1 MATTABESETT TRAIL DISTRICT MERIT BADGE MADNESS 2018 April 7, 2018 Xavier High School Course Prerequisites & Information Revision #2 February 13, 2018 Important information for the April 7, 2018 Merit Badge Madness: Location for all Merit Badges except Railroading: Xavier High School, 181 Randolph Road; Middletown, CT Railroading Merit Badge: Amato s Toy & Hobby Store; 395 Main Street; Middletown, CT. Engineering Merit Badge: Class will be held at the NRG Power Station in Middletown. Permission Slips required. Meet at Xavier High School at 8:00 AM We will need some parents to help drive. All Day Classes run from 8:00 AM 4:00 PM AM Classes run from 8:00-11:30 AM PM Classes run from 12:30-4:00 PM Scouts should arrive by 7:30 AM to register and be at your class on time. All Scout must wear Class A Uniform to event Bring a bag lunch and water bottle. Lunch will be from 11:30 AM 12:30 PM in the Café. No food will be sold but vending machines are available. Bring a notebook and pen/pencil Bring a back pack to carry everything in. Scouts will receive information, etc. at the end of class. The back pack helps to prevent things from getting lost. Complete required prerequisites, bring supporting documentation such as pictures, signed notes, documents, etc. Scouts will receive partials if prerequisites are not completed. Print and bring with you your merit badge worksheets Obtain, read, and bring the Merit Badge Book. Bring a filled out blue card that has been signed by your Scoutmaster/Leader for each Merit Badge that the Scout is taking. BEHAVIOR: Any Scout not following instructions or behaving inappropriately will be asked to leave and no refund will be offered. Any question prior to or the day of event please contact Mike Cell: or mwr90@aol.com PREREQUSITIES ART Requirement #6 - With your parent's permission and your counselor's approval, visit a museum, art exhibit, art gallery, artists' co-op, or artist's workshop. Find out about the art displayed or created there. Discuss what you learn with your counselor.

2 AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY Requirement #3 Attend a town/city meeting. Requirement #7 Complete eight hours of community service. These requirements can be completed before or after class, bring documentation if completed. CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION Requirement #2 - Do TWO of the following: a. Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tell your counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it. b. Tour your state capitol building or the U.S. Capitol. Tell your counselor what you learned about the capitol, its function, and its history. c. Tour a federal facility. Explain to your counselor what you saw there and what you learned about its function in the local community and how it serves this nation. d. Choose a national monument that interests you. Using books, brochures, the Internet (with your parent s permission), and other resources, find out more about the monument. Tell your counselor what you learned, and explain why the monument is important to this country s citizens. Requirement #3 - Watch the national evening news five days in a row OR read the front page of a major daily newspaper five days in a row. Discuss the national issues with counselor. Choose one of the issues and explain how it affects you and your family. CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD Requirement #7 - Do TWO of the following (with your parent s permission) and share with your counselor what you have learned: a. Visit the website of the U.S. State Department. Learn more about an issue you find interesting that is discussed on this website. b. Visit the website of an international news organization or foreign government, OR examine a foreign newspaper available at your local library, bookstore, or newsstand. Find a news story about a human right realized in the United States that is not recognized in another country. c. Visit with a student or Scout from another country and discuss the typical values, holidays, ethnic foods, and traditions practiced or enjoyed there. d. Attend a world Scout jamboree. e. Participate in or attend an international event in your area, such as an ethnic festival, concert, or play. COIN COLLECTING Bring Coins COLLECTIONS Please bring your collection that you choose to share with class. Can be BSA related or not.

3 COMMUNCATIONS Requirement # 4 - Interview someone that you know well. Be prepared to give an introduction of this person to the class. Requirement # 2a - Bring pictures of yourself doing things you like in order to make a collage in class. The instructor will supply the materials required other than your pictures. Requirement #5 - Attend a public meeting. (town, city council, school board, etc.) Be prepared to share your findings in class. Requirement #7 - Do ONE of the following: a. Write to the editor of a magazine or your local newspaper b. Create a Web page for your scout troop, school, or other organization. c. Use desktop publishing to produce a newsletter, brochure, or flier Requirement #8 - Plan a troop court of honor or campfire program. Serve as master of ceremonies. COMPOSITE MATERIALS ELECTRICITY Requirement #2 Complete a home electrical safety inspection using form in worksheet. Requirement #8 Make a floor plan wiring diagram of the lights, switches, and outlets for a room in your home. Show which fuse or circuit breaker protects each one. Requirement #9 - Do the following: a. Read an electric meter and, using your family s electric bill, determine the energy cost from the meter readings. b. Be prepared to discuss with your counselor five ways in which your family can conserve energy. ELECTRONICS EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Requirement #1: Earn First Aid Merit Badge (proof of completion is required-bring completed blue card, a photo of completed blue card, a signed note from the Scoutmaster, or the printed report generated from Internet Advancement/Scoutbook that shows the merit badge and scout's name) Requirement #2c: Meet with and teach your family how to get or build a kit, make a plan, and be informed for the situations on the chart you created for Requirement #2b: Complete a family plan. Requirement #6c: Find out who is your community's emergency management director and learn what this person does to prepare for, respond to, recover from, prevent and mitigate emergency situations in your community. Requirement #8b: Prepare a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call. Prepare a family emergency kit (suitcase or waterproof box) for use by your family in case an emergency evacuation is needed. Explain the needs and uses of the contents. (It is not necessary to bring this kit with you as long as you bring a photo of the kit and the contents, and can explain the needs and uses of the contents) ENGINEERING Requirements #1, 2, and 9: Scouts need to be prepared with some research completed to support completion of these requirements. Bring completed and signed permission slip for offsite class location access.

