1 Eton School After-School Classes 2017 Winter Guide
2 After-School Winter Classes January 9 to March 24, 2017 As the Fall session of the after-school classes comes to an end, we are pleased to announce our offerings for the Winter. Many of the classes offered in the fall are retuning with a few new classes e.g. Gymnastics, French, and Museo Art. Although most classes are 8 weeks in duration, Monday and Friday classes are only seven weeks while French takes place for 16 weeks. Registration Policy Online (including payment) via Eton School s website. Opens Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 7:00 a.m. Offered on a first come, first served basis. Closes when a class and wait list is full or on December 16. Automatic sent confirming placement upon completions of registration and payment. Wait lists are created for all full classes in the order received. Open spots in classes are filled from the wait list in the order received. If registration is not completed within the stated time frame, the spot passes to the next person on the wait list. 4 Gymnastics presented by My Gym Children s Fitness Center Grades P3 and P4 Thursdays (Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16; Mar. 2, 23) Time: 3:15-4:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 10 My Gym Children s Fitness Center brings its Gymnastics program to Eton School. Children have fun as they learn beginning gymnastics, tumbling, sports, relays, games, and overall physical fitness activities while building strength, balance, agility, flexibility and coordination during this 45-minute high energy class. The highly trained My Gym staff instill a positive, supportive, and noncompetitive atmosphere where children thrive and they offer a curriculum that changes weekly so students can advance to a new skill. My Gym s goal is to promote a life-long love of gymnastics and physical fitness! Pre-elementary Classes International Dance Grades P3 and P4 Tuesdays (Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb. 7, 14, 28; Mar. 21) Time: 3:15-4:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 Each class studies movement and dance from different cultures around the world. Students develop their flexibility and grow in their own artistic ability as they create dance performances. Boys and girls are welcome to join! This is the seventh year that Ms. Alina Spektor is offering classes at Eton School. Creative Dance, movement, music and performing arts have been her passion for fifteen years. Ballet (7 weeks) Grades P3, P4 and K Mondays (Jan. 9, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; Mar. 20) Time: 3:15-3:45 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 11 Ballet classes discipline the body and spirit, help one to find individual style, as well as a love and understanding of one s body movements. The young students learn to express feelings, strengthen the body, and improve sense of grace. This class is taught by Yanina Mikhaylyuk, Founding Artistic Director of the Academy of Russian Classical Ballet in Redmond. Miss Yanina is a professional ballet instructor who graduated with a Masters from St. Petersburg Art University. 5 Cooking Grades P3, P4 and K Time: 3:20-4:30 p.m. Cost: $ plus $10.00 for an apron (optional) Number of Students: 9* This is a hands-on cooking class. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to expand their palate and open up the food frontier. Students learn basic cooking techniques and how to make healthy and delicious food. Please identify on the registration form if your child has any food allergies or restrictions such as halal, vegan or vegetarian. If you wish to purchase an optional apron for this class, please the instructor, Awring Mahmud at awringh@hotmail.com. *This class is a multi-grade class that combines with the Cooking for Grade 1, 2, and 3 (9 students) and meets in the Mezzo Building Kitchen. Nature Storytelling for Children (7 weeks) Grades P3, P4 and K Mondays (Jan. 9, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; Mar 20) Time: 3:15-4:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 This is a storytelling and science class that allows children to explore their natural world. Each week focuses on a different plant or animal from the Northwest. The class begins with a spoken story, usually from a Native American Nation. Then two or three books, both fiction and nonfiction, are read aloud. Short science lessons about the plant or animal being studied that week are presented between stories. Through storytelling, music, movement, and science, students learn to connect with and understand our northwest plants and animals, which often live in our own backyards. At the end of each class, students receive a fact sheet from the lesson to take home and share with their family what they have learned. Their program develops the whole person, mentally and physically, resulting in greater self-confidence and self-discipline. The format of each class varies considerably to keep students motivated and focused. Classes include a warm-up with endurance and strengthening exercises followed by stretching, karate techniques, and then the focus activity of the day. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, which provides students with goals to work towards and recognition of their accomplishments. Karate-X classes are dynamic, focused, and tons of fun, with instructors who know how to work with students! *This class combines with the Karate (New Students Only) group for a total of 18 students. 7 Little Coders Grade K Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 9* Jump start your child s STEAM education with Coding with Kids Academy s Little Coders class! Students develop computational thinking skills and build their own creative programs. Coding with Kids Academy s curriculum combines a blend of on-screen and off-screen fun activities to keep students engaged and excited about coding. This class gives students a strong foundation of coding basics, such as loops and conditionals, that can be built upon in our other classes. Aspiring Authors Time: 3:20-4:50 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 Grasshopper Enrichment s more popular enrichment education program, Aspiring Authors, is offered this Winter at Eton School. Using a unique two brain approach in a positive and friendly environment, students are inspired to write and publish their own book. During this fun and challenging eight week adventure, each student becomes an author, editor, and artist hired by the publishing company to create masterpieces. As a company, the class assembles and binds the books creating professional results.* Students learn how to use the elements of story building to captivate their readers and enhance their illustrations to make their words come alive. Their books will be a treasure to cherish. A culminating activity is scheduled with parents and friends to Celebrate the Authors. Lower Elementary Classes *Time is provided during the class to write and illustrate their books. Professional results, however, require additional homework as each student continues to work to complete a rough draft, to edit for a final draft, and to finish illustrations. 