Understanding Scantron Research Services Today s education environment relies on assessment results to meet state and federal guidelines and to guide instruction. Understanding the context of those results is key to implementing them effectively, but most educators are too busy educating to conduct contextual research. Scantron can help! Scantron is now offering an array of Research Services. Using past client studies and current client requests, we ve developed a suite of research services to help you understand and use your assessment results. This guide provides detailed descriptions of the available types of studies as well as study requirements, timelines, and preferred data formats. Research investment varies based on the scope and magnitude of the prospective study, so contact your Scantron representative today. How Does Scantron Collect the Data? A research study is only as good as the data provided. Since Scantron only has access to a small fraction of the data available to your school or district, we recommend that you provide complete datasets for the studies of interest, especially when data from two or more assessment instruments are required. This means you can verify information when duplicate student identifiers or incomplete observations are present, which helps prevent data from being lost or omitted in the study sample and ensures that your results are accurate, reliable, and useful. Once you finalize the datasets, we provide you with login information to the Scantron Databridge site (a secure, encrypted file exchange server) where you can upload your data files. We then perform the analysis and reporting on the data you provide. What Research Services Does Scantron Provide? Scantron provides the following types of studies and support: Test Validation: Correlation Studies Predictability Studies Reliability Studies (Achievement Series only) Linear Equating Studies Differential Item Functioning (DIF) Analysis Score Verification (Achievement Series only) Evaluation Studies Research Design and Evaluation Support Statistical Consultation Copyright 2008 Scantron Corporation Page 1
Test Validation Services Test Validation Services Scantron provides a variety of test validation services, including ones to analyze both Achievement Series and Performance Series test data (Correlation and Predictability studies), and one to analyze Achievement Series formative assessment data only (Reliability studies). The results from these services provide evidence to support the validity and/or reliability of the assessment instrument of interest. Correlation Studies (Achievement Series and Performance Series test data) Correlation studies focus on providing information that demonstrates the relationship between performance on Performance Series assessments or Achievement Series Benchmark tests and performance on another measurement instrument (such as a specific state test). They answer the question If students do well (or poorly) on a Performance Series or Achievement Series test, will they also do well (or poorly) on State Test X? This type of study provides general correlation; it does not predict specific performance on the high-stakes measure or provide cut scores. Study Requirements Minimum sample size of 200 students per combination of grade level and subject Performance Series or Achievement Series Benchmark test scores and state test scores for your students: Scores must fall within an 8-week window. If the window between the two tests is too large, the additional instructional time students have received may introduce variance. For example, you administer a state test in the first week of September. You must administer the Achievement Series Benchmark test no later than the first week of November for the correlation to be valid. Scores must match across student population (i.e., each student in the data set must have scores for both assessments to be correlated) If each student does not have both scores, no correlation is possible. For example, if you are correlating a Performance Series subject diagnostic assessment with your state test, all students in the study must have scores for both tests. Students without matching scores will be omitted from the study. Preferred Data Format See Sample Data File A on page 11. Study Procedure 1. You submit the datasets to be used for the study. 2. Scantron receives your datasets and reviews them for usability. 3. Scantron requests and receives any data corrections or additions. 4. You and Scantron collaborate to finalize and approve datasets for analysis. Once the datasets are finalized and approved, a Correlation Study will take approximately 3 weeks. 5. Scantron conducts Correlation Study analyses and summarizes results. 6. Scantron provides a Research Brief. Page 2 Copyright 2008 Scantron Corporation 3/2010
Test Validation Services Deliverable A Research Brief (see Sample Research Brief on page 15)containing: a description of the data details regarding the analyses a summary regarding the Correlation results Costs The cost will vary based on the scope and magnitude of the prospective study. We will need additional information regarding the number of grades and subjects that you would like to have included in your Correlation Study before we can provide a cost estimate. Predictability Studies (Achievement Series and Performance Series test data) Predictive Validity studies focus on the use of Performance Series assessments or Achievement Series Benchmark tests to predict performance on state tests or other high-stakes measures. This type of study takes the data provided and establishes a relationship between performance on the Scantron assessment and proficiency levels on state tests. Once the relationship between the two tests has been established, then the resulting information can be used to create tools that assist educators. For example, we can use this information to develop a collection of Performance Series cut scores that correspond to their state test cut scores defining the various proficiency levels. Tools Created from Research Study Results Performance Series Cut Scores (Math) Performance Series Scores Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Study Requirements Minimum sample size of 1000 students per combination of grade level and subject Performance Series or Achievement Series Benchmark test scores and state test scores for your students All scores for the Performance Series or Achievement Series test to be compared must fall within a 6-week window. NOTE: The Performance Series or Achievement Series Benchmark test must be administered before the state test If the window during which students take the Performance Series or Achievement Series test is too large, the additional instructional time students have received may introduce variance. For example, you administer an Achievement Series Benchmark test starting the second week of September. All students must have completed that test by the end of October. 