20 MATHEMATICS What impact has Numicon had in schools? THE STUDY In 2012, Oxford University Press and Stradbroke School (South Australia) conducted a 12-month pilot project to examine the impact of Numicon on the learning outcomes for students in their first year of school. Through professional development, the project also developed educator understanding about the teaching, learning and assessment of early and essential number concepts. KEY FINDINGS Students who had been supported by Numicon during the period of the pilot project showed a dramatic improvement in attainment in the I Can Do Maths Test A, compared to the results of students whose learning had not been supported by Numicon (Doig, B. & de Lemos, M., 2000). Students supported by Numicon: relied less on using their fingers for adding on began to use, make and write numbers earlier than other students developed greater speed in 1:1 correspondence and in adding and subtracting using whole numbers were more willing to trust the count and had stronger understanding of place value. 24 MATHEMATICS Using challenging mathematical tasks to unlock the potential of students Challenging Mathematical Tasks supports the idea that students learn best when they work on problems that they do not yet know how to solve. Peter Sullivan s research shows that many students do not fear challenges in mathematics, but welcome them. And rather than having teachers instruct them, these students prefer to work out solutions for themselves. Challenging Mathematical Tasks: includes activities that allow for sustained thinking, decision-making and risk-taking by the students features a Learning Focus, Key Mathematical Language, Pedagogical Considerations, Enabling and Extending Prompts for each task, plus Supplementary Tasks and Possible Solutions is written by a well-established expert in the field of teaching and learning mathematics follows a set structure to help students approach and work through the tasks. Persist and succeed While it is possible for everyone to learn mathematics, it takes concentration and effort over an extended period of time to build the connections between concepts, to understand the coherence of mathematical ideas and to be able to transfer learning to practical contexts and new topics. Challenging Mathematical Tasks encourages students to persist and succeed in their learning.
