5 Reading Test The reading booklet will contain three or four texts. The least demanding text will come first, with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty. Children will have a total of one hour to read the texts and complete the questions at their own pace (say, 10 mins reading then 50 mins to answer the questions, but they can decide). The reading answer booklet will comprise approximately 35 to 40 questions (totalling 50 marks). The questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); shorter, open response items; and longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding. Questions are worth 1, 2 or 3 marks.

6 Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test has two components, worth a total of 70 marks: 1. a booklet of short-answer questions of 45 minutes 2. An untimed spelling task that takes approximately 15 minutes Paper 1, the short-answer questions, consists of between 40 and 50 questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Each question is worth one or two marks with a total for the paper of 50 marks. The questions are: selected response items (such as multiple choice questions) or short, open response items, in which children may have to write a word, a few words or a sentence. Paper 2, the spelling task, consists of 20 sentences, which are read aloud by the test administrator. Each sentence has a word missing which the child must complete. The task is worth a total of 20 marks.

7 Maths Tests The mathematics test consists of: One arithmetic paper lasting 45 minutes and worth 40 marks Two reasoning papers, lasting 30 minutes worth 20 marks each. Children s marks from all three tests are aggregated to calculate their overall mathematics score and level

8 Teacher Assessment Part of teaching and learning in the classroom Takes account of achievement in a range of contexts including observation and discussion. Final decisions made in June Awarded in English, Mathematics and Science Reported at end of year and also passed on to secondary schools

10 Range of Results Scaled scores, where a score of 100 and above means that age=related expectations have been met D = disapplied WTS = working towards age-related expectations HNM = has not met standard (just below) EXP = working at expectation GDS = working at higher level (i.e. score 110+) A = absent and no opportunity to sit the test. EXP is the expected level for the end of key stage 2
