2 ENG1D The Cartography of YOURself - Writing Mrs. Daniels We have read and discussed Al Purdy s essay The Cartography of Myself together in class. Now, you are going to use his idea and the structure of his essay to write one of your own, explaining your own cartography. You may choose to use Canada as a whole, and discuss travels you have made already or, perhaps, travelling you would like to do in the future. You may also choose to focus a little more locally, and write your cartography about Ontario, Southern Ontario, or even just Grimsby. Before Writing: Brainstorm about places that have importance to you, personally. Decide on the limits of your cartography. (Canada, Ontario, Grimsby?) Fill out the planning organizer provided. Have your organizer approved by Mrs. Daniels During Writing Use your organizer to help you write your paragraphs. Start with your first body paragraph. Your essay should be typed. We will have time for this in class. Write your second and third body paragraphs. Write your introduction and conclusion LAST. Check your essay for spelling and grammar errors, and for flow. Exchange essays with a classmate. (Use the handout provided) Give each other suggestions for improvement. When finished: Submit your essay to the dropbox on our elearning site. Hand in organizer, rough draft, and editing page to Mrs. Daniels.

3 ENG1D The Cartography of YOURself Oral/Media Mrs. Daniels Now that you have completed your essay, you are going to create a PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress slide show to present this information to the class. Since we are all new to GSS and come from many different elementary schools, this will be a really nice way to get to know a little bit about each other. You will: Create a slide show presentation on your cartography, using the tips and techniques discussed in class. Present your slide show to the class, using appropriate oral communication techniques. Your essay, slide show and presentation will be graded using the attached rubrics.
