3 Math Math Facts Homework: Students should already be fluent in addition and subtraction number facts (instantly recall the sum or difference within 3 seconds) to 20. Students will need to memorize their multiplication facts through 10x10 by the end of the first semester. Weekly Homework: Students will receive math homework weekly. Please look in your student s agenda to know when homework is assigned. It is important homework is returned on the due date since we will review it in class.

6 ELA - SPELLING Students will learn syllabication strategies and will continue to manipulate and construct words while participating in hands- on lessons to reinforce the learning of familiar word patterns. Below is a list of some of the word structures and patterns that will be taught throughout the year: Abbreviations Antonyms Articles Changing "y" to "i Compound words Contractions Double the final consonant Drop the e when adding an ending Homographs Homophones No change before adding an ending Prefixes Suffixes (comparative adjectives) Synonyms
7 ELA - Students are encouraged to read approximately 20 minutes each night (or 100 minutes total for the week) and keep a record of their reading. Along with reading homework, students will complete word work activities. We strongly encourage students to practice their word work at home to master high-frequency words. You can access various websites and a list of different activities on our 3 rd grade website. Spelling pattern word assessments, along with high-frequency word assessments, will be given at your teacher s discretion.

11 YOUR CHILD S DAILY AGENDA The Daily Agenda is a tool that reinforces organizational skills for your third grader. Each day, students write what they have learned, list homework that is due, and note upcoming events for the week. Students are asked to take home their: 1.) Daily Agendas, 2.) Homework folder (blue) homework assigned for the day, 3.) Reading Log (purple) reading 20 minutes CONDUCT SHEETS (located inside the front cover) Top Sheet - This sheet lists conduct marks with an explanation (front and back). Conduct marks correlate with a child s conduct grade. When given, they require a parent s signature, so please check those agendas daily. You do not need to sign the agenda unless there is a conduct mark on the top page. Homework At the bottom of this sheet, we mark if a student did not turn in their homework. Three marks for no homework becomes a formal conduct mark. Bottom Sheets: This sheet serves a few purposes: Tracks behaviors and warnings throughout the day, from class to class. Tracks the formal warnings a student is given before it becomes a formal conduct mark. Shows trends for behaviors, which is useful for us to help the student. Discipline Tracking Sheet: To receive a warning on the Discipline Tracking Sheet, the student has already received at least one verbal warning. The teacher circles the number for the rule that was not followed, and then initials the warning. If they receive a second warning from any teacher on that day, it becomes a conduct mark and it is noted on the top sheet. POSITIVE REWARDS Students earn Falcon Bucks for positive individual behavior. Falcon Bucks can be redeemed for 3 rd grade rewards. Students save and spend the money in class for a fun reward such as: Study Buddy, write with a silly pen, or video lunch with a friend.
12 3 rd GRADE TEST SCHEDULE DISTRICT BENCHMARKS Math: November 7 Reading: November 8 Science: November 9 STAAR SIMULATIONS Math: February 20 Reading: February 21 STAAR TESTS Math: May 14 Reading: May 15 The night before a test, it is very important to get a good night s sleep. On the day of testing, it is important to eat a nutritious breakfast and to bring healthy snacks to school.
