10 minutes each) in class weekly (15 total). I will collect your writing notebook periodically to review your work (during weeks 6, 12, & 17). Writing Center Supplemental Learning (8%) You must complete four hours of supplemental learning (four activities) in the Writing Center during the semester. Supplemental learning includes directed learning activities, workshops, or study groups. See the due dates listed on the course schedule. Meeting with a tutor for each paragraph and essay is also required but not included in these four hours. You must make an appointment before every visit to the Writing Center [(909) ].

4 Watkins / English 550 / Fall Assignments & Requirements cont. Outlines & Rough Drafts (10%) You will bring an outline and rough draft to class for each paragraph and essay. Paragraphs (13%) You will write two paragraphs (1 page / 175+ words each) in this course. You must type all rough drafts and final drafts. The types of writing will include description, analysis, and instructions. Essays (30%) You will write three essays (2 ½ pages / 500+ words each) in this course. You must type all rough drafts, and final drafts written outside of class. The types of writing will include narrative, definition, and argumentation. Please keep all of your graded papers for the entire semester. During the semester, the assignment sheets will be available on my instructor webpage: Chaffey College Event Review (10%) You will attend one event on campus (for example, sports, the theater, the Wignall Museum, or the One Book, One College program) and write a review of it (1 or 2 pages, typed). Final Exam (10%) The final will consist of an in-class essay related to your writing and reading assignments from the course. Grades & Points There are 150 points possible in this course: participation = writing sprints (1) = 15 4 Writing Center activities (3) = 12 5 outlines (1) = 5 5 rough drafts (2) = 10 2 paragraphs (10) = 20 3 essays (15) = 45 Chaffey College event review = 15 final exam = 15 TOTAL = 150 Final course grades: PASS = points = % NO PASS = points = % If you do not turn in one of the major assignments, you will most likely fail the course. There are no extra credit points possible in this course. You can calculate your grade at any point with this formula: points earned current points possible = current %. Please me or visit my office hours at any point in the semester to discuss your current grade in the class.
