3 Skim the surface Each of these topics could be a 30 minute presentation of their own. Feel free to ask questions now or over in the future!

4 Lack of Space Scenario 1: Your gym is too small. Kids run into each other during games and get hurt. Solution: Start your year with locomotor and spacial awareness activities. Slow kids down at first by using low level locomotors (crab walk, bear crawl. etc )

5 Activities for Scenario 1 Crossfire- Students start in two lines behind cones. One at a time a student travels across the gym on a diagonal path crossing the other line of students while being aware of their surroundings. Parking lot- Students drive their cars in space,, As the space gets smaller students will recognize and slow down. SHAPE STANDARD: PE1,5

6 Equipment change Scenario 2: Students struggle to throw, catch, kick, and strike with consistency, or you don t have the type of equipment listed in the lesson plan. Solution: Change your equipment to something softer that students can succeed with. If you don t have the correct equipment...think outside the box

7 Activities for Scenario 2 Meatball Island (K-1)- Students work on throwing form by launching yarn balls across to the other team s side. The team with the the most yarn balls when the music stops wins the round. 1 on 1 on 1 Wiffle/Tee Ball (2-5)- Students are in groups of 3. 1 is the batter and tries to score runs after they hit the ball by running to a cone and back. 1 is the pitcher and the last player is the outfielder. They work together to get the ball back to home plate. Once the ball is home the Batter must stop. Then all 3 rotate. SHAPE STANDARD: PE1,5

8 Mr. Nord. I had an accident. Scenario 3: You are in the middle of teaching a lesson and you notice that one of your kindergartners had an accident. The rest of the class is unaware of the problem. However, there is a mess to clean up. What do you do? Solution: Change the activity. While students are transitioning, nonchalantly ask the student to go to the nurse and contact the custodian. Leave the gym until the problem has been cleaned up.

9 Activities for Scenario 3 Activities can be short and sweet. The custodian should be able to tidy up the gym quickly. Both activities are also good for end of class lining up activities. Slap-Clap-Snap - This activity is a follow the leader hand jive type activity. Buzz - Place students in a circle. Students take turns counting one number at a time. If it s your turn to count and the number is a multiple of 7, ends in a 7, or is a double number (i.e., 11, 22, etc.) the student says buzz instead of the number and the students keep counting going the opposite direction around the circle. Start over when a student counts incorrectly. You can make it an elimination game if you would like.

10 YOUR Gym is Not Available for Class Scenario 4: There is an event taking place at school and the gym is unavailable. It s raining outside, the library and the cafeteria are also in use. You have to teach P.E. in the regular classroom. Solution: Improvise :)

11 Activities for Scenario 4 Pong - Small sided tennis/ping pong activity. 2 v 2. Game to 3. All you need is a wiffle ball and some tape for the lines. Make a bracket and it s off to the races! GoNoodle - Wonderful resource with a plethora of activities to use when you are in a pinch Just Dance (Youtube) - Get on Youtube and find some age appropriate dances to do with your students. Teacher participation always makes Just Dance go smoother!

13 Behavior: 1st Steps Remind yourself that you are the most influential element in the classroom :) Build a plan (Leader in Me is awesome) a. Mold it into your school s current system b. This plan may bomb but at least you had one! Build relationships a. The little things that can make a huge difference. We will barely scratch the surface today. Here is another source of advice...

14 Behavior Every student is different. Everyone of us is different. But we all have very similar needs.

15 Behavior Clarity, consistency, and simplicity will be your good friends. Implement fair expectations that are designed to help a student grow into leaders in a safe and loving environment.

16 Behavior: Disengaged student Student wants nothing to do with P.E. Check the environment, peers, activity, noise, and even yourself. I am not afraid to let a student sit and just observe for a while. Does the student feel safe? Does this activity look engaging and appealing? How do the other kids look? Are there different emotions going on? P.E. is more than a fitness training class. All people are mind, body and soul. If one is out of whack, it messes with the rest. If sitting out continues to become an every class issue, communicate with the teacher and parents to make a new plan. Skit!

17 Behavior: Intensely engaged student Student wants everything to do at all times with P.E, his peers, and your sanity. Check the environment, peers, activity, noise, and even yourself. Walk and meditate. Giving these kids a set area to walk back in forth helps Kids feed of our energy. Are we triggering any nervous reactions? Skit! Clearly set this area and remind them of your expectations while walking. If a kid s emotions are way out of whack, give him or her time.

18 Behavior: Violence Sadly, some students live lives that put a lot of anger in their hearts. It is very important to discuss the protocol at your school for students who may try to hurt themselves or others before the year begins. You will never regret doing everything you can to help a student be a successful part of your classroom. Also, love and forgive yourself like you will do with your students. Let s talk scenarios!

19 Crowd Control Strategy Skits Different methods we all currently use as teachers. Whatever you use, keep it simple and appealing to the ear. Rhythm that gets the class involved catches attention while saving your voice :)

20 Crowd Control - Generous Budget Music is our friend & bluetooth turns your cell into a whistle! 1. Go get yourself a loud bluetooth player. a. b. Jawbone Big Jambox is very mobile, great battery and a good range (I ve had good luck with certified refurbished too). Harmon Kardon Onyx is what I use. It s louder, better but has half the battery life. 2. Auxiliary Cord 3. Use your mobile phone s bluetooth to play music to start & stop the class a. If you can connect to wireless, stream some music over free apps like google Play (free will come with commercials though) b. I went into my phone settings and set the buttons on the left to control volume. I just play music all day and turn the volume up when needed I decided to put over 900 mp3 songs on my phone c.

22 Tracking hundreds of kids Each kid is unique which is fantastic... and also fantastically tough to keep track off. See if your school has online rosters on programs like SIS K12. I couldn t use my real notes so here are some former WWE wrestlers.
