19 Paper 1 is called Explorations in creative reading and writing. Paper 2 is called Writers viewpoints and perspectives.

20 In Paper 1 they will be given a passage to read from a short story or novel. It will have been written either in the 20 th or 21 st century. They will be asked to complete four questions on the passage. They will then be asked to complete a piece of creative writing on a topic linked to the passage.

21 For Paper 2, they will have two nonfiction sources to read one of these sources will be from the 19 th century. This will mean the style and language may not be so familiar and will be a little more challenging. Like before, they will have to answer four questions on the extracts and then they will be asked to complete a piece of writing presenting a particular viewpoint.

31 RESPECT DIGNITY PRIDE The key to success in Maths PREPARATION! Work hard in lessons practice makes perfect. Ask the teacher for help DO THIS EARLY ON! Complete all set homework tasks to a high standard, do not rush it. Make excellent use of revision guides and especially MATHSWATCH. This should be used to help with HW, in preparation for a test/ exam and just to consolidate learning. Start revision early. Attend revision sessions once they have begun.

35 Science at BHS GCSEs

36 Examination Board OCR Gateway Science Year 11 students complete either: 1. Combined Science (which counts as two GCSEs) 2. Triple Science: a GCSE in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

37 Assessment All students are assessed by examinations, there is no coursework component. However, students have to complete a certain number of practical activities during their course called PAGs (Practical Activity Group), and the knowledge and skills they develop from these activities are tested in the written examination.

38 Mathematical Component All Science GCSEs have a far greater mathematical component than before, so understanding how to manipulate data and use formula is crucial to all students. There are no formulae given to students on the examination papers, they have to learn them.

39 Examinations Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) Have 2 papers per subject, making a total of 6 examinations in total. Each examination is 1 hour and 45 minutes long.

40 Examinations Combined Science Students sit 6 examinations in total. Each examination is 1 hour and 10 minutes long. In January of 2018, the department decide on tier of entry for students: Higher or Foundation. All papers sat have to be in the same tier.

41 Grading Triple Science candidates will receive a grade of 9 1, for each GCSE, giving them 3 GCSE grades. Combined Science candidates will receive two grades 9 1. However, in Combined Science the two grades are either the same or the second grade is one grade lower. For example: 77 or 76. In this example 77 is a sound pass in both GCSEs at level 7. The second example 76, indicates that the student was a low level 7 (a 7 minus).

42 Grading The new grades match up approximately with the old grading of A* G. Level 7 is approximately an A grade Level 4 is approximately a C grade Level 1 is approximately a G grade

43 How to be successful Ask questions in class challenge your understanding. Get involved in practical tasks. Use revision guides to help: CGP revision guides for Combined Science and Triple Science can be purchased through school. Review your work regularly. Attend revision classes.