3/2010 Copyright 2008 Scantron Corporation Page 3
Test Validation Services Scores must match across student population (i.e., each student in the data set must have scores for both assessments) If each student does not have both scores, no regression is possible. For example, if you are establishing a relationship between a Performance Series subject diagnostic assessment and your state test, all students in the study must have scores for both tests. Students without matching scores will be omitted from the study. Documentation containing the state test proficiency levels and the test score range associated with each proficiency level for each grade Preferred Data Format See Sample Data File A on page 11. Study Procedure 1. You submit the datasets to be used for the study. 2. Scantron receives your datasets and reviews them for usability. 3. Scantron requests and receives any data corrections or additions. 4. You and Scantron collaborate to finalize and approve datasets for analysis. Once the datasets are finalized and approved, a Predictability Study will take approximately 3 weeks. 5. Scantron conducts Predictability Study analyses and summarizes results. 6. Scantron provides a Research Brief and a cut score datasheet. Deliverables A Research Brief (see Sample Research Brief on page 15) containing: a description of the data details regarding the analyses a summary regarding the Predictability results A cut score datasheet providing Performance Series cut scores or Achievement Series test scores that correspond to your state test cut scores Costs The cost will vary based on the scope and magnitude of the prospective study. We will need additional information regarding the number of grades and subjects that you would like to have included in your Predictability Study before we can provide a cost estimate. Reliability Studies (Achievement Series test data only) NOTE: Scantron has already performed extensive reliability research on Performance Series items and results. Reliability Studies examine the internal consistency of measures by determining how well items correlate with one another. This type of study provides feedback to clients regarding the reliability of Achievement Series Benchmark tests created through their test development process. Study Requirements A minimum sample size of 100 students per combination of Achievement Series Benchmark test and grade level Achievement Series Benchmark test scores for your students Scores must fall within a 6-week window. Page 4 Copyright 2008 Scantron Corporation 3/2010
Test Validation Services If the window during which students have taken the test is too large, the additional instructional time students have received may introduce variance. Scores must include item-level response data for each student For example, Student A received a total score of 75 points on a 100-point test. Student A s scores must include his or her specific answer choices for each question (e.g. Q1A, Q2D, Q3C, etc.). Students missing this information will be omitted from the study. Documentation containing test details for the specific Achievement Series Benchmark tests being examined Preferred Data Format See Sample Data File A on page 11. Study Procedure 1. You submit the datasets to be used for the study. 2. Scantron receives your datasets and reviews them for usability. 3. Scantron requests and receives any data corrections or additions. 4. 10 Linear Equating Studies Linear Equating Studies Linear Equating Studies focus on establishing proficiency cut-points on Performance Series assessments or Achievement Series Benchmark tests that are comparable to the cut scores on the state high-stakes test. Concurrent scores from the two test types are used to establish a relationship between performance on the Scantron assessment and proficiency levels on state tests. Study Requirements Minimum sample size of 2000 students per combination of grade level and subject Performance Series or Achievement Series Benchmark test scores and state test scores for your students Scores must fall within a 2-week window on either side of the state test administration. If the window between the two tests is too large, the additional instructional time students have received may introduce variance. For example, you administer a state test during the first week of October. You must administer the Achievement Series Benchmark test no earlier than the third week of September and no later than the third week of October for the study to be valid. Scores must match across student population (i.e., each student in the data set must have scores for both assessments) If each student does not have both scores, no relationship is possible. For example, if you are equating a Performance Series subject diagnostic assessment with your state test, all students in the study must have scores for both tests. Students without matching scores will be omitted from the study. Documentation containing the state test proficiency levels and the test score ranges associated with each proficiency level for each grade Preferred Data Format See Sample Data File A on page 11. Study Procedure 1. You submit the datasets to be used for the study. 