Specific approaches to applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), subsidized by Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and remote sensing, to problems in natural resource analysis. Course corequisite required GIS 390L. Prerequisite course required GIS. Program Learning Outcomes: Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, querying, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced data. It has become commonplace in a multitude of disciplines. This class outlines the principles of GIS and is designed to provide basic knowledge of GIS theory and application. Issues of data acquisition and the use of GIS for real-world applications are emphasized. GIS 390 is one of the core courses required of all Forestry, Environmental Science, and Spatial Science majors, and thus competency is required. The course is designed to address the Program Learning Outcomes in understanding the competency of ecology, biology, policy, economics, and administration of forestry and environmental science at intermediate level, as well as understanding the competency of resource measurement, management and oral and written communication skills at advanced level. Student Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate competency in the fundamentals of GIS in natural resource management. They will learn not only the most common GIS software but also the necessary background to understand how the software package works. As the semester develops, students will understand basic concepts and principles of GIS, apply spatial analytical tools to address questions and solve problems in natural resources. They will also understand professional ethics and demonstrate competency in oral and written communication skills through project preparation and presentation. Textbooks: 1

2 Required: Wing, M. G. and Bettinger, P. Geographic Information Systems: Applications in Natural Resource Management, nd Edition, Oxford, ISBN Recommended: Ormsby, T. et al. Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop, 3rd Edition, updated for ArcGIS 10. ESRI Press, ISBN Software: ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 10 with ArcInfo Workstation license. Lecture Assignments: Ten lecture assignments will be given throughout the semester. The assignments will be given in class and should be submitted in electronic format onto mycourses/blackboard. When uploading assignments, the name of the student s file should include the student s first name initial and last name at the end following an underscore, e.g. assignment1_ihung.doc. Failure to following this filename convention will result in penalty on the grade. A corrected version of assignment can be resubmitted by the deadline. However, no late submission will be accepted. Important information will also be announced through the in mycourses/blackboard specific to this class. It is the student s responsibility to check his/her of this class on a regular basis. Laboratory: Step-by-step guidance will be offered and lab assignments will be given during lab sessions. Please refer to the lab syllabus. The student is required to follow the GIS Lab User Account Policy. Failing to do that will result in reduction of the overall grade of this class. If there is any issue regarding the network connection other than regular lab works, please contact the GIS Lab Administrator via GISLAB@sfasu.edu. Toward the end of the semester, the student will be completing a GIS project and present it to the class. Students will learn to interact with each other with professional communication skills and ethics. Examinations: Five to eight quizzes will be given randomly during lectures throughout the semester. Two tests will be given during the semester and a final exam will be given at the end of the semester. Grading Policy: 0% Laboratory 0% Lecture Assignments 5% Quizzes 0% Tests % Final Exam A: 90+ % B: 0-9% C: 0-9% D: 0-9% F: < 0%

3 Attendance Policy: According to the University s policy, regular and punctual attendance is expected at all classes, laboratories, and other activities for which a student is registered. Even though attendance is not a factor for the course grades, accurate attendance will be recorded. When an absence is unavoidable, make sure you catch up on what was missed. If a student has excessive absences, the instructor reserves the right not to give individual tutoring, special consideration regarding make-up work, or other help the student needs because of missing class. Plan your time as best as possible and make the commitment to spend the amount of time needed for you to be successful. Acceptable Student Behavior: Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program (see the Student Conduct Code, policy D-3.1). Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be asked to leave class and may be subject to judicial, academic or other penalties. This prohibition applies to all instructional forums, including electronic, classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The instructor shall have full discretion over what behavior is appropriate/inappropriate in the classroom. Students who do not attend class regularly or who perform poorly on class projects/exams may be referred to the Early Alert Program. This program provides students with recommendations for resources or other assistance that is available to help SFA students succeed. Academic Integrity (A-9.1): It is the instructor s hope that academic dishonesty will not be a problem in this class. However, academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; () the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; () submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the words or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit. 4 Withheld Grades Semester Grades Policy (A-5): Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. Students with Disabilities: To obtain disability related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, and Room 35, -0 / -100 (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations. For additional information, go to Last Words: Learning GIS is fun, but it is time consuming. Time management is critically important for this class. Be prepared for long hours of hard work. You are supposed to get frustrated before you finally taste the fruit. Expect yourself becoming a GIS specialist beyond an operator. Always THINK critically when you push buttons and build yourself a firm foundation of GIS, which you might find useful some day.
