1 Grade 6 Electricity Topic: Science Electricity Level: 6 Intensive French Guiding Goals: Teach students about electricity while catering to a variety of learning styles. Prepare students for higher grades through teaching how to use a textbook and make concise study notes. Students learn more through teaching others; allowing opportunities for students to learn from each other and teach will help them learn more. A hands-on/activity based approach allows students to demonstrate understanding in a tangible way. Prescribed Learning Outcomes (IRP): From Old Curriculum Manipulate and control a number of variables in an experiment. Apply solutions to a technical problem (e.g., malfunctioning electrical circuit). Evaluate various methods for producing small electrical charges. Test a variety of electrical pathways using direct current circuits. Demonstrate that electricity can be transformed into light, heat, sound, motion, and magnetic effects Differentiate between renewable and non renewable methods of producing electrical energy Resources: BC Hydro FirstWave BC Science Probe 6 (2005). Topic Objectives (PLOs) Activities Materials 1 Earth Day Compile a comprehensive list of various ways in which electricity is produced Group brainstorms Felt markers Chart paper (1 per group) Acts as an introduction to electricity unit. Formative: Group brainstorms. 2 Static Electricity Identify the charges (like, unlike, or no charge) of pairs of statically charged objects (e.g., charged through rubbing various fibres and solid materials) by systematically and accurately testing their attractions describe and distinguish between frictionproduced electrical charge (static) and chemically produced electric charge (batteries) Static electricity experiment: positive vs negative charge Balloons pp Formative: See how textbook information applies to real-life dynamics
2 Topic Objectives (PLOs) Activities Materials 3 Scientific Method Suggest and systematically implement controls on variables directly related to the outcome of an experiment (e.g., amount, quality, length) Identify the charges (like, unlike, or no charge) of pairs of statically charged objects (e.g., charged through rubbing various fibres and solid materials) by systematically and accurately testing their attractions Build your own experiment: use various materials from around the classroom and see if they have opposite or similar charges Balloons Various objects made from different materials pp Formative: Scientific method worksheet 4 Currents, circuits and switches Suggest and systematically implement controls on variables directly related to the outcome of an experiment (e.g., amount, quality, length) Proficiently assemble a working electrical circuit with a switch Build simple circuits using snap circuits and incorporate a light and a switch pp Formative: N/A Summative: Scientific method worksheet 5 Series circuits and conductivity Use a persistent and organized approach to determine why a technical product (e.g., an electrical circuit) is not working, and modify it to make it work Build a simple circuit with snap circuits with a break in the circuit to test various materials for conductivity pp Formative: Seeing first hand how different materials work and trying several different objects with the same materials to check results 6 Parallel circuits and electric flow Demonstrate the difference between parallel and series circuits when using batteries Create series and parallel circuits with the students in the classroom and show how breaking the circuit affects each type differently using UFO balls and energy sticks UFO Balls and/or Energy Sticks pp Formative: Students test human circuits for understanding Summative: Test pp Sort answer, multiple choice and fill in the blanks. 7 Heat & Light Homework assignment pp Formative: 3 sentence summary 8 Electromagnetism Create circuits that reliably produce light, heat, sound, motion, and magnetic effects Produce demonstrable magnetic effects using electric current Create an electromagnet using a battery, wire and a nail and try to pick up different objects. How can you build it in different ways to affect the magnet s strength? pp Formative: Build an electromagnet based on principles from the textbook
3 Topic Objectives (PLOs) Activities Materials 9 Electricity in Motion Create circuits that reliably produce light, heat, sound, motion, and magnetic effects Transfer electrical energy into multiple other forms of energy (e.g., light, heat, sound, motion energy), safely and reliably Students will read one page per table group and write 2 sentences about it. Students at the table will work together to decide what should and should not be included in the sentences. pp Formative: Writing short sentences based on their comprehension and then checking against other students Next, one person from each table will form new groups to share the sentences. Students will be asked to write down the sentences in their science notebooks. Next groups will each do experiments from pages Alternative energy sources Compile a comprehensive list of various ways in which electricity is produced Summarize the main advantages and disadvantages of the various methods used to produce the electricity used in our daily lives All students read Water (Teacher Example of entire project and presentation.) Divide into groups of 3-4: (Electricity from) Each group gets one topic. Fossil Fuels, Nuclear Fuel, Sun, Earth, Wind, Tides, Living Things, Chemicals Green Energy kits Various art materials pp Formative: Checklist to verify work Summative: Group Presentations Students will prepare presentations: What is it? How does it work? What are the pros and cons? Provide a real-life example. (Show photos!) Make a diorama or other creative project to show how it works or how it s used. Group presentations (filmed)