2. Scantron receives your datasets and reviews them for usability. 3. Scantron requests and receives any data corrections or additions. 4. You and Scantron collaborate to finalize and approve datasets for analysis. Once the datasets are finalized and approved, a Linear Equating Study will take approximately 6 weeks. 5. Scantron conducts Linear Equating Study analyses and summarizes results. 6. Scantron provides a Research Report. Deliverable A Research Report containing: a description of the data details regarding the analyses a conversion table expressing Performance Series scaled scores or Achievement Series test scores to their state test cut scores a summary regarding the Linear Equating results Cost The cost will vary based on the scope and magnitude of the prospective study. 13 Consultation and Evaluation Services Consultation and Evaluation Services Evaluation Studies Evaluation studies may include either of the following scenarios: The first focuses on examining the effectiveness of curriculum, instruction, and intervention when utilizing Performance Series as outcome measures. The second evaluates the impact on student achievement that interventions may have when formative assessment or data-driven decision making (Achievement Series assessments and/or Performance Series tests are being used) is a critical component of the intervention process. Study Requirements Minimum sample size of 200 students per combination of grade level and subject Performance Series or Achievement Series Benchmark test scores and state test scores for your students: Scores must fall within an 6-week window. If the window between the two tests is too large, the additional instructional time students have received may introduce variance. For example, you administer a state test in the first week of September. You must administer the Achievement Series Benchmark test no later than the third week of October to get the best relationship between the two scores. Scores must match across student population (i.e., each student in the data set must have scores for both assessments to be examined) If each student does not have both scores, no relationship is possible. For example, if you are examining a Performance Series subject diagnostic assessment with your state test, all students in the study must have scores for both tests. Students without matching scores will be omitted from the study. Description of the goals of the Evaluation study and explanation of how assessment results are being utilized as part of the intervention process Documentation containing the state test proficiency levels and the test score ranges associated with each proficiency level for each grade Preferred Data Format See Sample Data File A on page 11. 20 SCANTRON Corp. Research Briefs Research Department Predictability Study: Performance Series and the LEAP Mathematics Assessment Program in School District A July 2008 Introduction This report documents a series of analyses regarding the relationship between the Performance Series mathematics assessment and the mathematics scores from the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP). Data for these analyses were obtained from School District A and cover the academic year in grades 3 through 9. The Performance Series mathematics scores used in this analysis were obtained in Fall of In all, test scores from more than 13,000 students were analyzed for this report. These analyses used Performance Series test scores obtained in the beginning of the academic year to predict two mathematics outcomes at the end of the academic year. These two outcomes were the LEAP mathematics scale score and the LEAP mathematics normal curve equivalent (NCE) score. Summary and Results The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) provides assessments in mathematics for students in grades 3 through 11. For the purposes of these analyses, only scores from grades 3 through 9 were used due to low student counts in grades 10 and 11. The LEAP provides a scale score in mathematics for grades 3 through 9 as well as a normal curve equivalent score for grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. In these analyses, Performance Series mathematics scale scores were used to predict either the LEAP scale scores or the LEAP NCE scores using a simple linear regression model. The simple linear model used to predict LEAP scores from Performance Series scores is: State test = * PS + wherein State test represents the Math state test scale scores (or NCE scores), PS is the Math Performance Series scale scores, 0 and 1 are the unknown intercept and linear parameters, and is the estimation error. In all, a total of 12 separate regression equations were estimated to account for the varying grade levels (3 through 9) and outcomes. The results for all of the regression analyses are summarized in the tables below. All of the regression equations significantly predict the outcome measures. Most of the R 2 values are in excess of.50, with some exceeding.60, indicating that the majority of variance in state test scores among students can be predicting by the Performance Series assessment. Overall, the relationship between Performance Series and LEAP math scores is strong and stable across time. We note a greater predictive relationship for the LEAP scale score outcome relative to the NCE outcome. These findings are consistent with other correlation and predictive validity studies between the Performance Series and other statemandated assessment programs. Thus, the Performance Series is an adequate measuring tool for preparing teachers and students for the LEAP math state assessment program. An example of where these regression estimates can be applied is in the case where the scale cut values for performance levels are known. In such a case, one can determine the equivalent Performance Series scale cut values by using a one-sided confidence interval. One can then implement Performance Series to monitor the progress of students throughout the academic year and the likelihood of their inclusion into the various state test performance levels.
