Additional details will be provided when these exercises are assigned. Ch. 5 FBD Exercises: For Probs. 5.15, 5.25, 5.31, 5.113, draw the FBD for the object, labeling all reactions. Ch. 6 FBD Exercises: For Probs. 6.75, 6.77, 6.91, 6.100, draw the FBDs for each individual member, labeling all forces and/or moments. Connect HW: Connect is an online computer homework system. To begin using Connect, you must first register at the McGraw-Hill website (I recommend that you register by the first day of class... earlier if you want to get started on work): The Connect access code is included with the book, provided the ISBN number listed for the course is used. If you ordered a book with this ISBN and are still waiting to receive it, then you should register using the free trial period, as described below. If you choose 3
4 to purchase a used book or a book that does not have the access code bundled with it, then Connect Access can be purchased directly from the McGraw-Hill web site listed above (approx cost is $60). Also, an ebook version of the text combined with Connect can be purchased (this is called Connect-Plus) directly from the McGraw-Hill web site listed above (approx cost $110). If you use the ebook, then you would not need a print version of the book. However, if you have the ebook, there is an option to order an inexpensive paper copy of the text so that you have this for future reference. Additional comments on registering will be given in the Intoduction.mp4 video, which will be posted soon on the course website. FREE Trial Period for Connect: If you like, you can begin using Connect for free, for a period of 3 weeks (21 days). If you do this, you might want to wait to register until you are ready to begin work, since the 3 week clock begins when you register. You must complete your registration prior to the end of the trial period. After this period expires, you will not be able to do further work, I may have difficulty obtaining grades for your prior work, and there may be other problems. Connect HW sets are due just before midnight (11:55 PM) on the dates indicated. They will be collected automatically if you don t explicitly submit them. Important: keep a neat and complete paper copy of all your homework, just as if you were going to submit this to your instructor for grading. Occasionally, Connect may not save your work. You will want to have a neat and complete copy of your work in case you need to re-enter any results, or if you must give this to one of the instructors for hand grading. Furthermore, a neat paper copy will help you to review for exams. Exam Details: The two midterm exams and the final exam will be held on the dates indicated, from 5:30-7:00pm, Central Time; you must be available at those times. These exams can be taken on campus or remotely (your choice). They are handwritten, just as if you were taking Statics during a regular semester on campus. If you want to take the exams remotely, then there are a few more comments and a few more requirements for your computer equipment, as follows: 1) There will be live video-proctoring of you while you take your exams, and this will be done using your laptop or desktop computer. While the addition of video proctoring is new for us this summer, it looks very easy and painless. 2) You need a camera/microphone connected to your computer for the video proctoring. The built-in camera and microphone that most computers have is fine. If your computer does not have this, then an inexpensive USB camera/microphone that you can plug into your computer will be fine. 3) You need access to a scanner to scan your exam to a single pdf file that you will back to us (or upload to a drop box), within one hour after the exam is over (i.e., you will have from 7:00-8:00 pm to scan your exam and it to us). You don't necessarily need to own a scanner, you just need to have access to one (a copy shop would be able to do this, or perhaps a public library, although you will need to verify that they will be open from 7:00-8:00 pm). I might mention that 4
5 scanners are cheap ($50 or so), so if you don't already have one, I would consider buying one as you will certainly find many other uses for it. Note that the pdf file you produce must be high quality, so that it is easy to read and grade. Experience has shown that cell phone photos and digital camera photos are not acceptable. Course Grade: All homework problems, except for the two FBD exercises, will be done using McGraw-Hill s on-line Connect homework system. The remaining portion of your grade will be determined by the two midterm exams and the final exam: Weighting Two Midterm Exams (25% each) 50% Final Exam 25% Connect HW 20% FBD exercises (2.5% each) 5% Approximate grading A % B C D F - Below 60 AB, BC and borderline grades decided based on final exam. Closing Remarks: Summer Statics is a fair amount of work, mainly because we cover a normal 15 week semester in 8 weeks. So, to be successful in summer Statics, you need sufficient time (I estimate 20 hours per week, which translates to about 4 hours per day for 5 days a week), and some discipline to keep up with the pace. The pace at which you move through the material is somewhat flexible... you could work a day or two ahead, or maybe be a day behind. 5
