1 Cambridge Schools Conference Learning and achievement for all Cambridge 2017 Cambridge Schools Conference breakout sessions The conference breakout sessions offer you the opportunity to explore new ideas, ask questions and share best practice. You will have the opportunity to attend four breakout sessions over the two conference days. Breakout sessions 1 12 and 20 have been developed to allow you to explore the conference theme Learning and achievement for all. Breakouts will allow you to gain greater insight into Cambridge teaching and learning support. 1. Developing the Cambridge Learner Attributes Dr Tristian Stobie, Director, Education This session will introduce a new guide that is available to schools on supporting the learner attributes. Key ideas and concepts will be described and their consequences explored. Participants will have the opportunity to consider how they might use the guide and make recommendations to Cambridge for further support. 2. Developing metacognition in students Lee Davis, Deputy Director, Education and Sarah Talbot, Education Officer This session will consider the concept and practice of metacognition in learning how to learn, which is fundamental to helping students overcome any cognitive barriers to learning. What can schools and individual teachers do in practice to make this a reality? And what impact does it have on improving student outcomes? This session will help participants answer these questions. 3. How do I create the right classroom conditions for effective learning? Anna Smith, Education Manager and Julie Reid, Education Officer Creating the right conditions in the classroom is a simple but powerful tool to enhance learning. In this session we will explore practical techniques to ensure that all students are learning effectively. These will include making the best use of seating plans and groupings, using effective questioning methods to encourage all learners, and how to set appropriate expectations. 4. Understanding and supporting cognition in the classroom Dr Duncan Astle and Dr Andrea Greve (Keynote Speaker 2) In this workshop, which follows Keynote 2 in the conference programme, we focus on two particular aspects of memory. The first is on identifying children with common short-term memory (sometimes specifically called working memory) difficulties, establishing their characteristics, and outlining ways of structuring classroom learning to ensure that these Cambridge Schools Conference breakout sessions 1

2 differences do not constrain a child s progress. The second focus is on long-term memory and consolidation. We will elaborate on principles of how new knowledge structures are formed and identify ways of enhancing the retention and integration of new information over the long term. Our aim throughout this workshop is to take principles from cognitive psychology and neuroscience and apply them to real learning scenarios. 5. Mind mapping: For recall, understanding and creativity Rachel West, Education Officer Harness the power of cognitive science to help your learners make the most of the information they encounter. Mind maps are a practical graphic organisation tool. They can be used to memorise and deepen understanding of any subject, plan essays and projects and support creative thinking in the classroom. Join us in this session to learn more and take away some practical ideas. 6. Scaffolding learning for digitally-astute students in English-medium education Dr David Marsh (Keynote Speaker 3) In this session, our keynote speaker will explore with you teaching methods which best complement the learning preferences and needs of young people who experience both bilingual education and digital lifestyles. He will build on what he will cover in his presentation and facilitate your thinking about practical solutions for learning and teaching. 7. Developing English through the Cambridge 5-14 curriculum Lauren Harris, Development Manager, and Steve Crombie, Product Manager, English Many Cambridge Primary and Secondary 1 learners intend to study Cambridge IGCSEs through English, regardless of whether English is their first language. In this session we will discuss the different needs of first language speakers and language learners and how these needs are met in the design of the Cambridge Primary and Secondary 1 programme for English and English as a Second Language. We will look at some principles of language awareness and how teachers of all Primary and Secondary 1 subjects can support English development. 8. Practical approaches to differentiation Paul Ellis, Head of Teaching & Learning, and Sarah Turner, Education division Discover some of the many, quick and simple, differentiated activities you can bring into your classroom, to support the progress of learners facing learning differences, difficulties and disabilities. In this session we will talk about how to identify strengths and needs, and how to apply some specific teaching approaches which will accommodate students additional requirements. 9. Inclusion through listening teaching the hard to teach Dawn Harris, Education Consultant and Cambridge Trainer Discover how to include those who are sometimes hard to teach by listening and involving learners in your classroom planning. In this session we will explore solution-focussed Cambridge Schools Conference breakout sessions 2

