Students will also receive extensive instruction on writing critically about short stories, full-length works (such as novellas, novels, plays, or biographies), and poems. The course will include critical analysis and research involving one or more literary genres.

2 Course Objectives: 1. Identify and describe the genres of fiction, drama, and poetry. 2. Analyze the elements of literature (theme, plot, character, point of view, symbol setting, tone, imagery, figures of speech, and style). 3. Interpret short stories, plays, poems, and novels. 4. Organize and compose essays analyzing literature. 5. Compare and contrast handling of theme and subject between two authors. 6. Synthesize, apply, and evaluate critical studies of literature. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will: 1. Write an out-of-class, thesis-driven essay that identifies and analyzes the literary elements of a primary text (plot, theme, setting, point of view, character, style, symbol, etc.). 2. Effectively incorporate quotations from a primary text. 3. Effectively utilize scholarly sources as secondary support. Students with Disabilities: It is the policy of the El Camino Community College District to encourage full inclusion of people with disabilities in all programs and services. Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class should contact the campus Special Resource Center (310) , as soon as possible. This will ensure that students are able to fully participate. Academic Honesty and Plagiarism: El Camino College places a high value on the integrity of its student scholars. When an instructor determines that there is evidence of dishonesty in any academic work (including, but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, or theft of exam materials), disciplinary action appropriate to the misconduct as defined in BP 5500 may be taken. A failing grade on an assignment in which academic dishonesty has occurred and suspension from class are among the disciplinary actions for academic dishonesty (AP 5520). Students with any questions about the Academic Honesty or discipline policies are encouraged to speak with their instructor in advance. Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend their classes regularly. Students who miss the first class meeting or who are not in regular attendance during the add period for the class may be dropped by the instructor. Students whose absences from a class exceed 10% of the scheduled class meeting times may be dropped by the instructor. However, students are responsible for dropping a class within the deadlines published in the class schedule. Students who stop attending but do not drop may receive a failing grade. Recording in the Classroom: The use of any recording device during class without the prior consent of the instructor is prohibited, except as necessary to provide reasonable auxiliary aids and academic adjustments to disabled students who present official documentation from the Special Resource Center to the instructor prior to recording. This is to protect privacy and to create a safe classroom environment where all participants can discuss potentially controversial or sensitive subjects freely. If you want to take a photograph or make an audio or video recording, you must get the prior written permission of the instructor. The instructor also may require the verbal and/or written permission of everyone present. Even if a student gets permission to record, the recordings are only for personal use and may not be distributed, posted, published, or shared in any manner. A student who records without instructor permission or distributes any recordings is subject to disciplinary action in accordance with El Camino College District Administrative Procedure 5500 Standards of Student Conduct.

3 Title IX: You should know that if you reveal gender-based or sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking or intimate partner violence to any instructor, we are required by law to report the problem to the Office of Staff and Student Diversity. However, psychologists are not required to report to the Office of Staff and Student Diversity. You can call the Student Health Center at or visit their website: Classroom Policies: Our classroom needs to be an optimal, positive environment for learning, so that you can focus on the course materials without disturbance; therefore, all cell phones, hands-free and other electronic devices must be turned off and put away before class (see table below). If you have an emergency that requires you to be available by phone during class hours, please notify your instructor before class starts, and sit near the door with your phone on a silent setting. It is never okay to disrupt the learning environment. *CELL PHONES* under certain circumstances, using a cell phone during class for class purposes will be allowed. Drafts: We will be writing multiple drafts of all compositions. The writing process is one of the most important aspects of this course, and pre-writing, rough drafts, and peer-review are all required parts of your final compositions. You will receive a lot of guidance revising your drafts in class, but this can only work if you bring them with you to class. If any of your drafts are missing when you turn in your final draft, 10% will be deducted from your final grade for each missing part. Socratic Seminars (report and participation) Late Assignment Policy: I accept late 200 pts (50 points each) Project 1: Poetry Project 2: Fiction part 1 Project 3: Fiction part 2 Project 4: Drama Composition 1: The author (5 pages) Composition 2: Gender (5 pages) Composition 3: Class (5 pages) Composition 4: Race (5 pages) In-Class Final Exam (5 pages) Total: 50 pts 50 pts 50 pts 50 pts 100 pts 100 pts 100 pts 100 pts 200 pts 1000 pts work, but points will be deducted for each class period an assignment is late. 1 Class period late loses %, 2 Class periods late loses %, and 3 or more class periods late will result in a 0 for the assignment.