8 Lower Elementary Classes 8 Beginner Coding Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 16 Does your child play games and wonder how they are created? Does your child like to build his/her own computer programs? Have your child learn how at Coding with Kids Academy! Students are introduced to the core concepts of computer programming including loops, conditionals, and variables. Using the Scratch development environment, they learn to create programs such as simple games, animations, and interactive stories. With a new projects each week, they are able to express creativity and advance as a coder! The progressive curriculum allows them to move to the next level after just 1-2 classes. Chess Thursdays (Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16; Mar. 2, 23) Time: 3:20-4:05 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 14 Come study and play chess with five-time Washington State champion, Slava Mikhailuk. During the lessons, students learn the basics of the game, solve puzzles, and play chess with each other and the teacher. The class covers important topics like basic rules of the game, check and checkmate, and basic chess strategies such as capturing and developing pieces. Each lesson begins with a story about the Northwest plant or animal being studied that day. This story is generally of Native American origin. Students then receive an interactive lesson about the plant or animal of the day. Often, physical items or sounds found in the plant or animal s habitat are explored. This allows students to learn how to locate and identify living things in the Northwest, discover their unique characteristics, and understand their importance to us. The class includes outdoor exploratory time to enhance a personal connection with the subject of the day. Students use clues from the lesson to discover whether the plant or animal of the day is living on school grounds. Habitat is created to help the students experience what it might be like to be the plant or animal being studied. At the end of each class, students receive a fact sheet from the lesson to take home and share with their family what they have learned. Winter After-School Classes Guide Eton School
9 Museo Art Thursdays (Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16; Mar. 2, 23) Time: 3:20-4:35 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 18 Museo Art Academy brings its Journey with the Masters Program to Eton School this Winter. Students explore the work of several master artists, such as Chagall, Cezanne, O Keeffe, as they learn to express their own individual creativity. They paint, draw, sculpt, and make collages while developing skills and learning proper use and care of the tools and materials. Lessons and projects emphasize the process of art production, stimulate creativity, and develop fine motor skills. Soccer (7 weeks) Fridays (Jan. 20, 27; Feb. 3, 10, 17; Mar. 3, 24) Time: 3:20-4:30 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 Soccer is great exercise and also a universally fun activity. Playing soccer allows students to learn discipline and how to get along with others. Both girls and boys can enjoy the benefits of soccer and can get into shape by increasing their cardiovascular capability as well as increase their muscular development and strength. Playing soccer is a way to make friends and being involved in a team sport promotes self-esteem and builds character. The format of each soccer class includes learning technical skills, improving physical condition, learning to play as a team, and becoming familiar with soccer rules/regulations. TGA Eton School (7 weeks) Mondays (Jan. 9, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; Mar. 20) Time 3:20-4:20 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 TGA Premier Youth Tennis brings tennis onto elementary school campuses across America through enrichment programs that incorporate physical activity, character development, and academic-based lessons. All TGA programs incorporate the following components: 1. Tennis instruction that is age-appropriate and effective 2. Character development lessons through the initiative Play the Fair Way with TGA 3. Physical education and fitness 4. Rules and etiquette lessons 5. Academic lessons featuring STEM concepts French (16 weeks) Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Thursdays (Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16; Mar. 2, 23; Apr. 20, 27; May 4, 11, 18, 25; Jun. 1, 8) Time: 3:45-4:45 p.m. Cost: $ (includes textbook material) Number of Students: 12 Come and join us in a bilingual, multicultural education which opens doors and minds to the world. ParisAcademyNW offers French language program for students who wish to get a head-start before high school and have fun while learning a language. The class is taught by an experienced teacher using a curriculum that is carefully designed to introduce children to new vocabulary and correct pronunciation. Lessons are constructed around five elements for elementary: total physical response activities, songs, games, crafts and culture. Students discover new cultures as they create unique treasures from a different country each week. As they craft, students learn about the traditions and celebrations that inspired it. 11 Intermediate/Advanced Coding Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 16 Does your child love coding and want to learn more? Push their programming skills to the next level in Coding with Kids Academy s Intermediate/Advanced class! Intermediate students build on their previous knowledge and are introduced to more advanced concepts like nested conditionals and functions with parameters. Advanced students dive into complex concepts, such as game physics, arrays, and artificial intelligence. The Intermediate/Advanced coding class is recommended for students who have already completed one or more sessions with Coding with Kids Academy or have attended other Scratch coding classes (must have completed a minimum of 15 hours of class). Sewing by Made Sewing Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Tuesdays (Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb. 7, 14, 28; Mar. 21) Time: 3:40-5:10 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 Have your child join the after school sewing class and he/she can jump into the exciting world of machine and hand sewing! In this class, students learn both hand and machine sewing by making oodles of fun projects that may include messenger bags, zipper totes, infinity scarves, monsters and much more. Each session, projects are switched up to start a new sewing adventure. No experience necessary and all supplies are provided. 3D Printing and Modeling presented by Blaze Education Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Thursdays (Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16; Mar. 2, 23) Time: 3:45-5:00 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 18 Does your child enjoy thinking up new ideas for products that don t exist? Does our child want to help improve the world through social innovation? Have your child join this class to draw, shape, and print the future in a 3D printing lab. In this fun and exciting class, students are given the chance to test out their designs by bringing them to life. The class is led by Blaze Education s instructors of 3D education. Students learn, discover, and create their very own 3D printed objects. Students are required to bring their own laptop. Newspaper Journalism (7 weeks) Grades 4. 5, 6, 7 and 8 Mondays (Jan. 9, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; Mar. 20) Time: 3:30-4:45 p.m. Cost: $ Number of Students: 12 Get It While It s Hot! Get the top news out to the students and staff at Eton School! Students learn the art of journalism as they develop inquiry, interview, and research skills to dig up the top stories. They then write lead paragraphs, details, headlines, and photo captions. Each journalist edits stories and designs his or her own newspaper layout and masthead to be published and distributed to the students, staff and family of Eton School to enjoy. Students are required to bring their own computer with Microsoft Word. This class is taught by Grasshopper Enrichment.
