1 Primary 6 Core Curriculum based on Our Discovery Island Book 5 Month Unit Aims and Objectives April Getting to Know Each Other Other: To be able to introduce yourself. To be able to ask questions about other people To welcome students back to school, settle into their routine, and establish a positive rapport between the teacher and the learners. Interview questions: What is your name? Where do you live? What do you like? What are you good at? What are your hobbies? Poster to introduce yourself and present it to Activity: Friend Interviews Students learn more about their classmates, through a structured interview, and relay this information to the whole class. Game: My English teacher is 2 Truths 1 Lies game
2 May Unit 1: Adventure Camp Other: Students will learn and be able to spell new camping-related vocabulary. Students will be able to tell what they like and dislike using gerunds. Students will be able to make sentences using simple present tense and simple past tense. To continue to learn more about the students; strengthen teacher-student relationships; and establish consistent routines and practices. Camping Vocabulary: Camping sleeping bag, tent, compass, pegs, rucksack etc. Gerunds: I like/love swimming. I am not good at swimming. Tenses: 1) Simple present and simple past: I go to school today. I went to school last Friday. 2) Continuous present: I am going to school now. Camping poster Design your own camp and create a visual poster to advertise your camp to people. Write to explain the camp that you have created in paragraph form. Island Survival skit: Decide what essential camping items to bring to an island in order to survive.
3 June Unit 2: Wild Animals Students will be able to ask questions using the word how. Students will be able to use comparative adjectives to compare different animals. Wild Animals Vocabulary: rhino, cheetah, tiger, panther, walrus, lion, giraffe, etc. How questions: How fast is the tiger? How tall is the giraffe? Comparatives with er for short adjectives: A tiger is faster than a pig. A monkey is smarter than a pig. PowerPoint presentation on endangered animals Individual poster of a wild animal
4 July Unit 3: Where I Live Students will be able to describe the neighbourhood that they live in. Students will be able to recognize different shops and places in the neighbourhood. Students will be able to use some prepositions of place. Neighbourhood and Town Vocabulary: hair salon, library, shopping centre, swimming pool, airport, sports centre, movie theatre, etc. Preposition of place: The hair salon is next to the church. The gas station is opposite the library. Individual poster of your dream town Creative advertisement to promote your town
5 September Unit 4: Good Days Students will be able to talk about actions in the past tense. Students will be able to use adverbs of time to further describe past events. Students will be able to create writing pieces using past tense verbs and various adverbs of time. Food Vocabulary: curry, fish and chips, paella, spaghetti, omelette, crepe, sushi, naan, etc. Past simple regular affirmative: Last year I climbed Mount Fuji, Last week I cooked roast chicken. Past simple regular negative: I didn t go to Tokyo last summer. He didn t come to school last Friday. Adverbs of Time: Last year, I went to Canada with my mom to visit my grandmother. I went to the Science Museum with my sister last weekend. Recount writing on one summer (or any) holiday
6 Movie and Music-related Vocabulary: 1) thriller, comedy, sci-fi, romance, musical, cartoon, mystery, documentary, etc. 2) jazz, rock, blues, pop, hip hop & rap, pop rock, classical, punk, reggae, etc. October Unit 6: Arts Students will be able to identify different genres of movies and music. Students will learn and be able to make sentences using past simple irregular tense. Past simple irregular affirmative: I saw my friends on the weekend. He wrote to his pen pal last summer. Past simple irregular negative: I didn t watch any movies last month. My mother didn t make us dinner last night. Past simple irregular interrogative: Did you hear the piano? Yes, I did/no, I didn t. Students will create their own book or movie reviews. They will learn to describe the piece and explain why they like or dislike it. Music Appreciation: Activities: Music appreciation- Students will have the chance to listen to different genres of music and try to distinguish one from another.
7 November Unit 5: Trips Students will learn vocabulary related to trips and excursions. Students will be able to use the past tense to talk about past events. Students will be able to create travel brochures to introduce a city using learned vocabulary. Trips and Excursions Vocabulary: aquarium, theatre, theme park, big wheel, water park, dodgems, carousel, mini-golf, museum, etc. Usage of the Past Tense: Did he/she go to the aquarium? Yes, he/she did. No, he/she didn t. I went/played/saw, etc. There was a big water park. Create a travel brochure of a city of your choice. Write a fictional story about an adventurous trip.
8 Space Vocabulary: planet, star, universe, Solar System, orbit, spaces ship, mission, space shuttle, rocket etc. December Unit 7: Space Students will learn vocabulary related to space and our solar system. Students will be able to use comparatives with long adjectives to compare different things. Students will be able to learn the names of the planets and other space-related vocabulary. Planet Names: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus Questions words review: Who, where, why, when, what, how, which Comparatives with long adjectives: Aliens are more intelligent than humans. Earth is more beautiful than Uranus. (Ex. amazing, frightening, complicated, exciting, interesting, etc.) Choose a planet and do a research project on it. Create a new planet and write paragraphs to describe it in detail. Adjectives - ing/ed: disgusted/disgusting, excited/exciting, amazing/ amazed, frightening/frightened, etc.
9 January Unit 8: Environment Students will learn vocabulary related to our environment. Students will understand the importance of recycling, reusing and caring for the environment Students will learn how to use superlatives with long and short adjectives. Students will be able to identify and use different adverbs of frequency. Environment Vocabulary: Recycle the paper/bottles; collect the rubbish; reuse the bags; switch off the lights; clean up; save water; save electricity; save animals; ecosystem; waste etc. Usage of the word should You should recycle bottles. Everybody should save water. Superlatives with short and long adjectives: This tree is the tallest in the forest. The water in this country is the cleanest in the world. This mountain is the most beautiful one I ve ever seen. Do a research project on what outcomes it will bring to our planet if people keep wasting Earth s resources mindlessly. Create a poster to tell people how to help and save our planet. Adverbs of frequency: always, usually, never, sometimes, hardly ever.
10 February Special Unit: The Future / Memories Students will learn vocabulary related to life and future. Students will get familiar with future tenses and be able to write sentences using future tense. Students will learn to differentiate future tense used in predictions and future tense used in plans and schedules. Students will be able create an English class yearbook at the end of the unit. Future Vocabulary: Graduate; get married; have children; go to university; get a job; become a ; live abroad; retire etc. Future tenses (predictions): In the future you will live in a foreign country. People will drive flying cars. Students won t need to go to school to attend classes. Future Tenses (plans & schedules): Next week I am going to go to Tokyo! In the holiday I am planning to visit my grandmother. Write a descriptive story on The World in the Future Create an English yearbook.
11 March All Units: Review Other: Review whatever the teacher deems most important. Ensure the school year ends on a positive note, with the students looking forward to coming back next year. Flexible: Previous language will be reviewed and practiced, rather than introducing anything new. This will depend on what the teacher deems to be the most effective use of time, and will be based on the needs of the students.
