2 1) What is Stamp Teach? THE PLAN OUR MISSION To ensure that today s children are the MANY new stamp collectors of tomorrow Expose MANY children to stamps today Through school teachers: - Lesson Plans -StampVentures Classroom Learning Center - Worksheets so that those with the gene (maybe 5%) get connected with us and philately and are mentored in the hobby Through YSCA* APS youth club - Task cards - Access to APS/NPM websites - Free stamps through the YSCA club - APS Mentoring * Young Stamp Collectors of America 2

3 The Stamps Teach program is about reaching MANY kids through their teachers in the classroom. 4 2) Three ST Products in the APS Website 1 Lesson Plans: Complete downloadable lesson or set of lessons to cover a school topic. We provide the stamps. 2 Worksheets: Short downloadable exercises to support the teacher s own lessons. We provide the stamps. Teacher provides a small table and we provide 1) colorful posters to set up in the space, 2) a container full of stamps that we will replenish at teacher s request 3) downloadable task-cards (by subject) with individual activities to keep children actively engaged while teacher is busy working with other children. 4

5 Downloadable Lesson Plans Lewis and Clark: Reasons for the Expedition Grades 3 to 5 Standards National Council for the Social Studies Standards: Time, Continuity, and Change Students will understand Key people, events, and places associated with the history of the community, nation, and world. Goal: Students will demonstrate knowledge of Thomas Jefferson s plan for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Objectives: Students will Be introduced to Lewis and Clark s expedition, Familiarize themselves with some of the goals of the Corps of Discovery. Set Induction Students share what they think of when they hear the word expedition. Invite discussion about President Thomas Jefferson. Show pictures or take a virtual tour of the entrance hall of Monticello and talk about what things he might have been interested in. 13 Selected Comments from Teachers Lesson Plans - Two of my students who normally 'tune out', were the first to complete the assignment and proudly showed their work to the rest of the class. - The kids had loads of funs looking through the stamps! Lesson fit nicely with a unit I was already doing on the Solar System - The first through fifth grade children were fully engaged and even excited to learn about the first presidents. The first and second graders even asked to participate with the other students when they were putting the index cards in order - About a week later, one child encountered a question about symmetry on a practice test and said "I know that from stamp class!" That was great. 13

15 Work sheet Worksheets Selected Comments from Teachers - I chose this activity because the students have been working on adding three numbers in math class. In addition, the students were given the opportunity to learn and practice math in a new way. They were so excited to look at the stamps. - I used many of the worksheets (diving for nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, 4 seasons, simple machines, 5 senses, addition and subtraction) and the children enjoyed all of them. They really liked looking for stamps that applied to the concept - The students were so interested in the assortment of stamps, colors, countries, currencies, etc. - The students were so engaged in this activity. They hunted for the specific kind of number that they wanted to use while also looking for a 'cool' stamp to glue on their paper. - My children asked me every day if we were going to do the stamp activity. 15

17 SV Task card Task Cards Selected Comments from Teachers - Had the task cards set up in a section of my classroom as a center. The students chose this task card freely, without any encouragement from me. This shows that this is a topic that they are interested in and that they wanted to complete - The children had a great time learning geography skills and finding the correct information using almanacs and maps - An excitement for learning when before it was dreaded (Social Studies) - It made all the difference. Students wanted to take them home with them. They were so eager to look through their choices. They had to be problem solvers and independent to find what they needed. They were cooperative and finding stamps for one another 17
