3 1.!Introduction In this year, we held student chapter office election in February, and Mr. Wei-Yi Tsai was elected to be the new president of SPIE NTU Student Chapter. He teams up with chapter members and offices to proceed several activities. There are many experts, were invited by SPIE student chapter for giving interesting talk. All speech topic of these experts are about nanophotonic and other optical related, which deeply inspire us with some interesting and wonderful ideas. In the middle of the year, NTU provide us an opportunity to hold student chapter exhibition. We take advantage of this festival to introduce the basic knowledge of optics and history of SPIE student chapter for high school and university students, which always attract wide attentions and responses. The members of NTU Student Chapter reach to 23 people this year. Thanks to the support from SPIE, NTU Student Chapter will keep holding more optical activities and sharing the valuable experience with attendances in the future. 4 2.!Activities and Special Events 2.1 Farewell Party and Officers Election In February 2016, the numbers of NTU SPIE student chapter would have a Farewell Party to select the next president and officers with our chapter advisor, Professor Din Ping Tsai. This gathering not only cements the relationship between members but also provides a chance to hold officer selection. In the beginning, the president of SPIE student chapter to give a short speech, expressing achievements and difficulties during this year. After that, there are seven candidates involving this election. They demonstrate their own aspiration, and propose constructive plane for good standing of student chapter. Finally, Wei-Yi Tsai and Jia-Wern Chen were elected as the president and vice-president of SPIE student chapter in To welcome the new SPIE student officers, we shared pizza and drinks with all members during this gathering. 4

(B) A group photo was taken with all members and Prof. Din Ping Tsai. 2.2!Student Chapter Exhibition in NTU Every year, our school hold a Student Chapter Exhibition which is one of the most important activities at the beginning of semester for the freshman and adjacent senior high school students because all the associations of school join this exhibition as well. We take advantage of this exhibition to introduce optics and SPIE student chapter to high school and college students. There are two main purpose for joining this exhibition. First one is for the education of senior high students, we prepared many easy and interesting optics phenomena, such as polarization plate, hologram and rainbow glasses. The second goal is for the introduction of fantastic phenomenon of optics to younger students by laser games. We attract lots of students interested in optics when we execute this demonstration. There were more than 300 people visiting our student chapter booth, and we also introduced the SPIE student chapter in National Taiwan University. Some freshmen show their interest to join the SPIE student chapter and ask us for contact information. 5

Prof. He s group use the paper as flexible electronics for mitigating the cost of fabrication process and achieving multi-functional devices. It has several characteristics, such as flexible, foldable, cost-efficient and mass producible, opening a new avenue for diverse applications of flexible electronics. Taking advantage of the Origami art s algorithm, the photodectors and nanogenerators composed of the flexible paper are successfully revealed. They believe that they can apply this technology on energy harvesting and sensor in the near future. 6

8 2.3!Invited talk and short course In this summer, it s our honor to held a short course about the research topic of metahologram, metapolarimetric, and the introduction of metasurface. The speaks including Dr. Pin Chieh Wu, Dr. Hui-Hsin Hsiao, Dr. Cheng Hung Chu, and Dr. YaoWei Huang. There are four parts in this short course, which are design of meta hologram, gradient metasurface, introduction of metasurface: from fundamental properties to potential applications, Phase change materials and Femtosecond laser fabrication for plasmonics structure, respectively. In these talks, speaks talk about the basis principle of metasurfaces and the crucial points for designing these devices. Students also have question time after speech. (a) (c) (b) (d) Figure 4. (a)-(d) Photos of the metasurface short course. 2.4!End-of-Semester Gathering When approach the end of semester, our chapter held a gathering for cementing the relationship of student chapter. In the beginning, the president of SPIE student chapter Wei-Yi Tsai shares the held activities in this semester with student members. Also, we invited Prof. Din Ping 8

In this year, we had held several activities, including student chapter exhibition in NTU, SPIE visiting lecture, End-of-Semester Gathering and metasurface short course. Group members also attended the 2016 SPIE Optics + Photonics conference and gained a lot of knowledge about organizing and managing student chapter in this conference. Last but not least, we would like to thank for our student chapter advisor Prof. Din Ping Tsai, who always give us assists and suggestions. We look forward to holding more activities and making our student chapter thriving in the near future. 11
