5 Scored Activity 1 Task: To analyze an interview Instructions: You have the chance to be a guest interviewer for a website called SuchGreatViews.com where teens and young adults interview fascinating people who have influenced their lives: friends, family, and even celebrities. Before they accept you, you must demonstrate that you can recognize good interviewing techniques, analyze body language, and identify different types of questions. 1 Watch the semi-structured interview about contractor and TV star Mike Holmes on the SOFAD site by going to the link or watch from the support provided by your tutor. Then, answer the questions. His renovation reality shows air in multiple countries around the world. Dubbed Canada s most trusted contractor, his reputation for quality, integrity and honesty have international appeal. Michael James Holmes was born in Canada on August 3, He grew up in a modest three-bedroom home in the east end of Toronto, Ontario. Mike described his childhood family as poor but content. Most importantly, growing up in a blue collar working class family taught Mike the value of doing things right the first time an ethic which both of his parents exhibited. At the age of six, Holmes used his father s entire supply of lumber and nails to build a three-room tree fort in the front yard. SOFAD 5

6 ENG English and Interviews To this day, he frequently credits his dad with instilling in him a love of craftsmanship and his make it right ethic. In my eyes, he was Superman, he recalls. I talk about my dad all the time sometimes I get the feeling I talk about him too much, but he is the inspiration behind what I do, for sure. As a teenager, Mike found himself at odds with authority and would often butt heads with his teachers. Unable or unwilling to deal with the pressure of school, he dropped out in grade 11. Early on in Mike s career, he started to realize he had not only followed in his father s footsteps, but had surpassed him in his skill and knowledge of the trades. His father, Jim, died at the age of 55 in a tragic accident. As he was walking down a narrow staircase with no handrail into the basement, he missed the first step and fell. As he tumbled down the stairs, he broke his neck and died instantly. Mike has stated often that he went into television for two reasons: to be able to teach many people at once about how to avoid getting scammed and ripped off by bad contractors, and to fundamentally change the industry. Below is a list of vocabulary and expressions used in the Holmes interview. Reviewing it should help you to better understand the video. Vocabulary Shoddy: badly made or done Pops: father, dad Blue collar work: manual labour Four grand: four thousand dollars Yakking: talking at length about trivial or boring subjects First Nations: various Aboriginal peoples in Canada (excluding Inuit and Metis) Surreal: strange or unusual, dreamlike Blatantly: in an obvious way Cut corners: to take shortcuts; to save money or effort by finding cheaper or easier ways to do something Nail gun: a tool used to drive nails into wood, often driven by an air compressor Wimp: an individual who is not brave or adventurous Macho: a person who displays characteristics such as dominance, fierceness, and bravado showing he is proud to be a man. Nemesis: an opponent who cannot be beaten or overcome. 6 SOFAD
