2 COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES: Catalog Description Computer-Aided Design for civil engineering applications. The course covers the fundamentals and application of graphical communication and Computer Aided Design (AutoCAD ) for supporting engineering design, solving engineering problems, and communicating information and solutions. Course Goals This course will introduce the fundamentals of graphical communication, engineering design and computer-aided design (CAD) and their application in civil engineering practice. Students will be prepared with the technical skills to select and efficiently use CAD tools for design, analysis, and communication in their future studies and employment in civil engineering. Learning Objectives This course is one of many that you take towards your degree in Civil engineering. Each course emphasizes particular program outcomes. Altogether, program outcomes are intended to provide a foundation for your career. Although other outcomes may be related to this class, this course has an emphasis on the following program outcomes. Outcome 8: Organize and deliver effective verbal, written and graphical communication a. Describe the role of graphical communication in the engineering design process. b. Identify, describe and apply the proper use of concepts, standards, and tools for graphical communication in the interpretation and creation of engineering drawings to communicate spatial design information. c. Comprehend and create technical drawings, sketches and virtual models. Outcome 9: Apply relevant techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools to solve a simple problem a. Describe and apply the engineering design process to identify and define problems to be solved. b. Apply CAD to assist in all applicable steps of the engineering design process. c. Analyze and Solve spatial problems using the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2014 software application, which is used extensively in civil engineering education and practice. Instructional Methods The course will be a combination of lectures (2 per week) and interactive computer instruction/lab (1 per week). There will be lab exercises, homework assignments, quizzes, and practical and written exams (Midterm & Final). Students will produce a homework portfolio and participate in a group design project. Students may collaborate on homework assignments, but must submit their INDIVIDUAL WORK and be capable of performing all applicable components of each assignment. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Please read the definitions of cheating and plagiarism from SDSU s Senate Policies as well as the policies for enforcing academic and punitive sanctions in the event of cheating or plagiarism (go to and scroll to page 19). 3 COURSE POLICIES AND GRADING: General You are expected to be prepared for class. This means completing all assignments and any suggested reading before class. You are responsible for everything contained in the lectures, reading assignments, lab exercises, homework assignments, handouts, and class announcements. Information supplementing or modifying information contained in this syllabus will be announced in class and posted on Blackboard. It is expected that you will conduct yourself in a courteous, professional, and ethical manner at all times. Cell Phones and Computer Use Cell phones must be TURNED OFF and PUT AWAY during class and exams. You will be excused from class or receive an F on an exam in progress if this policy is violated. During the sessions in the computer lab, computer use is limited to class material. Browsing the web, checking , using social media, or doing computer work not related to the class is NOT ALLOWED. You will be asked to leave class if this policy is violated. Grading Attendance/Quizzes... 10% Homework Portfolio... 15% Design Project... 5% Practical Exams (2)... 30% Midterm Exam... 20% Final Exam... 20% Grade Guidelines Minimum % Letter Grade Minimum % Letter Grade 93% A 77% C+ 90% A- 73% C 87% B+ 70% C- 83% B 60% D 80% B- 0% F Homework Portfolio Exercises will be given during lab sessions and completed as homework. The exercises are designed to facilitate class discussion and build skills that can only be improved by practice. Thus it is critical that all exercises are completed by the assigned date (generally the beginning of the next lab session). All work is to be kept in a Portfolio (three-ring binder) for the class that should be brought to every lab session to receive credit. Late work will not be accepted. Assignments are to be done individually; students may discuss assignments but not copy solutions. Collaboration is encouraged, but copied homework will receive a grade of zero. Each student is expected to understand and be able to explain their own work. Assignments will be graded on completeness, correctness, effort and presentation. CIVE 121 Syllabus - 3 -

4 Quizzes There will be quizzes throughout the semester during lab sessions to monitor attendance and check your progress. There will also be quizzes and assignments during lecture which must be included in your portfolio. Quizzes will cover material from class as well as assigned readings. There will be no makeup quizzes. Exams There will be two practical exams (using AutoCAD ) and a conceptual midterm during the semester to check your progress. The final conceptual exam will be comprehensive. You will be responsible for everything in the readings, lectures, class notes, exercises, and handouts. The final exam will be given during your last lab session. There will be no makeup exams. Obtaining an Engineering Computer Account SDSU maintains computer labs with PC s with AutoCAD software in E-221 and PS-231. E-221 is a teaching lab and is not available to students outside of class hours. Students will be provided with a 6-digit door code to access PS-231. You MUST have an engineering computer account to be enrolled in this course. To get a computer account, log on to the lab computers using the temporary student username (student) and password (Spring2014) on the Engineering2 domain. Fill out the screen that pops-up. Your username and password will be displayed on the screen and ed to you within 72 hours. All students must have accounts by Monday, February 3. Communication from the Instructor The instructor will send s with announcements or post announcements/addendums/ corrections on Blackboard. Please check both regularly. This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. CIVE 121 Syllabus - 4 -
