2 Where is Cambodia? Student Activities Links to SOSE and The Arts Purpose: For students to see where in the world Cambodia is, learn about the shape of the country and learn about the flag. Preparation: Photocopy the sheet provided (Cambodia map and flag Colouring In pages). Have colour copies of the flag for the students to copy and a map or globe. Procedure: Talk to the students about where Cambodia is in the world. Show on the map and/or globe. Ask students to place the capital city of Cambodia onto the map, as well as other major cities. Talk about Asian and Cambodian cultures. Ask the students if they have ever travelled to Asia, and let them tell their stories. Talk to your students about Cambodian cultures, and give some of the facts of the country. Talk about the flag and the shape of the country. Have students colour in the flag and the map of the country. Tell students that they are going to learn a lot about Cambodia. Picture Perfect Links to SOSE, The Arts, Christian Studies Purpose: To help students understand that people make assumptions based on their perceptions. Introduce visuals of Cambodia. Preparation: Photocopy photographs of Cambodia from the photograph section on the DVD. Cut each photo strategically into pieces. You will also need a globe/world map. Procedure: Show students one piece of the picture (perhaps background) and discuss what else could be in the picture. Add a second piece revealing a little more. At each stage, discuss what the picture may be about, and ask how they came to that conclusion. When the picture is fully revealed, discuss how we only tend to see part of the picture. Talk about what the students know about Cambodia (location, cultural dance, animals etc). Provide links that there are some things about Cambodia that we don t see people struggling to send their children to school, many children working in the fields, etc. Find Cambodia on the globe/world map to reinforce how close the country is to Australia. Pray for the people in Cambodia. Helping Hands Craft activity Links to The Arts, Christian Studies, SOSE Purpose: An activity for students to see that their hands can be part of action in our world. Preparation: Different shades of paper or cardboard, pens, scissors, banner. Procedure: Have students trace around their hand twice. Have one colour to represent the colour of the students skin and one a different colour to represent people of other nationalities. Glue them alongside each other with the fingers touching (like they are holding/shaking hands). Stick them on a banner saying helping hands; helping neighbours or the like. 40 Days of Prayer for Cambodia Links to Christian Studies, SOSE Purpose: For students to learn about different ways ALWS is working to help poor people in Cambodia. Preparation: Photocopy the sheet provide (40 Days of Prayer for Cambodia). Procedure: Commit your class for 40 days to learn about and pray for Cambodia. Make sure that children understand that the work of ALWS is to work side by side so that the Cambodian people themselves are empowered and feel they can achieve great things on their own.

3 Journal Time Student Activities Links to Literacy Purpose: Allow students to reflect on how they and others have helped people for the week. Preparation: Make a journal book and put it in a special corner or place in the classroom. Have a sign How I ve Helped Others. Procedure: Give all students the opportunity throughout the week where they can write or illustrate how they have shared or helped other people during the week. At the end of the week, go through and see just how much the class can help others. Talk about how people in Cambodia need our help too. Cambodian Fast Facts Links to Literacy, Visual Literacy, Maths Purpose: For students to learn some facts about Cambodia, and start to compare Cambodia with Australia. Preparation: Set up the DVD (found in the front of this folder) to play the PhotoStory movie on Cambodia (under Movies for students folder on DVD). Photocopy the sheets Cambodia: Fast Facts, found in the general information section. Photocopy worksheet provided (Cambodia Fast Facts). Procedure: All students to view the PhotoStory on Cambodia, then all students can go through the Fast Facts sheet either by themselves, in pairs, groups or as a class. Give them 5 minutes to talk about what they have remembered about Cambodia. Have them complete the Cambodia Fast Fact worksheet. Start to challenge them to consider what is similar and what is different about living in Australia and Cambodia. Australian and Cambodia Country Comparison Links to Mathematics, SOSE, Literacy Purpose: For students to compare statistics between the countries of Australia and Cambodia. Preparation: Photocopy the sheet Australia and Cambodia Country Comparison. Procedure: As a class, go through the statistics listed on the sheet. Discuss many of the findings, reiterating that Cambodia has very poor people and very rich people, and sometimes the statistics hide the truth of how people live. Encourage students to think of five more things they would like to know about Cambodia and research the answers on the internet or in a book. Human Development Index Links to SOSE, Literacy, Numeracy Purpose: For students to learn about the United Nations and their HDI rankings, and where Cambodia and Australia are placed on those rankings. Preparation: Photocopy the sheets on the Human Development Index (from general section in folder), and the world map worksheet (in this section). Procedure: Have students choose 15 or 30 places in the world to mark on their world maps the countries must be an even mix of highly developed, medium developed and low developed countries. Ask the students to consider what they learn from their maps.

