1 Point-of-View Task Cards Common Core Resources for Standards RL3.6 and RI 3.6 Created by: Adventures of Ms. Smith

2 Point-of-View Task Cards What am I purchasing and what standards are covered? In this pack you will find a point of view poster and 12 task cards for Common Core standards RL 3.6 and RI 3.6. Task cards are half a page in size and each includes a short passage and a question. Multiply student recording sheets are also included. Standards covered: RL 3.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters RI 3.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of the text.

3 Point-of-View The point of view is the way a person or character views an object or a situation. Ask yourself: How is the way I feel similar or different to the way the character or author feels?

4 1. Johnny and his family moved from Georgia to California over the summer. Although he was enjoying the California weather, he was very nervous about starting his new school. Johnny was going into 6 th grade and this was his first time in a new school. Was he going to be able to make friends? Would people like him? He was anxious and worried for his first day of school. How is the way Johnny felt about starting a new school similar or different to the way you would feel about starting a new school? 2. Allison and her family went to the beach for vacation every summer. Although everyone else in Allison s family loved the beach, Allison didn t like it one bit. Either the sand was getting all over her or the waves were splashing in her face. She would much rather spend her vacation by a pool or at a waterpark. How is the way Allison felt about the beach similar or different to the way you feel about the beach?

5 3. Ms. Anderson assigns math and reading homework to her students every single night. Ms. Anderson s students always complain about the homework because they think they work hard enough during the school day. Ms. Anderson tells her students that homework is necessary because all students need extra practice. Do you agree with the way Ms. Anderson feels about homework or the way her class feels about homework? Why? 4. Halloween is the best holiday every year. It is better than Christmas and the Fourth of July for several different reasons. First, you get to dress up in whatever costume you want. Second, you get to go trick-ortreating with all of your best friends. Finally, you get to eat as much candy as you want! Do you agree with the author of the story above? How is your opinion similar or different?

6 5. Studies show that healthy foods can benefit kids in many ways. Children who eat healthy food instead of fast food have a better chance of avoiding obesity. Also, children with healthy diets perform better on school tests than those that don t eat many fruits and vegetables. It is very important for school lunches to stay healthy and nutritious. How is your feeling about healthy lunches for children similar or different from the author s point of view? Explain. 6. Research states that owning a pet can be great for children. Pets can teach children many life lessons. They can teach children how to be responsible and caring. They can also provide fun and joy for children. How is your feeling about children owning pets similar or different from the author s point of view?

7 7. Marcus loves P.E. and looks forward to it every single day at school. When anyone asks him what is favorite part of school is, he always answers P.E. Marcus is quick and fast. He loves running and baseball. Marcus loves. P.E. so much because he is athletic and great at sports. How is your feeling about P.E. similar or different to Marcus in the story above? 8. Research shows that allowing children to have a three month summer break might cause them to have a summer slide. This means that students will lose some of the information they learned during the previous school year. Studies suggest that instead of a summer break, schools should have yearlong school or offer reading and math programs for students over the summer. What is the author s point of view on summer break? How is your opinion similar or different than the authors?

8 9. Studies show that fish make a great first pet for children. This is because they are easy to care for and they also don t take up much space. A pet fish can teach children many life lessons including responsibility. If you are considering getting a pet, consider an easy, but fun, pet fish. Do you agree or disagree with the author that a fish would make a great first pet for a child? Explain. 10. Jenny s mom loves fall. She always tells Jenny that fall is the best season because of the cool weather and the beautiful changing leaves. Jenny disagrees because fall also means going back to school and the end of summer break. She also doesn t like the cooler weather because that means winter is quickly approaching. How are Jenny and her mom s opinions different from each other? Which opinion do you agree with?

9 11. Anna thinks gymnastics is so much fun. She loves doing fun flips and walking on the balance beam. She is always eager to get to practice at the gym and begs her mom to stay after practice to work on additional skills. Anna s mom doesn t like gymnastics very much. She is constantly worried that her daughter is going to get hurt walking on the balance beam or doing a fun trick. She wishes Anna would learn to play the piano instead. What is your feeling about gymnastics? Is your point of view more like Anna or her mom? 12. Playing outside is much more fun than playing inside. Outside you can run around, ride bikes, and even play basketball. Inside you are stuck sitting on a couch playing video games or watching television. Whenever the weather is nice I always run outside and soak up the sun and fun with my friends. I love playing outside. How is your feeling about being outside similar or different from the author s point of view?