3 learning conversations and personalised learner centred planning. The objective is that you will leave with a way forward to achieving greater progress for those we find most challenging. 10. Assessment for learning and achievement Roddy Gillespie, Director, Assessment This session offers an overview of Cambridge s assessment philosophy, standards and how our end-to-end processes and procedures ensure the robust delivery of each examination series, and will also cover why Cambridge qualifications are recognised by the world s best universities. 11. How the assessment of coursework can contribute to learner development Michael Thomas, Product Manager, Arts & Languages This presentation will look at the ways in which coursework is integrated into examined assessments in different subject areas, exploring its value in developing skills in learners and building confidence. We will look at the usefulness of assessment objectives and criteria in relation to coursework both as formative and summative assessment and how discussion of assessments in the classroom can feed back into increased student selfawareness. We will explore how the relationship between teacher-led and peer assessment in the early stages of coursework development enables learners to have greater personal engagement with the process and to identify skills necessary for success. 12. Mathematics for all Alex Bellos (Keynote Speaker 4) and Charlie Gilderdale (NRICH Maths) Join Alex and Charlie to work on some of their favourite mathematical problems and then take the activities back to school to share with colleagues and students. Come prepared to explore, discuss, conjecture and generalise, and discover that everyone can think mathematically. Little prior knowledge of mathematics will be required. 13. Deep learning and digital resourcing how to enhance your teaching with interactive resources David Harrison, Development Manager Discover how new technology can support teachers at to deliver engaging and fulfilling lessons for all Cambridge learners, helping them to develop a lasting passion for learning whatever the circumstances. See how Cambridge is supporting teachers to develop their learners skills in science and other subjects. This forum will include opportunities to try out teaching resources and consider learning approaches to develop learners skills in the context of a Cambridge curriculum. 14. Using data at Primary and Secondary 1 Dr Fiona Jackson, Development Manager, and Joanna Rickwood, Delivery Lead Cambridge creates assessments that are fully aligned with our curriculum and taken by learners worldwide. Therefore, the data from assessments can be used to answer important Cambridge Schools Conference breakout sessions 3

4 questions for learners (e.g. What are my strengths and weaknesses? What do I need to do to improve?), teachers (e.g. How can improve my teaching plan for this term? Next year?), school leaders (e.g. How do we compare to other schools? Where would training have the biggest impact) and parents (How can I help my son/daughter to make progress?). In this session we will look at the tools that Cambridge provides to help use assessment data effectively and discuss how to use these to promote achievement for all learners. 15. Cambridge Global Perspectives launching the new skills based learning programme for Primary and Lower Secondary Paul Bullen-Smith, Head of Cambridge Global Perspectives and pilot school teachers Our cross curricular skills based Global Perspectives programme at ages 5-14 launches internationally in June 2018, after a co-creation pilot involving schools from around the world. This innovative new programme is made up of Challenges, and two summative Checkpoint tests at Stages 6 and 9. We will bring the programme to life with classroom case studies from teachers involved in the pilot over the last 18 months, focussed on how they introduced and implemented the programme and on the educational impact on their students learning. 16. How do you talk about Cambridge programmes and qualifications to parents? Cambridge staff This session will explore how you talk about Cambridge programmes and qualifications to parents and other stakeholders. It will include sharing ideas and best practice and the support that is available from Cambridge. 17. Applying to University with Cambridge International Examinations qualifications Kevin Ebenezer, Recognitions Manager, UK In this session, we will present key information on how to best support students who apply universities and colleges with Cambridge International AS and A levels and Cambridge IGCSEs. We will also highlight the findings of UK NARIC s independent evaluation and benchmarking of Cambridge qualifications and how we have responded to the reforms in the UK. This session will be particularly relevant to those who advise students with Cambridge qualifications. In addition Claire Edge, International Student Recruitment Manager, will briefly describe the application and selection process of the University of Cambridge 18. Cambridge standards for schools evaluation Dr Gerard Calnin, University of Melbourne, Graduate School of Education Over the past year, Cambridge has been working with a number of pilot centres to develop a set of evaluation standards against which schools can measure themselves for wholeschool improvement and planning purposes. This session will outline the Cambridge approach to school improvement, introducing participants to the standards, how they can be evaluated by key stakeholders, and then reported on to senior management. The session is primarily aimed at school leadership. Cambridge Schools Conference breakout sessions 4

5 19. Support for Cambridge exams officers Cambridge staff Exams officers play a key part in the continuing success of Cambridge schools around the world. We provide comprehensive support and training on all aspects of the Cambridge exams officer role. During this session we will give an overview of the resources we provide and answer any questions you may have. This is also an opportunity for you to let us know how we can better support our exams officers. 20. Active questioning: Active learning English; Science Helen Rees-Bidder (Day 1; English) Dr Mark Winterbottom (Day 2; Science) Effective questioning engages all students in the learning process, helps teachers to check understanding and challenges learners thinking. This session will focus on how teachers can use questioning strategies and feedback to improve student achievement. This session will be led by one of the authors of a new series of subject specific books that are the result of close collaboration between Cambridge University Press and Cambridge International Examinations. This new series is designed to supplement the learning of international teachers and provide practical resources for lesson planning and teaching that help put theory into context.
