1 IB Math 12 (SL 2) Course Syllabus Teacher: Mrs. Y. Oygenblik Welcome to the IB Math 12 course! It is the second year of a two-year IB Math SL course. This course allows the student to develop an understanding of the concepts of calculus, which is the mathematics of change and motion. Calculus links algebra, geometry and trigonometry together into a new and unified mathematical structure. It is the language used in modern science, engineering and technology expressing laws in precise mathematical terms. This course is designed for students to model a physical situation with a function, analyze the model with the aid of technology, and determine the reasonableness of their solutions. It is concentrated on exploration of concepts of differential and integral calculus. Students will discover and develop a thorough understanding and appreciation of calculus by investigating and applying those concepts to real life problems. This second year of a two-year IB Math SL course includes an Exploration Paper on the topic of your choice (internal assessment) and two IB Assessment papers (external assessment). Required Materials for the course: Textbook: Larson, Ron. Applied Calculus for the Life and Social Sciences. Boston New York: Houghton Mifflin Hartcourt Publishing Co., ISBN X 3-ring binder, loose 3-hole punched filler sheets (lined and graph paper) for the HOMEWORK quizzes, and provided supplemental handouts. Composition notebook* for the class notes only, not mandatory. Past assignments and notes from the previous class. Folder*, pen, pencil, a ruler, dry-erase marker with the eraser-cap*. Graphing calculator TI-84 or latest is required. These materials must be brought to class every day. Students unprepared will be penalized on their effort/participation/homework grade. You will receive a textbook at the beginning of this year. You are responsible for your book and must return it at the end of this year in the same condition you have received it.* Grading Policy (as per Biotechnology High School and MCVSD Academies Regulations): The course grade is calculated based on the following: Primary Assessments (Including, but not limited to Tests, Projects, Problem Sets, Internal Assessment) 60% Secondary Assessments (Including, but not limited to Quizzes, Graded Homework, Problems Sets, Group work, Practice IB problems) 30% Daily Assessments (Including, but not limited to Daily Homework, Daily Classwork, Participation) 10% 1

2 A typical marking period grade will be computed:.6 x (primary assessment points) +.3 x (secondary assessments points) +.1 x (other assessment points) = grade Procedure employed in dealing with late work, incomplete work and opportunities for extra credit (if any): Late work-10% per calendar day for all assignments Extra Credit- maximum of 2% of the final grade IB Assessment: Students (you) will complete an external and an internal IB assessment for this course. The external assessment is a three-hour written exam which includes 2 papers. Each paper will consist of short answer and extended response questions. All questions are based on the Mathematics SL Syllabus. The internal assessment is a written paper that explores the mathematics behind a topic of personal interest. This is to demonstrate your ability to apply and transfer the skills you have learned to different situations and other areas of knowledge. This paper will be completed during the second year of IB Mathematics SL. External Assessment: 80% Paper 1 40% Paper 2 40% Exploration 20% Tests/Problem Sets: There will be 3 primary assessments in each marking period, in the form of a test or a problem set. Tests may cover entire chapters or a group of sections within a chapter. Majority of the tests will be in IB format questions. Tests are comprehensive, that is, they will require skills learned previously. Missed tests must be taken on the day you return to school*. No tests will be returned to students until all students have taken that test. A test cannot be retaken to improve your grade. Use of computers: In this course, we will use computers occasionally. When you are using computers, my expectation is that you are only using software that I have specified. If you are found to be using the computers for any other purpose, your technology privileges will be revoked. In the event that this happens, you will be responsible for completing assignments on paper and turning them in on time. Quizzes: Quizzes may be announced (schedule is posted on the Calendar of Assessments page Wiki) or unannounced, may occur on a weekly or biweekly basis. They will cover material learned in previous classes. Missed quizzes must be taken on the day you return to school*. A quiz cannot be retaken to improve your grade. 2

3 Homework: Homework will be checked in class, collected on random basis graded on completion and effort, and returned to students. It must be completed and handed in on time; there will be no complete credit given for the late homework as per MCVSD policy. It is strongly recommended to complete ALL homework assignments ON TIME as 1) it is crucial in understanding the new material, 2) some of the questions may appear on the upcoming tests and quizzes. All of the assignments, dates of the quizzes and tests, as well as additional useful formulas and websites, will be posted on the Mrs. Oygenblik s Friendlymath website at therefore none of the excuses for not writing down or doing a wrong assignment work will be honored. Make Up Policy: Students who are absent are expected to hand in makeup work on the day they return to class. Students who miss a test or a quiz will be scheduled to take it on the day they return to school*. Teacher Detention Policy: Teacher-detention may be assigned as a disciplinary action. Parent/guardian will be notified. If a student misses teacher detention, the Administration Office will be notified and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. Bathroom/Hall Passes: No requests will be honored 5 minutes before or after bells. Students are expected to spend no more than 5 minutes outside of the classroom. Academic Integrity: Cheating and plagiarism WILL NOT be tolerated. Actions will be taken in accordance with MCVSD Academic Integrity & Honors Code. COMMON FORMS OF PLAGIARISM Buying a paper; having someone else write your paper; using someone else s paper, however altered. Quoting without acknowledging the exact words of another person. Paraphrasing a text closely (changing only words and syntax) without acknowledgement; summarizing the ideas (a shortened paraphrase) without acknowledgement; confusing paraphrase and quotation. Misusing quotation marks, note numbers, and parenthetical citations, and thereby implying that portions of a paper are yours when they are not. Cheating on examinations or quizzes. Unauthorized collaboration on assignments, quizzes, or exams, including unauthorized dissemination of quiz, test or exam content to other students. Multiple submissions of the student s work without the teachers express consent, including resubmitting previously completed assignments or handing in work prepared for or in other classes. Misusing resources for teaching and learning, including the unauthorized use of teachers editions of textbooks, or the use of stolen exams or quizzes. Falsifying information, forgery, bribery, and any other acts intended to deceive others about one s work. 3

4 Students who have violated our guidelines for academic integrity, and who have chosen to participate in academically dishonest behavior as described above, will a receive a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz or test, have a disciplinary report filed in the student s record, and attend a conference with parents present; repeated violations will be handled on a case by case basis; for all incidences, the National Honor Society will be notified. Teacher Consultations: Teacher s help will be offered at least one day a week during lunch; the schedule is posted on my Wiki, outside of the classroom (218) and my office (207A). Please meet with me at listed times for extra help and to discuss your progress in class. DO NOT wait until the day before a test to ask questions! Please note that my schedule for extra help does NOT revolve around your club schedule if there is a conflict, academics should come first. I am also available after school by appointment.
