2 Family and Consumer Sciences Mission Statement The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences is to develop strong individuals in the areas of health, wellness, nutrition, design, parenting, and life-building experiences to produce lifelong learners and students who appreciate the global nature of our ever-changing society. s Health Middle School Students will explore topics related to human growth and development to enhance personal and family wellness and health. F.C.S. 7 Students will develop critical thinking and creative skills in the following areas of Family and Consumer Science (F.C.S.); clothing, fashion, hand sewing, food/nutrition, interior design and consumer management. Students will be able to personalize projects to meet their creative thought processes, while learning to use equipment, follow directions, problem solve and measure. Discovering Foods 8 th Grade Elective Students will have basic experiences and knowledge in cooking, serving and eating while working with peers in groups. The use and care of kitchen equipment and the development of good nutritional habits for a healthy lifestyle are included along with many cooking experiences. Clothing 8 th Grade Elective Students will develop an appreciation of clothing styles and fashion as these topics relate to current sewing trends. Students will learn to operate a sewing machine, use sewing equipment, understand patterns and sew simple projects. Basic sewing skills will be developed while completing a pillowcase, flannel pants and other projects as skills and time allow. Iowa Life and Homes 8 th Grade Elective Students will discover the relationships between home and the main industry in Iowa, agriculture. Knowledge will be gained in the areas of floor plans, furniture arrangements and decorating. These areas will then be tied to the products from Iowa and how they are used. Introduction to agriculture will help the student s experience and preview classes offered at the high school.

3 High School Foods and Nutrition I Foods and Nutrition I students will complete necessary items in order to be eligible to participate in lab activities. Students will demonstrate ability to plan, prepare, and evaluate lab activities. Students will follow basic safety and sanitation procedures in lab activities while performing various cooking methods. Foods and Nutrition II Foods and Nutrition II students will build upon prior knowledge from Foods and Nutrition I. Students will complete necessary items in order to be eligible to participate in lab activities. Students will demonstrate ability to plan, prepare, and evaluate lab activities. Students will follow basic safety and sanitation procedures in lab activities while performing various cooking methods. Advanced Foods Advanced Foods students will build upon prior knowledge from Foods and Nutrition I and II. Students will complete necessary items in order to be eligible to participate in lab activities. Students will demonstrate ability to plan, prepare, and evaluate lab activities. Students will follow basic safety and sanitation procedures in lab activities while performing various cooking methods. Students will plan, prepare, and serve a heart healthy meal four people on a limited budget. Interior Design I: Basic Home Decorating Basic Home Decorating students will analyze different types of interiors. Students will analyze elements and principles of design and furniture styles. Students will produce living room and bedroom proposals. Interior Design II: Decorating Your Environment Decorating Your Environment students will build on the concepts covered in Interior Design I. Students will apply the elements and principles of design while producing kitchen, bathroom, storage, and whole-house proposals. Interior Design III: Advanced Interior Design Advanced Interior Design students will build on the concepts covered in Interior Design I and II. Students will collaborate with the Industrial Technology students during specified phases toward the completion of the Construction Trades house. Sewing I: Basic Fashion Design Basic Fashion Design students will demonstrate basic sewing techniques while safely operating the sewing machine, serger, and other sewing equipment. Students will select, prepare, layout, and create a variety of products. Textiles and Clothing: Fashion Design II Fashion Design II students will build on the concepts and skills practiced in Sewing I. Students will demonstrate ability to program and operate embroidery machine. Students will create an ensemble.

4 Tailoring: Advanced Fashion Design Advanced Fashion Design students will build on the concepts and skills practiced in Sewing I and Textiles and Clothing. Students will create and construct original items. Students will extend sewing skills to create a product. Child Development Child Development students will identify ages and stages of development, research and describe congenital disabilities, and participate in a real-life simulation. Parenting Parenting students will examine parenting concerns and decisions from birth through the preteen years while exploring the developmental significance of children s relationships with parents and siblings and the factors that influence those relationships. Independent Living Independent Living students will develop skills related to consumerism, housing, marriage preparation, parenthood, and careers. Students will identify, examine and develop skills identified in creating a productive, fulfilling life.

5 Health Students will explore topics related to human growth and development to enhance personal and family wellness and health. 7 Discovering Foods 8 th Grade Elective This class is designed to provide basic experiences and knowledge in cooking, serving and eating while working with peers in groups. Introduction to agriculture will help the student s experience and preview classes offered at the high school. FCS.ILH.01 Students will relate their knowledge of plants, city planning and landscaping in projects.
