ENG1D The Cartography of Myself Al Purdy Mrs. Daniels Read Al Purdy s non-fiction essay the Cartography of Myself on page 319 of Viewpoints 11 and answer the following questions. 1. What does the word cartography mean? What does Al Purdy mean when he uses the word in the title? (Full sentences.) (2 marks) 2. Why do you think that Al Purdy talks about people in his cartography as much as he does about features of the land? (Use paragraph form.) (3 marks) 3. Purdy says I think the man who is not affected at all by this map of himself that is his country of origin, that man is emotionally crippled. (322). What do you think he means by this? (Full sentences.) (2 marks) Do you agree with him? Why or why not? (Use paragraph form) (3 marks)

ENG1D The Cartography of YOURself - Writing Mrs. Daniels We have read and discussed Al Purdy s essay The Cartography of Myself together in class. Now, you are going to use his idea and the structure of his essay to write one of your own, explaining your own cartography. You may choose to use Canada as a whole, and discuss travels you have made already or, perhaps, travelling you would like to do in the future. You may also choose to focus a little more locally, and write your cartography about Ontario, Southern Ontario, or even just Grimsby. Before Writing: Brainstorm about places that have importance to you, personally. Decide on the limits of your cartography. (Canada, Ontario, Grimsby?) Fill out the planning organizer provided. Have your organizer approved by Mrs. Daniels During Writing Use your organizer to help you write your paragraphs. Start with your first body paragraph. Your essay should be typed. We will have time for this in class. Write your second and third body paragraphs. Write your introduction and conclusion LAST. Check your essay for spelling and grammar errors, and for flow. Exchange essays with a classmate. (Use the handout provided) Give each other suggestions for improvement. When finished: Submit your essay to the dropbox on our elearning site. Hand in organizer, rough draft, and editing page to Mrs. Daniels.

ENG1D The Cartography of YOURself Oral/Media Mrs. Daniels Now that you have completed your essay, you are going to create a PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress slide show to present this information to the class. Since we are all new to GSS and come from many different elementary schools, this will be a really nice way to get to know a little bit about each other. You will: Create a slide show presentation on your cartography, using the tips and techniques discussed in class. Present your slide show to the class, using appropriate oral communication techniques. Your essay, slide show and presentation will be graded using the attached rubrics. Category Assignment Value Literature Studies Question on Reading by Al Purdy /10 Writing Personal Essay /50 Media Slide Show /20 Oral Communication Presentation /20

ENG1D The Cartography of YOURself Organizer Mrs. Daniels What are some people, places or events that are important to you? Try to think of things that have helped, perhaps, to shape the person you have become. Now, pick the three most important or meaningful things from your brainstorm. Think of the three things that you feel strongly enough to write about and that you feel have shaped your own understanding of yourself and your feelings about you town or country, just like Al Purdy

For each of the three things you chose, fill in the organizer: Place #1: Place #2: Place #3: Why is it important? How has it helped make you the person you are today? What did the place or person look like? Sound like? Feel like? Smell like? Who did you meet or what did you do there?

Slide Show The Cartography of YOURself Presentation Rubrics Knowledge and Understanding Slide show shows a clear understanding of Purdy s work and of the importance of place in the student s own life. Thinking and Inquiry Slide show shows well-chosen places and events from the student s life. It clearly demonstrates why the events chosen are important to the student s cartography Communication Student communicates ideas clearly and thoroughly, making connections to Purdy s work, their own life, and the techniques for an effective slide show. Application Student applies the techniques studied in class successfully to create an interesting and effective slide show. TOTAL: /20 Presentation Knowledge and Understanding shows a clear understanding of the importance of place in the student s own life, as well as effective presentation techniques Thinking and Inquiry student explains clearly why the events chosen were important and how they fit into the idea of a personal cartography. Communication student speaks clearly and explains his or her ideas in a through and thoughtful manner. It is obvious why the events and places chosen were important and how they fit into the student s cartography. Application student applies the techniques studied in class for giving an effective oral presentation, including, but not limited to speaking clearly, loudly and slowly enough, making eye contact, showing enthusiasm, etc. TOTAL: /20