4 FARM MECHANINCS Bring completed and signed permission slip for offsite field trip FAMILY LIFE/GENEAOLOGY Genealogy: Requirement #2a - Bring timeline and biographical sketch or 2b bring journal Requirement #3 - Bring record of notes from conversation Requirement #4b - Bring genealogical document (e.g. birth certificate) Requirement #6 - Bring completed family tree Requirement #7 - Bring completed family group record Family Life: Requirement #1 - Bring outline including notes from discussion with parents or guardian Requirement #2 - Bring list of why you are important to your family Requirement #3 - List of chores and record for doing them for 90 days Requirement #4 - Report outlining how project impacted your family Requirement #5 - Plan and carry out project with the participation of your family Requirement #6b - Bring a note from your parent or guardian confirming that you led family discussions on the topics indicated FINGERPRINTING FIRE SAFETY Requirement #6 - Conduct a home safety survey with the help of an adult. Then do the following: a. Draw a home fire-escape plan, create a home fire-drill schedule, and conduct a home fire drill. b. Test a smoke alarm and demonstrate regular maintenance of a smoke alarm. c. Explain what to do when you smell gas and when you smell smoke. d. Explain how you would report a fire alarm. e. Explain what fire safety equipment can be found in public buildings. f. Explain who should use fire extinguishers and when these devices can be used. g. Explain how to extinguish a grease pan fire. h. Explain what fire safety precautions you should take when you are in a public building. FIRST AID Requirement #1 - Scout must be Second Class rank and have completed the First Aid Requirements for Tenderfoot, 2 nd Class & 1 st Class Bring Note from Scoutmaster Requirement #2.d. Make a home first aid kit and bring with you.

5 INDIAN LORE Requirement #3.c. Make an authentic model of a dwelling used by an Indian tribe, group, or nation. Bring to class. Requirement #4 - Do ONE of the following: a. Learn three games played by a group or tribe. Teach and lead one game with a Scout group. b. Learn and show how a tribe traditionally cooked or prepared food. Make three food items. c. Give a demonstration showing how a specific Indian group traditionally hunted, fished, or trapped. MUSIC While not a hard merit badge, Music Merit Badge does require advance preparation. Scouts need to pay attention to the details contained the prerequisites and be ready for all requirements. Requirement #1 - Bring their instrument to the session with them to play. Also they need to bring music (sheet music) and be ready to play a piece from written music. This can be a solo piece or an etude or excerpt from a lesson book. Requirement #2 - Discussed during the merit badge session with the counselor. Requirement # 3 - Must complete any two of the requirements in advance. # 3.c. - If doing number 3.c. Bring a note from their Music Teacher, Parent, or Scoutmaster stating that they have completed Requirement # 3 C. - c. Serve for six months as a member of a school band, choir, or other local musical group; or perform as a soloist in public six times. # 3.a., b., or d. These require preparation and should be researched in details by the Scout with notes. The Scout will need to be prepared to discuss these with the counselor and the other Scouts attending the merit badge session. Requirement #4 - Scouts must be prepared to have completed one of the requirements in advance and show to the counselor. This requirement cannot be completed during the merit badge session and must be completed in advance. Note that requirement # 4.d. has been deleted and will no longer be accepted for this merit badge. Requirements # 5 - Be prepared to discuss the following with the counselor: Define for your counselor intellectual property (IP). Explain how to properly obtain and share recorded music. Scout will need to research this in advance and be prepared to discuss this with the counselor and the other Scouts attending the merit badge session. PERSONAL MANAGEMENT Requirement #2.a & #2.b - Budget and Expense Logs - 13 weeks Requirement #8 Time Management This can be completed before or after class. If this has been completed please bring documentation to class. RAILROADING No Prerequisites ***Please note that class will be held at: Amato s Toy & Hobby Store; 395 Main Street; Middletown, CT*** - Please arrive at 8:00 AM ROBOTICS Requirement #6 - Competitions. Do ONE of the following: a. Attend a robotics competition and report to your counselor what you saw and learned about the competition and how teams are organized and managed. b. Learn about three youth robotics competitions. Tell your counselor about these, including the type of competition, time commitment, age of the participants, and how many teams are involved. Requirement #7 - Careers. Name three career opportunities in robotics. Pick one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor, and explain why this profession might interest you.

6 TRAFFIC SAFETY Requirement #5 Do ONE of the following: (a) Interview a traffic law enforcement officer in your community to identify what three traffic safety problems the officer is most concerned about. Discuss with your merit badge counselor possible ways to solve one of those problems. (b) Using the internet (with your parent s permission), visit five websites that cover safe driving for teenagers. As a group, discuss what you learn with your counselor and at least three other teenagers. (c) Initiate and organize an activity or event to demonstrate the importance of traffic safety. (d) Accompanied by an adult and a buddy, pick a safe place to observe traffic at a controlled intersection (traffic signal or stop sign) on three separate days and at three different times of the day, for 30 minutes on each visit. At this intersection, survey (1) such violations as running a red light or stop sign; or (2) seat belt usage. Count the number of violations or number of drivers not wearing a seat belt. Record in general terms if the driver was young or old, male or female. Keep track of the total number of vehicles observed so that you can determine the percentage of compliance vs. violations. Discuss your findings with your merit badge counselor.