4 Millennium Development Goals Student Activities Links to SOSE Purpose: For students to know about the MDGs and how Cambodia is beginning to achieve these goals. Preparation: Work out how you would like to show the students about the MDGs. You could use a Power- Point, Movie or use the handouts from this folder. Procedure: Talk to students about the MDGs, and use whatever means you have decided as a visual. Ask the students what MDGs are most important. Discuss why they are all important, and why Australia is trying to help poorer countries to achieve these goals. Ask the students to draw or write about the world that they would like to see when they are older. Christians and Buddhists Links to Christian Studies, Literacy, SOSE Purpose: For students to explore the Buddhist religion and compare it to Christianity. Preparation: Use the teaching resource sheets to learn about the Buddhist faith. Photocopy the worksheets (Christianity and Buddhism) for each student. Procedure: Discuss with the class about different religions, and how the Buddhist and Christian faiths differ. Allow them time to complete the worksheet about Buddhism and Christianity. Declaration of Human Rights Links to SOSE, Literacy, Christian Studies Purpose: For students to realise that there are people in the world who do not receive fair treatment, and so the Declaration of Human Rights becomes important to try to teach people what they are entitled to as human beings. Preparation: Photocopy the page that outlines simply some of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Procedure: Ask students to discuss why someone has to write down these rights. What rights are most important? Look at the two quotes (if the students are old enough), and discuss what they mean. Ask the students what they think is fair for their lives, and tell them that not all children in the world have a fair and just life. That s why ALWS need to continue to work hard in many different places in the world, including Cambodia. Sustainable Development Links to SOSE Purpose: For students to consider the importance of long-term development work in Cambodia. Preparation: Photocopy the worksheet provided (Bone Diagram) and the Sustainable Development Information sheet. Procedure: Have your students write the topic Sustainable Development in Cambodia on the top of the bone diagram. Have your students consider the present situation in rural villages in Cambodia, and then consider what improvements are possible for their future if sustainable development initiatives are put into place. They will need to consider the positive and negative factors of the people s lives now, and what they would like to see for the future.

5 Education Student Activities Links to Literacy, SOSE, Visual Literacy Purpose: To develop an understanding in young people about education, about gender in education and to enable them to empathise with people living in difficult circumstances in Cambodia. Preparation: Copies of education photographs from the DVD, access to information about education in Cambodia. Procedure: Step 1 Divide the group into smaller groups of three or four people and distribute copies of the photographs OR work as a class group. Allow the group time to view the photo. Step 2 Ask each group the following questions and have them report back to everybody after 5 minutes What can you see in the photograph? How does this classroom differ from your own school? What do you think are the main challenges for teachers and students attending this school? What could be done to improve the situation? Step 3 Discuss Education for all is a right. It is often very hard for rural children, poor children and girl children to gain an education in Cambodia. Ask children to think about not being able to go to school because they lived too far away, their parents were too poor to afford it or because they were a girl. Step 4 Ask the children to make a list of things they are thankful for in their school. Remind them to go home and thank their parents for all that they receive to get a good education, and to thank God for all the blessings that he gives to each person. What Can I Do? Links to SOSE, English, Christian Studies, The Arts Purpose: Students can understand that they have a voice which can be heard. Preparation: Photocopy Action: Fundraising Ideas and Bible verses (students can use these for reference); bibles. Put story It Makes a Difference on OHT or PowerPoint (provided). Procedure: Discuss with students: Can each person make a difference to the justice issues in the world? Yes, individuals can make a difference even though it may not seem so. Read following story and discuss with students. Find bible verses that enlighten us about how God wants us to consider those affected by issues of injustice (see bible verses relating to poverty and injustice). How could a ripple effect be an example of how individuals can make a difference? List the things that students can do to make a difference. For example: Pray for people dealing with issues of justice Become aware of and involved in justice issues Millennium Development Goals; Make Poverty History; The Micah Challenge Value education Keep learning! Learn to read, reason and communicate to make informed choices and understand events Strengthen your skills Talk to people that are different from you Learn your rights and those of other people Find your voice Fundraise through ALWS towards Projects in Cambodia.
