Next license renewal: October 1, Workshop A: An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Motivational Interviewing (MI) encompasses therapeutic strategies for assisting clients with behavior change that is more collaborative than prescriptive. It respects the client s autonomy and beliefs. We will cover basic (and some advanced) principles of MI including detailed strategies for engagement and collaborative practice. We will strengthen empathic skills by focusing on the OARS interviewing model (i.e.- Open-ended questions, Affirmation, Reflective listening, Summarizing). We will use the classroom methods of lecture, discussion, demonstration and practice. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, present cases, and learn the ways in which MI can be practiced in other arenas, not only in clinical practice. Hallowell Eliot Community Human Services 6.50 CEUs Workshop B: The Worn Path: Understanding the Journey of Suicide There are many questions asked when a person commits suicide, but none is more important than WHY? Through the examination of diaries, suicide notes and case studies we will do a psychological autopsy (an intense psychological analysis) of the suicidal mind. We will study the inner workings of the minds of suicidal persons as they travel through their journey from sadness to despair. We will also look at the multi-dimensional aspects of suicide including biological, psychological, intrapsychic, interpersonal, sociological, cultural and philosophical/existential elements in the suicide event. The instructor will also offer explicit steps that can be used is the assessment and treatment of the suicidal individual. 2 Workshop C: Vicarious Trauma: Understanding the Root Causes and Identifying Protective Factors Mental health professionals who work with survivors of trauma often experience pervasive and distressing changes in how they experience their own self, others and the world at large. This is called Vicarious Traumatization. Additionally, given the current climate in the world we are forced to confront the ongoing fear of terror through international and domestic terrorist attacks. Recent violence within communities caused by racial tensions is creating additional fear and panic in our clients and in ourselves. These developments add to the nature and extent of vicarious traumatization for mental health professionals. To continue to work empathically and effectively with our traumatized clients we must be able to identify vicarious trauma and vicarious terror symptoms within ourselves. We also need to implement protective factors for ourselves, personally and professionally. This workshop will focus on the causes of vicarious trauma and vicarious terror, if it exists within you and what you need to do to protect yourself as a clinician. Time: 9:30-12:30pm Location: Boston Room, Corcoran Commons, Lower Campus Instructor: Sarah Hood, LICSW Field Faculty, BCSSW Workshop D: Office-Based Yoga and Meditation for Treatment of Anxiety This workshop will explore the many practices and supporting concepts from these two integrative methodologies that are helpful in treating the anxious client. This didactic and experiential workshop will cover: Cognitive practices of mindfulness and meditation and their application in anxiety treatment; How to use meditation to manage responses to thoughts, affects and body sensations; Simple chair-based yoga breath and body practices that affect the mind and nervous system; How to apply these interventions in office or agency settings; Cautions and contraindications to consider; Participants will practice leading simple interventions. 3 Workshop E: Ever to Excel: All Things Social Work A Conference Organized BY & FOR BCSSW Alums Come join us for a celebration of the creative work that BCSSW alums are doing in social work practice that is making a difference in the lives of others. We plan to offer twelve presentations to be delivered by our own grads that depict a variety of innovative approaches to direct clinical practice with clients as well as presentations from macro practice alums as well. This conference will also be an opportunity to re-connect with old friends and to meet new ones. A sample of the topics to be offered include: Talking About Sex: Strategies from a Sex Therapist; Untangling the Legal Quagmire of Working with Divorcing Families ; Treatment and Service Delivery Barriers for Non-native U.S. Residents: Micro and Macro Interventions. We are offering a special discounted fee to attendees of this event ($70 instead of $100). Hope to see you there! Date: Saturday, September 17, 2016 Time: 9:00-5:00pm Location: Heights/Boston/Newton Rooms-Corcoran Commons, Lower Campus Fee: $70 Organizer: The BCSSW Alumni Board 7.00 CEUs Workshop F: Working with the Emotionally Dysregulated Client: Introduction to DBT Skills Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can be a useful therapeutic approach for those who chronically struggle with suicidal behavior, self-injurious behavior or other features of Borderline Personality Disorder. This training will provide an overview of the skills used in DBT. Participants will learn some of the more formal skills within each of the four major DBT skills modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Emotion Regulation. These skill areas are designed to help enhance the client s capabilities by teaching the behavioral skills they can use to manage emotions and difficult situations. Participants will also learn ways to effectively skills coach clients as needed for increased generalizations and improved coping in their daily lives. Those who register for this workshop should already possess a basic understanding of the principles underlying DBT. 4 Workshop G: Negotiating: Basic Skills and Concepts We all know we d like to be more confident and effective when buying a car. What about when working with another organization to craft a proposal or asking for a salary increase while keeping your working relationships strong? Come learn and practice a very simple set of negotiating principles that will make you more effective as an advocate for yourself, a colleague to others and a representative for those you serve. This workshop will combine a lecture on basic negotiating principles with up to two opportunities for each participant to practice negotiating simple, yet real-world scenarios. Date: Thursday September 29, 2016 Instructor: Tiziana Dearing, MPP Faculty, BCSSW Workshop H: An Introduction to DSM 5 Since the release of the DSM 5 manual in May, 2013, clinicians continue to have questions about this new and improved model for psychiatric diagnosis, including questions surrounding how it differs from earlier approaches in these areas: (a) structural changes; (b) new/modified diagnoses; (c) the diagnostic coding process. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1.) Identify three implications of ICD 10 as it relates to the new diagnostic equation; 2.) Develop skills on how to utilize the new diagnostic criteria sets in DSM 5; 3.) Identify three key structural changes made in DSM 5. Cases will also be discussed that highlight the ways in which this new diagnostic approach can be applied in practice. 5 PARKING, LOCATIONS FOR WORKSHOPS & OTHER GENERAL ISSUES: Workshops on September 9, 16 and 17 will be held on the main BC campus in Chestnut Hill. Parking on these dates will be available at the BC Beacon St. Garage next to Alumni Stadium or the Commonwealth Garage on Lower Campus. Take a ticket when you enter either Garage. When you leave after the workshop stop by the Garage s pay station. Use a credit card to pay your parking fee. As you drive to the exit of the Garage, insert your paid receipt card at the exit gate in order for the gate to lift. The September 9 workshop will be in Fulton Hall, which is the building next to BCSSW ( McGuinn Hall). The workshops on September 16 and 17 will be held in meeting rooms located on the second floor of the Lower Campus Dining Hall, Corcoran Commons. The September 28, 29 and 30 workshops will be located in Barat House, on the BC Newton Campus (885 Centre Street, Newton, 02459). There is no charge for parking on the Newton Campus but you need to park in the visitors area or you will be ticketed. As you drive onto the campus, go straight as far as you are able. The building in front of you is Barat House. Take the long road on the right. At the bottom of the road, park in the lot on the left and then walk back up to Barat House.
