1 CHV2O Civics Think Globally Act Locally The Global Citizen: Summative Assignment Over: You are to pick a worldwide problem that interests you. You will then find a way to inform the public about the problem (a Creative Assignment), write a person, group or association that is involved with the issue (Letter Assignment), and participate in a mock Global debate on your cause (Oral Presentation). This assignment will count for 30% of your final mark. It is broken down into 3 components (with each part counting for 10%): a) Creative Assignment (Poster, Stamp, Video, etc.) b) Written Letter c) Oral Presentation/Debate Due Dates: The Creative Assignment and the Letter must be handed in no later than for final evaluation. You may hand them in earlier if you wish. They will not be accepted after the final due date. The Oral Presentation will take place on. There will be no make up date. Skills involved: The main skills you will be expected to demonstrate are: 1) the ability to conduct independent research using many sources 2) problem-solving and sound solution-making 3) effective and persuasive communication These are all skills that we have practiced during this course. You should now think of this as an opportunity for you to demonstrate everything you have worked so hard on. Words of Wisdom: You will be required to complete most of these activities at school; this includes research and the making of the final product. Be prepared to work everyday that you are given. Bring all your necessary materials, including any art supplies, research materials, books, etc. that you need. Absenteeism during this time could significantly hurt your final evaluation. 6 Think Globally, Act Locally Task Descriptions: Creative Visual Assignment Acceptable Formats: Poster, Stamp, PowerPoint Presentation, Brochure, Infomercial (or any other idea that is pre-approved by the teacher) Expectation: a professional display of a strong message that informs and educates the audience about a particular global concern Letter Assignment Acceptable Formats: typed formal letter, in proper format of between 300 and 600 words or an sent to an actual address of at least 300 to 600 words (with a corresponding copy forwarded to the teacher). Expectation: a persuasive letter that outlines the global concern, suggests possible realistic solutions, and indicates courses of action that need to be taken. Students deciding to do the project as an are required to forward a copy of the to: worldhistorygeek@hotmail.com Oral Presentation/Debate Acceptable Formats: short 2 minute presentation to the mock United Nations, followed by participation in a debate on the allocation of funds towards causes deemed to be the most important globally Expectation: a persuasive presentation that outlines the necessity of a worldwide reaction to the issue, suggests plans of action to help solve the issue, and participation in a debate that defends the issue s global importance. For this activity, participants will participate in a mock United Nations Assembly Debate on the allocation of $500 million dollars to help combat the issues of global concern. Participants will be expected to not only make a brief presentation on their issue (using whatever props, visuals, etc. they deem necessary), but also to actively participate in a debate on how much money should be allocated to their cause. It is highly recommend that the research into the topic should also focus on the amount of money needed to help fix the issue.
